THE CHAPEL

OF

SAINT JAMES

HEREWORTH SCHOOL

O Lord Jesus Christ, who hast the key of life, who openest and no man shuttest, give Thy power, we pray Thee, to us Thy servants, and grant that this house, now opened for Thy service, may always be filled with Thy presence, and may ever remain a refuge and inspiration for Thy faithful people: who with the Father and the Holy Spirit livest and reignest God for ever and ever. Amen

THIS CHAPEL WAS BUILT
IN MEMORY OF
J. N. WILLIAMS
AN OLD BOY OF THIS SCHOOL
KILLED ON ACTIVE SERVICE
WITH THE R.N.Z.A.F.
DECEMBER 1942

Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of Glory shall come in.

“Let Thine eye of love, O Lord, be continually upon this house and home which we would encompass and consecrate to Thee and grant likewise unto Thy people of this Diocese and this School that, encompassed by Thy Spirit and consecrated to Thy service, they may be a living temple blameless and undefiled unto the day of Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Prayer of Dedication

The Sentence of Consecration is Read

O God who hast filled the earth with the glory of Thy presence and hast inspired Thy servants to design and build so fair an house now consecrated as a dwelling place for Thyself; grant that Thy children who come within its walls may ever find Thee with them in the strength and beauty, love and joy, of Thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grant, O Lord, that all who in this place shall minister to Thee may be mindful of the dignity of the office to which they are called and that their prayers and praises may lead Thy people to the throne of grace, and be joined to the perpetual intercession of our Great High Priest, even Christ our Lord.

Grant, O Lord, that all who in this place shall read the Scriptures which Thou hast given us, may be filled with the faith of Thy gospel and with thankfulness to Thee, who dost reveal Thyself to men by the Word of Life, and may so read that all shall understand; and grant that all who hear shall receive that word into honest and good hearts, and may bring forth fruit with patience, through Him who is the Word of Life, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grant, O Lord, that all who in this place shall preach Thy word may be so filled with Thy Holy Spirit that their wisdom and fervent zeal may turn back the hearts of sinners and establish the faith of all Thy children, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, the Sanctifier of all things, whose loving-kindness never faileth; who rulest both in heaven and earth, keeping mercy for Thy people who walk before the presence of Thy glory, graciously vouchsafe, we beseech Thee, to hallow this building set apart for Thy holy mysteries; mercifully illumine and brighten it with Thine own glory and pour down Thy blessing upon it; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let the Foundation Stone be laid to the Glory of Him Who is the Everlasting Foundation of the Church of God.

IN THE FAITH OF JESUS CHRIST WE MARK THIS STONE IN THE NAME OF GOD, THE FATHER, THE SON AND THE HOLY GHOST. AMEN.
