THE CADET JOTTINGS

OCTOBER 1958   Volume 3., No. 1

NEW ERA IN HISTORY OF THE ORDER IN THIS DISTRICT.

Renewed efforts have once again brought the Cadet Jottings into being. Through the courtesy of the Hawkes Bay Herald Tribune, publication has re-commenced in monthly issues, each giving a complete coverage of news and events in the Hawkes Bay East Coast District.

As is usual with a journal of this type, readers are always welcome to forward their reports, photographs and other such literary efforts.

Social committees and others have and may make use of our columns for advertising purposes. This service which was originally a free one is now offered at the price of 1d. a word, minimum charge is sixpence and payments may be made by way of twopenny postage stamps.

Thus with the good prospects of an increasing circulation and a very successful year ahead of us, there is no doubt that the Cadet Jottings will develop into the finest cadet magazine ever published.

FOOTNOTE: District Commissioner Mr. H. Barden who was very enthusiastic about news of the re-issue of Cadet Jottings expressed his pleasure at the revival of one of his “Pets”. District Superintendent Mr. I. Snadden felt sure that our magazine would “flourish.” And to all the many other persons who sent their good wishes; Thanks a lot.

AT WORK: Havelock North Cadets practising first aid on patient P. Harrison. Supervising them is District Staff Officer Mr S C Andrews at one of their weekly meetings.

BARDEN AND TAYLOR CUPS CONTESTED AT GISBORNE

At Gisborne on the last week of August the Waipukurau division consisting of Cadets I Harrison, T Stanich, R Davey, Sergeant B Marshall and Corporal S Barclay, trained by Cadet Superintendent G Mulvanah won the Barden Cup. Second place getters were Hastings and Wainui Cadets, Gisborne were third.

Leader of the Hastings team Sergeant Mark Morgan won the Taylor Cup by a margin of two points from Waipukurau’s B Marshall.

Ambulance Cadets in Havelock North are competing for a trophy presented to them this year. Named the “Cadet Efficiency Cup” it bears the Maltese Cross as its motif marks being awarded for neatness, behaviour, special services, enrolment of new members and attendances.

SIX COME TO DO DUTY IN HAWKES BAY

During the Blossom Festival Parade in Hastings, reinforcements to the number of Ambulancemen on duty were brought from Hutt Valley.

OH, WHAT A JOY TO BELONG TO ST. JOHN

Oh, What a joy to belong to St. John;
Always inspections or something on.
Comps. and socials and such things too;
It’s fun to join in the things we do.

There are duties of course in various places;
Basketball, Football, Hockey and Races.
So join up now, everyone; come along do;
And you can share in the fun with us too.

It’s nice to know what to do when you’re out,
When somebody’s hurt; what a scream and a shout.
We’ll show you to bandage a leg or an arm,
So that the limb won’t come to any more harm.

So, come on now, everyone join in the throng;
Do your bit well, and help others along.
And do come please; we’ve room for lots more,
And we’re sure you’ll find good times in store.

REPRESENTATIVE TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD AT INVERCARGILL

Central figure in a party representing Hawkes Bay East Coast at the Dominion championships was cadet Stuart Barclay of Waipukurau. He was entered for the Bledisloe Cup which was judged on the candidate’s personal smartness, his ability as an instructor and his knowledge of first aid, home nursing, Holger Neilson resuscitation, squad drill and stretcher and ambulance loading.

Cadet Barclay who is aged 15 joined the St. John in 1951 and since then has competed in five different competitions. In the two competitions where he competed as an individual this year he gained a first placing (Baxter Leadership Cup at Hastings) and a third placing (Leadership Cup at Wanganui). On the two occasions he was a member of a team that gained second placing and his team recently won the Barden Cup.

Travelling with cadet Barclay were Cadet Superintendent G. Mulvanah and Superintendent J.A. Fitzmaurice who has been responsible for his training.

A total of 63 competitors entered the various competitions and 13 doctors and 10 nurses as well as members of the armed forces and brigade personnel were judging.

A telegram to District Commissioner Mr. H. Barden stated that Cadet Barclay gained fifth placing and that he gave a creditable performance.

LOCAL ELIMINATION RESULTS

The Cadet Elimination Competitions held in Hastings and Havelock North last month resulted in a double win for Hastings. The Nursing division won their contest from about five teams at Hastings and the Cadet Ambulance team from that fair City proved to be the victors over two other teams at Havelock.

MANY INJURIES MAKE HEAVY DEMANDS ON SUPPLIES

Although the total number of casualties treated during the winter season is unknown it is believed that there was a considerable strain on the stores departments.

ST. JOHN JUNIOR GROUP WELL SUPPORTED

Hastings Nursing Cadet Division has been running a St. John Junior Group. This has proved to be popular as is shown by the attendance of twentyfour members.

AM I CONFIDENT I KNOW THE CHAPTER ON THE SUBJECT OF INSENSIBILITY?
