Born Hastings, 6 July 1919, son of Alfred Henry Clark and Daisy Hannah (née Twine); married (1) Kathleen Gertrude Roberts, daughter of Mr and Mrs E Roberts, 1941 (d 1978); (2) Erica Lorraine Hinenamu Grace, daughter of Mr and Mrs F Grace, 1983; three daughters.
Education: Hastings West Primary; Hastings High School; Auckland Teachers College 1937-1939 (3rd year specialist in physical education); Auckland University, BA 1954, MA 1958; Fulbright Award to teach in New York City 1957-1958; Woolf Fisher Travel Scholar 1972. Wellington West Coast Regiment, 1941 (2nd Lieutenant). Assistant Master, Palmerston North Boys’ High School, 1940; Senior Secondary Assistant, Raurimu District High School, 1942-1950; Head of Maths, Dargaville High School, 1951-1960; Principal, Rutherford High School, Auckland, 1960-1984 (retired); led initiation numerous changes at Rutherford High School, some adopted by many other NZ schools, including advanced placement to accelerate bright pupils, Deans system, adults as full-time secondary students, marae and work skills program for Maori pupils who had left school, wide community use of school facilities, Form 7 alternative program for pupils not going on to university, job placement for pupils 15 years and over, Maori culture group, social education for Form 4 pupils, use of computers; President, Auckland Secondary Schools Principals Association, 1976-1978; President, NZ Secondary Principals Association, 1978-1980; Member, Auckland Teachers Colleges Council, 1970-1984; Chairman, Auckland Secondary Teachers College Cl, 1970-1984.
