COUNTY CLUB Inc.
Hastings – Established 1914
We started in 1914 upstairs on Market Street North above a furniture shop. The services that the Club provided were a billiards room and a reading room. No mention of any liquor being available.
Nothing is then known about us until 1937 onward and only then from meeting minutes. The general consensus is that we moved to our present site “during the ’30s”.
We have copies of plans which the Hastings Borough Council had submitted to them to grant a Building Consent.
On 15th October 1931 Council issued a Permit for us to build our Clubrooms on the present site. Presumably the building was started soon after.
The Architect and structural designer was J.T. Watson of Wellington. The builder was Edwards Construction Company. We expect they completed the buildings and the Club moved in sometime in 1932.
Interestingly George Ebbett was the first President and he became President again in 1932 – 18 years later. This always seemed strange but perhaps it was an “honour” by the Club to bestow Presidency to him again on the first year in the new premises.
