A NEW ZEALAND FAMILY GENESIS

A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF JOHN AND SARAH ANN SHEPHERD.

John Shepherd described as a Printer and Journalist was born on July 7th 1833 at Seagrave, Leicestershire, England.

Sarah Ann Longbottom known to have been educated at a private school (not named) and employed at her father’s drapery was born on Sept. 20th 1837 at Louth, Lincolnshire, England.

John Shepherd married Sarah Ann Longbottom on July 10th, 1858 and so begins our story in vital statistics.-

The names and dates are interesting enough, especially for those concerned and may provide material for a study of human behaviour or evolution, but a word or two about the principals may not be amiss.

It may be surprising for instance to find that John Shepherd was not the robust, lusty founder of this large family that we might imagine. In fact he was finely featured, slim, average height, of studious disposition and ever careful of his health.

A short time after marriage his deteriorating chest condition was the reason for his doctor suggesting that he emigrate from industrial England and perhaps that was the main deciding factor in the production of this prolific New Zealand family.

Early in the year 1862 John and Sarah Ann became interested in a venture to emigrate to New Zealand with a group of Non-conformists, who later became known as the Albertlanders. Advance agents took up blocks of land offered by the Government along the fringe of the Kaipara Harbour – plans were drawn up and ballots arranged for various lots to fully paid shareholders in the scheme. – On May 29th 1862 the first of the settlers including the Shepherds were farewelled from London Docks by a crowd of 15,000.

The passage to Auckland in a small sailing ship the ‘Hanover’, their crude quarters and adventurous voyage made a story that lingered with them for the rest of their lives. The transport of their goods and chattels overland and by river to their allotment at Port Albert and their disillusionment in finding even the town lots covered in trees and fern and many miles from any road, must have made an impact even greater.

The Shepherds were not alone in this predicament and soon found others even worse off who needed help and comfort; so their years of rugged selfhelp and community service began.

At first survival was predominant in their thoughts and actions and in this connection there are stories of potatoes already planted being dug out and rationed. John Shepherd is said to have carried a 50lb. bag of flour from Mangawai on one occasion when supplies were depleted.

He was a stalwart of the first Methodist Church in Port Albert and one of the early local preachers. Methodism claimed the faith and endeavours of both John and Sarah Ann and passed on to a large proportion of their descendants.

Later a Store and Boarding-house was built near the Port Albert Landing by the Co-operative Society and John became Manager until 1890 when he purchased the business, running it for many years, after which he sold out and retired to Auckland where he passed the remainder of his days.

When they left the district their friends made them a presentation of an Illuminated Address, which is now to be seen at the Port Albert Memorial Museum.

Sarah Ann Shepherd began married life as a small trim bride of 21 years and proceeded to love, honour and obey her husband. Although she remained trim and her integrity was never questioned, there is reason to believe that she later became the dominant partner. It was “Mrs. Shepherd’ who really managed the Store at Port Albert and Mrs. Shepherd whom the Maoris of that district loved and honoured.

In Widowhood and retirement she exerted an influence over her own children and liked to think that she could direct her growing

family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the ways they should tread.

Of the next generation born of pioneering parents and reared in good pioneering fashion everyone has proved to have a “stout heart” and to that description we should perhaps add an “iron will”.

All must have been strong constitutionally as a sum of their ages could establish a record for any one family.

Some remained to carry on in the tradition of their parents, – others made their mark in new places. Two of the three still living have travelled widely.

And so the stock has spread into many branches of this large New Zealand family and as it prospers may it continue to produce some of its strength of character and grace and goodness of those deservedly proud people John and Sarah Ann Shepherd.
