Born Wairoa, 20 November 1944, son of Jack William de Gruchy and Sheila Margaret (née Graham); married Deborah Joan Kelt, daughter of Ian and Joan Kelt, 1979; three sons.
Education: Hereworth Prep School, Wanganui; Wanganui Collegiate.
Farmed family property at Mangatahi near Hastings 1963; took over ‘Netherby’ 1972; purchased first breeding mare 1975; bred champion weight for age mare Horlicks by Three Legs out of the unraced Malt, 1983; Horlicks won 15 races from 32 starts to December 1989 including 1989 Japan Cup and Approximately $3 million in stakes; President, HB-Poverty Bay Branch, NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Association.
Recreations: horse racing, tennis golf.
