Educated Napier Boys’ High School; Victoria University College, Wellington – MA (1st class honours) (NZ) 1942; Wellington Teachers’ Training College.
Ambassador to USA 1967-72, Secretary of Foreign Affairs 1973-76; Permanent Representative of NZ to UN 1962-67, deputy secretary External Affairs, counsellor NZ High Commission London, first secretary NZ Embassy Washington, NZ representative UN Trusteeship Council (president 1964-65), NZ representative UN Security Council 1966.
Awarded CMG 1980.
Board member NZ-US Educational Foundation 1980-88, council member Victoria University of Wellington 1981-87, chairman Defence Committee of Enquiry 1985-86.
Leisure activities include the arts, gardening, and wine.
Address 26 Burnell Avenue, Wellington.
