Intermedia Artist and Composer.
Born Napier 14 May […]. Married 1977 Camilla During; four children – Aureole, Sophia, Anna, Zoe.
Educated Colenso High School, Napier; Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland University 1965-1967, 1970-71 – Dip FA (Hons) 1971.
Senior lecturer, time-based arts, Elam School of Fine Arts.
Founded NZ Scratch Orchestra 1970, From Scratch 1974; filmmaker 1972-76 and co-founder Alternative Cinema.
Co-author The From Scratch Rhythm Work Book (Heinemann Education, 1990.
From Scratch recordings include Rhythm Works (1979), Drum/Sing Pacific 3.2.1 Zero (Flying Nun, 1985), Songs for Heroes (Rattle, 1991), the film Drum/Sing (director, Gregor Nicholas) – first prize film-as-art category, 28th American Film Festival, New York 1986, Annual Merit Award, Composers’ Association of NZ 1985, Fulbright Cultural Award 1991.
Numerous performances and exhibitions from 1970 throughout NZ and Australia, New York, Tokyo, Edinburgh.
Leisure activities include sitting offshore in a rowboat drifting.
