CANCER SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND
(HAWKE’S BAY CENTRE) INC.

ANNUAL REPORT
For the Year ended 31st March, 1975.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my privilege to present to you a report on the activities of the Centre for the year which ended on the 31st March, 1975. Attached to the report is a copy of the income and expenditure account and the balance sheet as at the 31st March last.

As in previous years we have been greatly encouraged with the measure of support which has been given to the Hawke’s Bay Centre of the Cancer Society by its members and well wishers who have supported us so generously with donations and bequests. We received a total income of $36,832.32 compared with $23,983.06 in the previous year. Our expenditure totalled $12,584.11 compared with $16,453.11 in the previous year. The nett result is that we have transferred to our accumulated funds on the year’s operations $24,248.21 which increases our total assets to the value of $97,867.78.

Last year our principal outgoing was towards the improvements being effected at Ozanam House in Palmerston North. This year we have made substantial grants for research projects and have paid an appreciably higher levy to the Central Districts Division to assist with the expansion of the work being carried out through the whole territory.

The buoyant position of our finances is we feel a tangible expression of the very warm and generous interest being taken in the activities of the society by a great number of people.

As we continue to emphasise, research is at the centre of work being carried out by the Cancer Society of New Zealand. We have been pleased to provide financial support for the National programme of Research which is being conducted in conjunction with the University of Otago. Another important research programme which is proceeding and which we have supported is that on malignant lymphomas in sheep which has been set up at Massey University. This is a very promising project from which important results are anticipated.

Your centre also contributed the sum of $3,000.00 to research projects in Auckland as reported a year ago. We are proposing to continue this support for a further year. These projects are firstly a study of women at risk for breast cancer using Xerography. In the course of the survey made up to June this year 1250 women had been examined with no clinical evidence of cancer of the breast. The machine has detected 56 women with results which arouse suspicion of cancer. Some of these have been sent for biopsy, and some require further Xerogram examination. A further area of research in Auckland which we are supporting is that on colon cancer which was started last year under Dr. Teague. A report on this area of research is expected shortly.

The Society has provided assistance to local surgeons in an overall study of colon and rectal cancer. The result of this study has now been analysed and is being co-ordinated with similar work being carried out in Brisbane and in Auckland.

A continuing study is taking place in Hawke’s Bay in an endeavour to classify and follow up all cases of melanoma in this area and the Centre is pleased to be able to be identified in a practical way with this study.

The Division’s Education Officer, Mr Hendra, continues to be active in the educational activities of the Cancer Society. His diligent and conscientious work in this area is always appreciated by his audiences. His lectures and film showings to schools and other organisations are in great demand and we feel sure it must be having a very significant impact.

Once again on behalf of the Centre I should like to express our gratitude to Mr B. N. Fippard A.C.A. for his honorary work in auditing the Centre’s accounts.

As in previous years we continue to be greatly indebted to our Secretary-Treasurer, Mr H. E. Wright and his assistant Mrs A. E. Smith, who discharge these offices with such efficiency.

SIR EDWIN BATE,
President.
