Born Christchurch, 6 November 1948, son of John Brant Dawson and Florence Emily (née Carlisle); married Penelope Rae Stalker, daughter of Zena and Robert Stalker, 1970; one son.
Education: Petone, Masterton Primary Schools; Masterton, Hastings Intermediates; Hastings Boys High School, Canterbury University Ilam School of Art, Diploma of Fine Arts 1970; Christchurch Teachers College, Teachers Certificate 1972; Victorian College of the Arts, Grad Diploma (Sculpture) 1973.
