COOPER, Dame Whina
Maori Leader.
Born Te Karaka 9 December 1895. Married 1916 Richard Gilbert (d); two children – Maudie, Gerry; remarried 1935 William Cooper; four children – Joseph, Hinerangi, Merekaraka, Nopera.
Educated St Joseph’s College, Greenmeadows.
Led 1975 land march.
Formerly postmistress and shopkeeper.
Past president Panguru Federated Farmers, first Dominion President Maori Women’s Welfare League 1951-57. Awarded DBE 1980; ONZ 1991; Justice of the Peace 1952-.
Address Panguru, Hokianga, Northland.
