Cattle Scheme

A new fundraising initiative in Hawke’s Bay for Cranford Hospice

Cattle schemes are an established form of fundraising in rural communities. Cranford Hospice has recently worked with Arohanui Hospice in Palmerston North, who run an existing cattle scheme which, after 17 years, generates over $175,000 a year.

Cranford wants to establish its own Cranford Cattle Scheme in partnership with the Hawke’s Bay community we serve.

Peter Catley, an Omakere farmer, has had personal experience with the work Cranford Hospice does when his wife Carole was a patient. He and Maitland Manning, a PSEC Board member and CHBDC Councillor, have committed to facilitate and promote the scheme to help ” kick start” it here in Hawke’s Bay.

Cranford needs farmers to be involved. Typically you will be asked to run one or more head of cattle per year on our behalf. Having said that, we will be as flexible as the contributing farmers need us to be. Meat companies are being approached and will be asked to be involved in the supply, financing, transport and killing of the stock.

How will it work?

Cattle provided by participating meat companies, on behalf of Cranford, will be sent to farms and lifestyle blocks within our region for fattening or sell store. When the cattle are ready for slaughter, arrangements will be made, and Cranford will maintain a register of all related transactions to administer the process.

We need farmers willing to be involved!

We are inviting Cranford supporters and friends to become involved. We’d be grateful if they would encourage others to participate as well.

We suggest that you contact your Accountant for any possible Tax Advantages.

Each farm will be given a Cranford Cattle Scheme gate sign showing their involvement.

Cranford Hospice needs to raise $2 million each financial year, over and above Government funding, to provide specialised care to people with a terminal illness and support their families, free of charge. Without the generosity and support of the rural community, this ongoing fundraising activity will not be possible.
