Cornwall Park Tea Kiosk

Memories of Cornwall Park Tea Kiosk

Val’s father owned the Cornwall Park Tea Kiosk and Val managed it for him in the early 1950s. The previous owner was George Woolley.
Val’s sister, Betty Green, had her wedding reception there in 1953.
Their father did all the catering from the kitchen at the Kiosk, and also catered for many balls and dances.  Val recalls two ovens.
Val was married to Ray Cash in 1955, though the reception was not held at the Kiosk.
Tourist buses from Napier arrived for afternoon teas.  Sometimes if there was a large crowd, there was a rush and dishes had to be washed by hand and more food put out.
Cricketers’ afternoon teas had a grand price of 9d (nine pence).
All cooking was undertaken at the tearooms, no food bought in.
Refreshments for sale to people in the park, eg ice creams, milkshakes, sweets etc.
Sadly, fire closed the Kiosk about 1957.
