War Memorial Centre, Napier

MAYORS MESSAGE

On behalf of the City, I am pleased to welcome the celebrity speakers and audience to the 1996 Denton Donovan Festival Debate.

Denton Donovan and the subsidiary sponsors are to be congratulated on their support and their generosity, from which the Hawke’s Bay Child Cancer Foundation will benefit.

Importantly also, thanks to the Hawke’s Bay Speaking Union for their organisational support. The 1996 Denton Donovan Festival Debate will be yet again a memorable occasion.

Alan Dick
MAYOR OF NAPIER

HAWKE’S BAY CHILD CANCER FOUNDATION

The Hawke’s Bay Child Cancer Foundation was established mainly to provide moments of joy to Hawke’s Bay children undergoing cancer treatment and the families of those children.

To date, several Hawke’s Bay families have enjoyed quality holiday experiences in Australia.

The Foundation has established a network of supporters including Best United Travel, Air New Zealand and several Australian hotels, to help cater for these children and their families.

FOR THE FEMALES . . .

GEORGINA BEYER
Mayor of Carterton

Chose to be a woman. How lucky can you be.
Born 1957 and since pioneered massive attitude changes amongst many New Zealanders. Made Carterton the most progressive small town in the western world.
Former actress – specialising in roles of a seamy nature. Perfect training for local body politics.
Moved to Carterton 1990 and the place has never been the same since. Drama tutor (again, prerequisite for local body politics) and elected to District Council in by-election 1993.
Elected Mayor of Carterton in 1995 with absolute majority over three other candidates. World’s first trans-sexual mayor.

JANE CLIFTON
Political Commentator

The only political commentator in New Zealand with a sense of fun. The Madonna of the parliamentary Press Gallery.
Born in Auckland 1961 and “attended sundry schools”. Both parents emigrated to Australia whilst at school. Substantial media experience including ‘NZ Times’, ‘Dominion’, TV3 and now ‘Sunday Times’.
Regular on ‘Ralston Group’ trying to pacify Ralston, Robyn Langwell, Alan Duff, etc. Calm light of reason – result of numerous interviews with sobbing backbenchers.
List hobbies as low-impact Morris dancing; trying to interest philistines; backbenchers and gloating.

ROSIE FENWICKE
General Practitioner

A wee jaunt tiger hunting in Nepal and India convinced Rosie she had made the right decision in going for med school rather than vet school.
Occasional imbiber and tap dancer, often at the same time. Rosie is a Medical Officer to the Lifespan team at the Hawke’s Bay CHE, GP in Flaxmere and mother of three.

FOR THE MALES . . .

JIM HOPKINS
Media Personality

Born Waimate, South Canterbury. Educated at Addington Primary, Invercargill Borstal and numerous other nocturnal enterprises of a tactile nature.
Claims to be aged just 27 years. Numerous abandoned nights with Elle McPherson appear to have taken their toll. Previous employment includes radio, television and countless appearances as country’s top debater.
Ambitions listed as longing for Hawke’s Bay citizens to adopt him and to be the first mountaineer to climb Rachel Hunter. If not, will settle for world peace.

ROGER MORONEY
Journalist

Born Napier 1954 and never left. Convinced world ends at Dannevirke (well, civilisation does!!).
In former occupation was forklift driver so naturally began writing for ‘Daily Telegraph’ in 1988. Rabid motorbike fan and car writer.
Now favourite TV columnist with ‘Daily Telegraph’ and feature writer. Nominated for article on stomach lining and contents in wake of recent ‘Endeavour’ adventure.
Married with three children. Ambition to be never satisfied.

BRENDAN WEBB
Journalist

Brendan is a regular performer at Hawke’s Bay debates, and was named ‘Best Speaker’ at the 1994 Denton Donovan Festival Debate.
News Editor at the Herald Tribune in his spare time away from the debating limelight, Brendan’s rapier wit and expansive intellect make him a crowd favourite.
Desperately longing for platform shoes to be the fashion again.

HAWKE’S BAY SPEAKING UNION INC

The Hawke’s Bay Speaking Union was formed to promote public speaking and debating in the region and has been active since 1988.

One of the Speaking Union’s aims is to make Hawke’s Bay the debating ‘capital’ of New Zealand – and the province is fast earning a reputation as such.

The BNZ Festival Debate, of which the HBSU owns the rights, is now well established as the premier debating event in New Zealand. The debate donates its net proceeds to Hawke’s Bay charities through the ‘Bank of New Zealand Festival Trust’.

In 1994, the Speaking Union launched a festival debate in Napier, named the Denton Donovan Festival Debate, with Denton Donovan’s generous sponsorship. The last two debates have been outstanding successes and this event has established itself as a major highlight on Napier’s entertainment calendar.

The Hawke’s Bay Speaking Union would like to thank the speakers for bringing their talent to the stage of the newly refurbished War Memorial Centre, and special thanks to Denton Donovan, and the time and commitment given by Partner, Ernie Williams.
