Born Christchurch, 6 November 1948, son of John Brant Dawson and Florence Emily (née Carlisle); married Penelope Rae Stalker, daughter of Zena and Robert Stalker, 1970; one son.
Education: Petone, Masterton Primary Schools; Masterton, Hastings Intermediates; Hastings Boys High School, Canterbury University Ilam School of Art, Diploma of Fine Arts 1970; Christchurch Teachers College, Teachers Certificate 1972; Victorian College of the Arts, Grad Diploma (Sculpture) 1973.
Tutor in Three-Dimensional Design and Drawing, Visual Communications Course, Christchurch Polytechnic, 1976-1983; Full-time Sculptor, 1983 -; Visual Arts Panel QEII Arts Cl, 1988-1990; more than 20 Exhibitions in NZ, Australia, US including: 11th International Sculpture Conference, US 1980, Australian Biennale 1988, Magicians of the World, Paris 1989, ‘Get the Picture’, National Art Gallery, Wellington; Installations and Public Commissions include: ‘Echo’, Christchurch Arts Centre 1981, ‘The Rock’, Bank of New Zealand Centre, Wellington 1984, ‘5 Large Works’, New York University, Grad Mall 1985, ‘Ripples’, Hamilton Te Whare Taonga O Waikato 1987, ‘Globe’, Centre George Pompidou, Paris 1989, ‘Framework’, National Art Gallery 1989, ‘Get the Picture’, Wellington Railway Station 1990, ‘Featherlight’, Aotea Centre, Auckland 1990.  QEII Arts Council Awards 1972, 1980, 1985; Guthrie Travel Award, 1978.
