Cadet Competitions Being Staged in Hawkes Bay this Month

When Hastings Cadets agreed to enter the Wanganui Competitions last year, it was on condition that they staged competitions in return, thus, on April the 27th teams from all of this District and from Wanganui will probably be competing at the Hastings Wes [West] Nursing Section the three trophies in the Ambulance Section, a F.A. Team Test, and two other individual competitions. In the Nursing Section the thee [three] trophies are for F.A. Team Test, Home Nursing Team Test and the third for the Champion Leader.

Billets are being arranged for the distant teams who will be staying in Hastings on Saturday night. A presentation Social Evening on the agenda for the evening will be held at the St. Andrew’s Hall in Market Street. Divisions not entering the competitions will possibly be invited to this event.

Your debt to your Parents

Has it occurred to you the amount of work, thought and love your parents give you day by day? Who suffers most when you are sick?
Who is it that worries when you are worried and is never happier when you are happy?
Do you know who works from early morning, often till late at night for your benefit?
There is only one answer, cadets, it is Mum and Dad.
NOW, what about returning that love?
HOW? Well, do you leave school bags, school clothes, shoes and all sorts of things lying around everywhere? Do you put toys away when you have finished with them?
Will you go a message cheerfully when asked?
SO, what about a special effort to show Mum and Dad we love them too!

TO THE EDITOR AND HELPERS

Sir,
May I extend to you and your helpers, my congratulations on completing one year of Cadet Jottings. (May is our Anniversary). I would also like to thank you for this grand service to the H.B.-E.C. Cadets, you have done and are still doing a grand job.

I look forward to receiving my Jottings and I have been thinking this evening that all of us, Association Members, District Staff, Brigade Members, and all who receive the Jottings look for it too, but, how many of us help it along by sending you something to print. I’m a bad offender myself, but will endeavour to contribute in future.

May your next years Jottings be as good as you have made last years.
D.R. BURFIELD,
Cadet Supt.

SMILE and the world will smile with you. Kick and you kick alone.

GLAD TIDINGS

Not one cadet division in the H.B.-E.C. District will now be without copies of C.J. At last, the matter has been cleared up, a revised copy of addresses was collected from the District Secretary so that now, all magazines will be going to right places.

The opportunity is also taken to explain to our readers the reason of the publication of their magazine.

C.J. is a news link between the H.B.-E.C. Cadet Division, issued free of charge in exchange for news items and articles of interest from each division. Superintendents are asked to send in a monthly report on divisional activities and all other readers have as wide a scope as can possibly be imagined from which they may choose their articles. Please! No more jokes as we have ample sufficiency.

DO YOU KNOW

A Staff Officer and a Brigade Surgeon is entitled to a salute whether he is in uniform or not.

Newspaper is excellent for cleaning windows.

A strip of leather in the form of a loop round your bike hubs will keep them clean and new looking.  WHEN your shoes are wet do not put them near heat to dry but hang them up over a line or somewhere near a draught. Heat destroys leather.

WATCH the next issue, space has been reserved for the Waipawa boys and Wairoa girls divisions.

Hastings Hall is under way

The building will be of modern design, built of reinforced concrete, with brick panels. It will be a single-storey structure, with a high hip roof supported by steel trusses.

The main hall will have an area of 2975 square feet. There is provision for a 24ft. stage, lecture and supper rooms, kitchen, store-room and all the usual facilities.

“Three years ago we purchased the site, with a two-storey house formerly owned by the late Mr G.C. Haldane,” said Mr Elliott. “Since we bought it we have been using the property as our headquarters for all activities.”

“We also set about planning for the new hall for the use of our members and the various uniformed units, and for social functions.”

Mr Elliott said the site was an admirable one. The ambulances could be housed there and the existing buildings provided living accommodation for St. John Ambulance drivers and for sub-centre officers.

With the addition of the new hall there would be the necessary room for all members of the various units and divisions to train and practise. The St. John Ambulance would thus be able to give first-aid to all in need in Hastings, Havelock North and the surrounding districts.

Recently the Hastings sub-centre took over the ambulance service for the Hastings area completely from the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board, and this in itself was a big step forward in the progress of the work of the Order of St. John, said Mr Elliott. The service was operating very efficiently.

There were many other duties carried out by the St. John Ambulance, such as the provision of blood transfusion service for the district, and attendance at all sports meetings and public functions.
