VISITOR FROM PRIORY TO H.B.

(By ROSEMARY MORGAN)

The Hawke’s Bay-East Coast St. John Nursing Divisions had much pleasure in meeting Miss Knight from Priory at a conference held in Napier last month.

Miss Knight explained many different things about St. John work, uniforms and duties. She did express that she would like to see divisions helping the sick and the poor. One example is where the Superintendent of the Hastings Women’s Divisions reads to the sick.

Miss Knight was very pleased with the appearance of the uniforms, and at times members were given a chance of meeting her individually. She also explained anything troubling the members or told them more about helping the sick and the poor.

Those present were very delighted to meet Miss Knight and they feel that she has helped them a lot.

Tell Us More

It has been whispered through the notorious but inevitable grapevine that Phillida Holderness of Taradale and 1955 winner of the Canterbury Centennial Shield at the Dominion Championships, is now nursing in the Hastings Memorial Hospital. If someone could verify this statement, we would be proud to send her a copy of the Jottings each month.

Hastings Hall

The next step has been taken for the Hastings divisions. Tenders have been called for, and so we are presuming that it will not be long before Hastings achieves their aim of several years.

One of the greatest lessons of life is to learn not to do what one likes, but like what one does.

HASTINGS HOLD ANNUAL PARADE

(By Robin Hickman.)

On the 9th of October, at the St. John Rooms in Southland Road, the Annual Cadet Inspection was held. A large number of cadets, boys predominating, were present.

The Nursing Cadets paraded first and were inspected by Mrs. Yeo, Mr. Kirkpatrick, Commissioner Barden and Dr. Aarrons. The Ambulance division then paraded and was inspected by Mr. Kirkpatrick and Mr. Barden. After the boys were fallen out, the parade was seated. The two Hastings Cadet Teams paraded and Dr. Aarrons [Aarons] presented silver buttons for their successes at the Wanganui competitions.

Mr. Barden introduced Mr. Kirkpatrick who then gave a short talk.

A ST. JOHN DIARY

(By Annette Foote)

Keeping a record of yours and your friends activities at St. John is great fun.

It leaves you with something to look back on in later years when you will be able to sit back and enjoy your youth all over again.

The only equipment needed is, some photo corners, paste, scissors, pen and a scrapbook.

Having obtained these, all your photographs, certificates, and of course monthly copies of the Jottings are afixed[affixed] to pages of the scrapbook with the photo corners. Then, with the aid of the pen write a suitable caption, putting down names and dates where necessary. At times where no photographs or memos are available illustrate your own written report or newspaper clipping.

Another good idea would be a Divisional Diary where the division makes a diary for reference by the whole division and for divisions in years to come.

A READER ASKS..

Dear Sir,
Do you know why we have no cricket duties in the summer season? If we can have football duties in the winter, why not cricket in the summer?

I have only just started doing duties and I have only a few hours. I would like a few more.
“Cricket”.

There is no need for a member of St. John to be on duty at a cricket match as there are no casualties in this sport. What is more, St. John only cover sports meetings etc to which they have been invited. No doubt there is something that will crop up for you to gain more hours for your duty shield.- Editor.

Sympathy for others is the true lover of all family life, for nothing oils the wheels of life as a pleasant manner and kind, cordial words.

This Month’s Short Story.

There was a thin maiden called Lena,
Who worked with a vacuum cleaner,
She got in the way
Of the suction one day,
Since then nobody has seen her.

I’d investigate this!

HASTINGS is going to have a really scrummy Xmas Social. With loads of fun. So you’ll have a bumper time dancing to a smashing band and enjoying snazzy games on the 24th. November.

It’ll probably be a masked social so you’d better be there to be in the fun.

Everybody, mum, dad, friends and all the cadets are going to be invited to keep this date free.

Fake Injuries

(By Mr H.E. Taylor)

The use of fake injuries for staging accidents is very beneficial from all points of view. The main concern is, of course, to see that the injuries are as near to the real thing as possible.

Not only should the injuries be made up properly but also the patient should so act that the people working on him (or her) should feel that they are treating a real accident; that is most important. To have trained patients for this kind of work would be by far the best. I am hoping that I can sometime form a squad of properly trained personnel for this kind of work that could travel to all Divisions for the staging of mock accidents and so be of considerable benefit to the district as a whole. I think that in this way the training of the Divisions would be greatly enhanced and would also make the competition work far more interesting.

A few points to look for in fake injuries could be:-

(1)   Wetness of clothing; representing bleeding etc.
(2)   Swelling, made up by padding, for fractures, dislocations etc.
(3)   Colour of face; shock etc.
(4)   Type of bleeding; colour of fluid used; light or dark.
(5)   Position of patient, a good suggestion of injury.
(6)   Use of cars, bicycles, ladders, etc.

Just a few suggestions that may be of help to those treating fake injuries.

Stamps for Lepers

Thank you Heather Scully, Sydney Street, Takapau, for the stamps for the lepers.

These will be passed on as soon as we get an ample supply. Now that it is getting close to Christmas, the cadets could begin to save Christmas and Birthday cards. The more you send the more we’ll take.

THERE IS A NEVER ENDING NEED FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION – SEND IT TO THE EDITOR NOW!

[NEXT MONTH WE ARE HAVING A SPECIAL CHRISTMAS ISSUE – IF YOU HAVE A GOOD “CHRISTMASY” ARTICLE, WE WILL ACCEPT IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE]

Cut this out and paste it on to your envelope when you send your contribution,
