Jim Newbigin – “The company had four bottle stores in Hastings (Head Office). Manager Colin Cardie, Napier, Alan Deacon, Wairoa, Pat ?, Poverty Bay, Ian McDermott. It was a tough time, with competition very tough, with a number of operators either stock firms or private individuals, and one or two tied to the breweries, Lion and DB. Quills HO was based in Christchurch, a very old company established in late 1890. Our major brands were Bacardi, Famous Grouse Whisky, Meyfor Brandy, Jim Beam Bourbon, Tanqueray Gin.”

Jim Newbigin – “My old friend Paul Wai-Poi, ex Hughes and Cossar, had started a small wholesale business in the liquor industry and asked me to join him as a representative in Hawke’s Bay/ Poverty Bay which I took on. At that time another friend who I had worked with previously had also asked me to join him at Federal, so I was selling for two companies on commission. It was somewhat embarrassing at times but eventually Abacus joined forces with Federal, so we became quite a force in the industry. Paul and Donal Johnson (Federal) were very astute gentlemen, fun to work with. Unfortunately Donal died far too early in life age 52. When these two companies joined they became FEDERAL LIQUOR MERCHANTS. The two companies above, moved offices and became one.

I was still on commission, calling on outlets once a month to the following in this order: Tikokino, Onga Onga, Takapau, Ormondville, Norsewood, Dannevirke (4), Woodville (2), Pahiatua (3), Pongaroa, Wimbledon, Herbertville, Porangahau, Wanstead, Waipukurau, Waipawa, Patangata, then home. Left home at 7.30am, home about 8.00pm. The following week was the Poverty Bay area: Wairoa, Gisborne, Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru, Hot Springs, Ruatoria, Tiki Tiki, Te Aroha, Hicks Bay then back to Gisborne overnight, calling at Tiniroto, Marumaru and Waikare.

In the late 80s a merger took place with Don Geo, and Federal became Federal * Geo.”

In the early nineties I thought it was time to take things easier so slowly retired from the industry that had I had started in after leaving school in 1950, working with a stock firm in Wellington, Levin & Co.”
