MON 1 JULY 1901
Mustered crutched sheep in front paddock & put them in old yards.  Picked out 5 fat ewes & put them in reserve & 1 for dogs meat.  Got in all ewes from back,  found one cast near McGreevey’s & got her in, left 3 weak hoggt in ridges.  John started school this morning.  Got 4 letters today, one of them an invitation to Emma Engelbretson’s wedding on the 3rd inst.
TU 2   Married 17 years today.  Showers.  El & Co drove to Mr Fribergs, the 2 girls at home.  El sent letter to Alice today with cheque for £5.0.0. to help defray funeral expenses.  John got a pig ringer at Browns for 1/-   Dug underneath fruit trees at stockyard.  Gave some hay to cows & two horses tonight.  Get very little milk now.
WED 3   Very fine day.  Went to the wedding of Emma Englebretsen & August Walter Gower.  On Monday put on back sec 369 dry sheep left on ridges 3 weak hoggt in reserve 5 fats & 1 poor one for dogs = 378 in reserve before 32 total dry sheep on back & reserve = 410

TH 4 JULY 1901
Worked at cowshed, inside.  John bought castors for sofa at I Browns, & bag sugar at Becketts.  Give hay now to 2 horses & 4 cows.  Letters from Mrs McNutt & Charlie & bill from McFarlane.
FR 5   Sent cheque to Mutual Life Assn £1.17.10  also cheque for Violin to J V Lawrence £2. 5.6 also rabbit rates to E Gilbertson -/5/6.  Sent Babba’s photo to Miss Webb & 1 to Alice.  Went with El & John to see Montgomery’s pictures.  Some snow tonight.  Hilda Gribble stays here
SAT 6   Split some henau posts on flat & sledged in firewood.  John got ½ bushel of fowlwheat at Becketts 1/11   Snow.  Ground white   Gave hay this afternoon to calf, mare & 6 cows.
SUN 7   All at home.  With John put 3 dry cows out on back, & kept 3 in, milk at night   Hilda went home at night.  Weather unsettled.
MON 8   Cut some limbs off trees in slope plantation.  Grubbed out broadleaf poplar suckers.  Rough day.  Worked inside cowshed.  Wind.

TU 9 JULY 1901
Put in 3 flax roots in pigs paddock.  Got in and crutched 54 ewes 1 wether.  Fine forenoon, showers & very rough afternoon.  Mr Martin called with the fruit trees ordered.
WED 10   Paid P G Grant on acct. £1.10 mare shod & John got filly shod at Orm.  Mr Alfred Engelbetsen called looking for 22 gees, they were near Thodsen’s.  N Thodsen borrowed crowbar.  Killed poor hogt for dogs.  Stuck the 6 fruit trees in the ground.
TH 11   Worked in cowshed.  A Photographer “took” WHR the house on his own acct.  Mr Randerson here tonight.  He has leased Wingers place.  Steady rain.
FR 12   Did some work in cowshed, made partition   RANGE   Mr Randerson went to Hastings. Rain
SAT 13   Rain all day long.  Finished inside shed   Put the horses in reserve.  Cows hang about.
SUN 14   All at home.  Rain now & nearly all day.
MON 15   Sawed and split & sledged in firewood. Skinned Hogg died in reserve   2 Miss Fribergs & Mrs Wilson called.  Very fine day.  Invitation to A Collins & Miss Gower’s Wedding.

TU 16 JULY 1901
Heavy frost this morning, crutching ewes   El & co at Mrs Cumming’s.  Top & babba Fribergs
WED 17   Crutching.  The ewes very heavy and springing.  El at Mrs Gribbles.  Frost this morning.  Very fine day.  John & babba got strong boots at Hansens & slippers.
TH 18   Crutched 20 which were in shed.  Wet day.
FR 19   Wet day.  Did no work.  Frank McNut came by coach.
SAT 20   Caught & killed 2 young roosters.  Got the geese into buggy shed & cut their wings & John took a gander to Gowers.  El & John drove to O’Hara’s for a sack of potatoes but got none.  Walked over back with Frank & saw Cattle.  Buttercup springing.
SUN 21   All at home.  John drove Frank to Jessops
MON 22   Drove Frank to Factory & along road towards Ngamoko.  Got cheque £1.0.5 from Factory.  Frank sent Telegram to Sam McNutt.  Mr & Mrs Ennis came in the afternoon & went back to Jessops.  Rev Wills called.  Very fine day.

TU 23 JULY 1900
Walked through ewes & saw cattle.  Soft sort of weather.  Drove Frank to Station & he nearly missed the train.  Letters from Alice, D Webb
WED 24   Went to Arthur Collins & Miss Gowers Wedding.  Showery & rainy day.  Drove to Wes Church.  Went up at 6 o’clock in the evening & stayed until nearly nine & brought up John & babba.
TH 25   Sledged in 2 or 3 loads of firewood.  Got in & crutched 24 ewes after dinner & put 20 in the shed.  Letter & fiddlestring from B Wilson, Papakura.  A very dry day.
FR 26   Finished crutching the ewes 256 & 11 mixed.  Got in Buttercup & her calf from back.  She had a heifer calf today.  Paid Adela 5/6   She is paid up to the 1st August.  Sent cheque to I Sandtmann  13.15.  Top drove to Fribergs with her violin.
SAT 27   Sledged in firewood.  Killed a third rooster.  Split a few posts.  Planted 4 fruit trees in garden & 1 medlar opposite end of house.  Steady rain set in the afternoon.

SUN 28 JULY 1901
Fine dull day.  All at home.  Skinned hogt on back.
MON 29   Boiled some dogs meat & mangolds for pigs.  El & co drove to P.G Grants & met Charlie at express.
TU 30   Heavy continuous rain at dinner time.  Charlie went home, left here by coach.
WED 31   Heavy showers today.  Sent a half can of milk to the factory today, only sent it twice last week.  John got ½ bushel wheat at Beckt 2/-   A good deal of rain has fallen this month.
TH 1st AUGUST
Top went through ewes & found a ewe & lamb.  Sent house insurance money £1.12 to I Sandtmann.  Also Reserve rent £2.5.6.  Shook manger grasseed on bare spots.  Mrs Thodsen & her 3 children this afternoon.
FR 2   Snow this morning.  Disappeared before noon.  John walked to school.  Split a few henau posts on flat.  Babba at Thodsens
SAT 3   Rough day, very high winds.  Helped John to keep Friis hay from being blown away.  Went to Glass’ meeting  of Farmers Union.  Some snow.

SUN 4 AUGUST 1901
All at home.  Put Lilly out on back.  A very drying fine day.  A ewe with twins on flat.
MON 5   Four ewes lambed last night.  Top going through them found a ewe cast on flat with twins one dead.  Ewe weak took her in on sledge.  El & co drove to Library, gave them cheque £2.  She saw Mrs Webber & baby.  Very fine day.
TU 6   Sledged branches lopped off trees in plantations, out on to road.  El & co drove to Mrs Fribergs.  Two ewes with singles.  Put in post for slip rails on corner of lawn.
WED 7   A few new lambs came last night.  El & Co drove to factory for butter & gave a lamb to Oldenshaw.  She dug in garden & put in some seeds.  Fixed the roof of cowshed & timbered down the iron.
TH 8   Put in 21 fruit trees for Mr C A Friis, near his house & 8 on an island up the creek.  Very fine day.  Two or three ewes lambed last night.  El & Co working in flower garden.  Mrs L Andersen called.  Letter from George.

FR 9 AUGUST 1901
Dug in some oak netting enclosure.  Planted a row of Raspberrie plants in threes.  And a few strawberry plants.  Killed a rooster in the morning and a fat ewe at night.  Mrs Collinge called with a Subn list for Mr Otto Engelbretsen   El gave 2/6.  Mrs Robertson called.  Stanley Gribble here tonight.
SAT 10   John took a piece of mutton to C A Friis.  Planted an oak pine & macracarpa in oak plantation.  Carried out to back a sack of manger grasseed & shook it in bare worm eaten places.  Rain last night & today.  15 or 20 ewes lambed last night.  They are no trouble so far.  John went with mare & dray to Norsewood.  Took a bit of firewood to P.G. Grant & got from him two cases, one zinc lined.  He bought 2 hand brushes at WHR’s.  He tried to get some seed potatoes from Johansen, had none.  A letter from Jillie Thodsen to Top.  Steady rain just now and nearly all day.

SUN 11 AUGUST 1901
Rain all last night, not much rain today.  Brought in 2 ewes to sheep yards.  One ewe had twins on Widerups, her teats were too large for them to suck, both died, put the skin of one twin on a spare lamb & she took to it.  Another ewe had a big weak cold lamb on flat, he did not suck befor I took him in to sheep yards, good mother, they are all right now.  Tonight is cold showery & bad for lambs.  Carried in hoggt that died on reserve.
MON 12   Continuous rain all last night.  Went through ewes, a good many came last night.  El & Top to Norsewood, latter took £2.10 out of S Bank.  Paid sheep tax 14/-   Boiled the last of the mangolds & a hogget for pigs.  Axel Hansen fell off John’s pony (doublebank) coming home from school & was somewhat hurt.  Planted 2 willows (yellow) on flat.  Planted young wattle in long plantation instead of Gum which died.  A very fine day for this.  John got flask of brandy for his mother.

TU 13 AUGUST 1901
Lambs coming steady.  A black one last night.  El & babba in bed all day.  Misses Fribergs came in the afternoon.  A ewe with dead lamb   Got her in & put a twin on her.  Killed a fat ewe for Mr Fourneau.  Killed a white pullet for flying into garden, a very fine day.
WED 14   Top went through Ridges & Widerups & found a ewe cast.  I went over flat sledged in two loads of wood for washouse.  Stuck in 4 willows yesterday & 6 today in a gully on flat.  El in bed a little better today.  Babba quite well.
TH 15   John took a sheep cut up, on his saddle to Orm for 1st train directed to Mr Fourneau, he got to station in time to send it & paid 2/1.  We got today from Frances, washing dolly, apple cuttings, bulbs & letter from Mrs Frances.  A lot of rain fell last night & some today.  Planted willow at dam on back.  Filly in reserve.  Mare calf & 3 cows to give hay to.  El a little better today.  Still in bed, 3 days.

FR 16 AUGUST 1901
Found ewe cast on flat with dead lamb alongside her.  Ewes lambing steadily.  Another black lamb on flat.  Babba let Bran go off chain, he cleared out, but came home in the evening.  Planted oak near brown gate.  Put in 2 posts in fence flat – Ridges.  Bought a pair of T hinges at Becketts for 2/-  A spring day.
SAT 17   Through ewes & lambs.  No fresh ones.  Killed pig.  J Neal here at dinnertime   Asked me to enrol him as a member of the Farmers Union.  Attended a meeting of the latter at 8 PM Lutheran Hall.  About 16 members joined.  I amongst them.
SUN 18   All at home.  Calm day.  No fresh lambs last night.  Cut up pig & rubbed some salt on pork & laid it in big trough.
MON 19   Only 2 or 3 ewes lambed last night.  Sledged up long face cuts [?] etc to fence corner garden, also posts & tools.  A fine spring day.  Mrs Beckett & 2 children.  El up today & half the day yesterday.

TU 20 AUGUST 1901
Fenced in a garden in a corner of flat – Back – ridges.  Top went through sheep 2 fresh lambs, put in a row of peas in new garden.  Letter from Rosebank & Tilly Thodsen
WED 21   Found ewe lying down lambing.  Helped her.  Had to take her in on the sledge with her lamb.  She had another lamb after being brought in.  Dug a bit in new garden.  Poor babba crying (her teeth).
TH 22   Found a splendid ewe dead on flat after lambing, with a good single lamb.  Top goes through Widerups & ridges.  She found a dead lamb on Widerups, put its skin on the other lamb & the ewe took to it.  Got by coach 45lbs seed potatoes (puritans) from Mr Fourneau.  Put in 3 rows in new garden, manured 2 rows next the peas did not manure the 3rd row.  Sledged up rotted sheepdung.  Top got a watch by post from Charlie.  Showery day.  Chimney on fire tonight.

FR 23 AUGUST 1901
Swept two chimneys.  Went through all ewes & lambs, 5 or 6 lambed last night.  Put in 2 rows of potatoes in new garden.  Round seed so far 4 rows next peas.
SAT 24   Sledged out manure to new garden.  Put in 2 rows of cut seed potatoes.  John split & sledged in firewood.  A few lambs come every night.  Went to Becketts at night.  A letter from Mrs Sinclair.  Soft spring weather.
SUN 25   El Ev & John to Orm Church & in the afternoon they with Top went to Norsewood shool house church.  Quintrell preached to them at both places.  I went to Neals & dined at Ada’s   Saw cattle at back.  Bridget springing fast.
MON 26   Put in some potatoes.  Carl Smidth carted from Orm a window & glass door for back verandah.  A very fine day.  Frosty.
TU 27   Cow Bridget had white heifer calf yesterday.  Got them home from back.  El & Mrs Callender to Makatoku.  Twin lambs died. Ewe has deficient teats.

WED 28 AUGUST 1901
Sawed & split some rails & henau posts on flat.  Got in ewe about to lamb & had to take lamb from her, both all right now.  El & Co. at Mrs Oldershaw.  Planted 4 wattles in back garden & planted a few, 24 seed potatoes at home.
TH 29   Sawed & split a few posts.  Put in a row of potatoes in garden.  Top found a dead lamb with a ewe in Widerups.  Got in & put the skin on a twin.  El & Co. drove to Mrs Vigers
FR 30   Three or four fresh lambs last night   Two more black ones, four now.  Sledged posts & rails to Corner plantation.  El & Co. went to 4 houses today.
SAT 31   Worked at corner plantation fence.  Very few lambs coming.  Split some long henau posts – 7 ft to fence single trees against horses.  Farmers meeting adjourned.  All except John went to concert.  “Beck memories Monument.  El sang, I chair, good concert.  Top went to Gribbles tonight.  This weather is like summer.

SUN 1st SEPTEMBER 1901
All except Top went to Orm church.  Mrs D H Grant spent the afternoon here.  Fine day.
MON 2   One or two ewes lambed last night.  Planted poplar tree in sheep yard plantation.  Put in 4 blocks to stand tank on.  A little rain.
TU 3   Leveled & painted 4 x 2’s to lay on blocks on which tank stands, dug out old blocks fixed tank on new blocks.  Some light rain.  El & Co. bought at Randersons goods = 16/4.
WED 4   Laid down battens outside back door   Mrs & Miss Randerson.  Rain most of the day.
TH 5   Some rain now & then nearly all day.  2 fresh lambs last night.  Started to make a wheelbarrow.  Letters from Geo & Cec Wallace.
FR 6   Finished the barrow.  Sledged some posts to fence & put up a couple of pannels.  Good spring day.
SAT 7   A black dog chased the lambs & ewes through Widerups & down to Mafekin bridge.  Finished 3 rail & netting fence on flat corner.  Attended Farmers Union in Lu Hall and a Committee of 13 members elected.

SUN 8 SEPT 1901
Found wether cast on back, not long down.  El Ev & John went to Orm Church.  Came home early.  John spent most of the day with other boys at Nicholaisens with Olaf.  Saw 2 hares on back.  Steady rain tonight.
MON 9   Planted trees in “corner plantation”.   3 macrocarpa, 3 wallnuts a few wattles & some pines.  A very fine day.  Washed & hung 2 hams & 2 shoulders of bacon.  Very fine day.  An Anarchist fired at & put 2 bullets into President McKinley.  Czolgosz anarchist.
TU 10   Planted & fenced a single pinus tree between sheepyards & oak plantation.  Old W. Hegh Committed suicide last night by hanging.  Dug some in netting garden.  Rung the 2 little pigs.  El & Co got factory money 17/10.  Top found a big single lamb dead.
WED 11   Good rain this morning.  Tank half full.  Found lamb on flat with his head caught under a small log, he cannot stand.  Put a string of red rags & quills over peas in new garden as the birds were pulling them up.

TH 12 SEPTEMBER 1901
Finished digging garden.  Went to C O Hegh’s funeral with El & Ev.  C.A. Friis brought me some seed potatoes.  Mrs Raisher called.
FR 13   Found a motherless lamb on back.  Put him on flat.  Found a big dead lamb with his head under a small log.  Put in 3 rows of seed potatoes in garden.  Mrs Thodsen & children here.  Got in Reserve sheep, 22 & dagged them left 2 weak ones in Res = 24.  The grass showing up nicely in Reserve & front.
SAT 14   Morning boisterous, considered it too rough to dock the lambs.  Weatherboarded the back verandah.  Rumoured that T Jessop is sick.  John rode up to see him.  A letter from Mrs Lochhead.  Windy tonight.
SUN 15   Windy day.  Pulled the wool off 2 old ewes on back.  “Darkey” & “Strawberry” springing got them in to Reserve.  John saw 2 hares
MON 16   Worked at window on back verandah.  News of the death of President McKinley.  A fearful rough evening.  Wind & rain

TU 17 SEP 1901
Went through ewes & lambs.  Two big wattle trees blown down last night, broken off level with the ground, both appeared diseased where broken off.  One fell into the garden across paling fence & broke it down.  It was the biggest tree in the plantation.  Will not plant any more “tall spreading  wattles”.  Mrs A Collins and Miss Randerson called.  This day fine.
WED 18   Worked at door & window at back exchanged doors.  High wind all day.  No one went through ewes & lambs today.
TH 19   Hung glass door & fixed round both doors.  Mrs Hetty Collins got buggy to go to Orm for her invalid sister.  El & Co drove to Norsewood in her gig.  Wind gone down.  A nice day.  Letters from Charlie & Fourneau.
FR 20   Sledged in a load of firewood.  Got in a cut of ewes & lambs & docked after John came from school & put them on Ridges.

SAT 21 SEPT 1901
Put in some carrot seed in netting garden.  Got in ewes & lambs & docked after John came from school at 1 o’clock.  255 ewes & 245 lambs more ewe lambs by 40.  Put the lot on the ridges.  Top found a dead ewe on flat & a big dead lamb.  A very fine day for docking.  Attended “Farmers Union Com Meeting” at Becketts.  Next meeting 5th Nov.
SUN 22   Mustered back with John.  Found a dead hoggt & a poor old ewe nearly dead.  Put all ewes & lambs on back.  Pulled the wool off dead ewe on flat & found a dead black lamb on flat, this leaves 3 black lambs.  Found a big dead lamb on flat.  Went with El to Blairgowrie & got home before milking time.  Children went to church in school house.
MON 23   Pulled the wool off 3 dead hoggs & skinned old ewe on back.  Got factory cheque £1.8.0.   Chopped away wattle which was blow into garden.

TU 24 SEPT 1901
Put in carrot seed in “Yew tree garden”   Brought in sheep & skin “old ewe” from back.  All hands to Montgomeries show.
WED 25   Put in row of mangolds in garden.  Went to Becketts & got him to draw out a petition  asking minister for a reduction in wool freight.  Mr Thompson Sec to Farmers Union is to Communicate with other Unions on this subject.  Went to Vestry meeting Orm.  Home with Morgan.
TH 26   Dug a bit in garden & put in a row of peas.  Put up some shelves in scullery.  Did some painting on house.  Visitors – Mrs Webber & Miss Foster.  Rev & Mrs Wills.  Top & John rode to Hulena’s & Gollans with a petition for wool freight reduction, after tea.
FR 27   Dug 3 holes in garden, put in lambs tails & sheep shanks & planted pumpkins on top.  Painted back part of house & parts of ends.  El & Co to Norsewood.  Came on steady rain.  John called at Planks & H Newlings.

SAT 28 SEPT 1901
Painting house.  John took 2 bundles of skins to Orm. Station for Wms & Kettle when he went for his 1/2 day at school.  El & co drove to Norsewood, exchanged buggy for Gowers gig to make the driving easier for their invalid daughter Mrs Marsh, who is gone to Waipuk hospital   Top rode to Gribbles on filly.  Hilda came back with her & is here tonight.
SUN 29   Rain last night and some today it is doing good.  The cow “Darkie” calved in Reserve today a heifer a big heavy calf.  Took calf away without much trouble.  Went out on back with John & babba.  Saw a young lamb, dropped out there.  Good grass on back, reserve & not bad in front paddocks.  A good month this.
MON 30   Painting house.  El & Co at Mrs Cummings   Darkie’s calf, white body & face, red ears & head.  Grass looks well after the rain.

TU 1st OCT 1901
Painted iron over verandah & ends of house.  Frost last night, grass white this morning.  Miss Marsh brought back the buggy & took her gig.  El & Co. went to Norsewood & called at Walter Gower’s.  John rode round the block after school & got signatures to Wool petition
WED 2   Painting house.  Cut up wattle which fell on to a macracarpa in gully plantation one that was blown down.  El & Co. to see Mrs Calander   Sledged in a bit of firewood which John split on flat.  Put mare into sheep yard plantation.
TH 3   Nice rain last night & some showers today  Strawberry had a heifer calf early this morning on Reserve flat, red spots & white.  Anniversary of my landing in N.Z. in 1873.  Shook out hay in woolshed and got a sackful of hayseed.  Spring day.
FR 4   Painting the house part of the day.  A traveler called with an 8 day clock 42/- is the price to be delivered in March, ordered one.  Mrs Watson & Miss Richardson called.

SAT 5 OCT 1901
Put in gate post at 1st gate & mended fence.  Sawed & split firewood on flat with John.  Babba went to sleep under a log.  Took cow “Buttercup’ to Larsens bull.  Attended Union meeting in Lutheran Hall.
SUN 6   All at home, rough day at first.  Fine in the afternoon.  Children saw rabbit on back.
MON 7   Put broad battens at back door for wood.  – box to stand on & pot box.  Sledged firewood
TU 8   John found a dry ewe cast on back last evening when riding across to Blairgowrie he put it on the other side.  I sledged her in this morning, she is getting all right.  Sledged accacia tops out on to road. John saw a rabbit on back this evening.  Five little goslins out.  Brought them home.
WE 9   Drove to Norsewood with El & Co. to P. G. Grants   Got kerosene, brown sugar and other groceries at Becketts.  Painted front of cow shed
TH 10   Got tickets for Hastings.  Went by express.  Stayed at Mr McNutts.  Very fine day.

FR 11 OCT 1901
Went to show from Te Aute also Mr & Mrs McNutt & the children.  Calm hot day.  A great show.
SAT 12   At McNutts all day resting.  Nice day.
SUN 13   Drove Mrs Mc El & Charlie to Taits.
MON 14   Mrs McNutt drove us to Te Aute station & we left in the 8.30 train, tot to Orm at midday came home in coach.  Put in some cabbage plants which were given to El by Miss Tait.  Brought home a motherless ½ bred Lester Lincoln ram lamb, a pet.
TU 15   Painted cowshed.  Some light showers.
WED 14   Painting woolshed.  El & Co. burning off in Reserve.  Milly Ericksen called, afternoon.  Went through sheep.  A ewe cast & dead in Widerups, a wether cast, not dead.  A ewe dead on back not cast, pulled wool off both ewes.  John brought home the two cows from Jens Larsens early this morning.  The cow “Bridget” was with the bull last night.  Sultry weather.

TH 17 OCT 1901
Took bale of crutchings & case of empty bottles for Robjohn & Son to Railway station.  Painting fence round graves in cemetery with El & Babba.  Rain in the evening.  Carried home a weak hoggt for dogs.
FR 18   Walked over paddocks & saw all the sheep.  Did a little work in the garden.  Letters from Quintrell on church matters & C Hall MHR in answer to petition on Wool frieght
SAT 19   Drove to Cemetery & finished painting the fence.  Put a ring in one of the pigs.  A little frost this morning.  Miss Friberg called.  John & Gertie gone to concert tonight (Beck Memorial)   El sold 8 doz eggs at 8d per dozen.  Sold previously eggs at 6d & some at 7d per doz.
SUN 20   At home, two children at school church.  Mr & Mrs Beckett & children for tea also Alf Neal & sister.  Bonnie here tonight.  Frosty.
MON 21   Topholm took his young entire out of reserve.  Filly with him.  Dagged 78 sheep.  Put some in Reserve.  6 young lambs.

TU 22 OCT 1901
Dagged the sheep which were in the yard last night & got in the ones on the ridges & put 2 ewes & 3 lambs in Reserve.  The two Miss McNutts & Mrs Vigers came at tea time.
WED 23   Got in remainder of sheep with some ewes & lambs & dagged the lot.  367.  72 of them in Reserve & 27 lambs amongst them.  Got factory cheque  £1.6.3   Mrs Beckett came for Bonnie.  Mrs Thodsen & children here today.  Widerups & ridges look bare, Flat not so bad.  Found a dead ewe on back, near O’Hara’s fence.
TH 24   Skinned ewe on back & found another ewe cast & dead under a log.  Carried home dead wool, & watered young trees in plantation, ground dry & hard, grass nearly at a stand still.  Showers in the afternoon.  Put 4 young calves out of pig paddock into gully plantation.  John rode out to back & brought “Lilly” in, springing.

FR 25 OCT 1901
Chrissie had a foal last night, filly.  The can of milk fell off the barrow this morning and was all spilled except a gallon or two.  Alice sent a photo of her father and a letter, a letter also from George.  Mrs Raisher & children in the afternoon.  Wheeled manure & put in mangolds seeds.
SAT 26   Put in mangolds in garden & threw out weeds etc.  John cleaned out well & put in barrel.  Made a dam across creek.  At night went to township.  No Farmers meeting, only 7 or 8 turned up.  Top got a letter from Ella Lee.  Big tea meeting in the Salvation Barracks.  Fine dry weather.
SUN 27   All at home.  Walked over back & found a dead ewe in a small water hole where she fell in & got on her back.
MON 28   Getting weeds out of garden & cutting grass etc.  Sent two cans of milk this morning by Adela.  John got a watch from Charlie today.  “Darkie” with the Larsens Bull tonight.

TU 29 OCT 1901
Put in some carrot seed in garden and threw out weeds.  Found hoggt cast on flat.  Very dry weather, have to throw water on the vegetables in garden.  Mr Drake called for annual return of farm belongings.  John borrowed a pound off Mr Beckett.
WED 30   Earthed up potatoes in new garden.  Dug in garden & shook turnip seed.  Sent Johns money £1.17.10  to Agent Mutual Life Association Napier.  F. Forward called with his Entire Nugget.  Another very dry day.  Rain wanted for gardens.  Top went through sheep today.
TH 31   Found a hoggt cast in Reserve, on his back for 2 or 3 days.  Thinned carrots in far garden.  Put 2 lambs back to their mothers on back, thro [?] fence with dog.  A very little light rain this morning.  Watered some things in garden.  This has been a dry month, but grass fair at present.

FR 1st NOV 1901
Manured & put in two drills of potatoes in garden, about 20 seed of eating potatoes as an experiment.  Dug a bit, ground very dry.  Went to the funeral of Mrs Marsh, which left Arthur Collins’s.  Shore the 5 rams.  Lilly had heifer calf.
SAT 2   Got in reserve sheep  Shore 7 & put them & the woolly ones out on Ridges.  Shore the ewes with the late lambs & put them in Reserve = 23.  Docked the lambs – 29  W 13.  E 16.  Docked before 245, two died that I know of.  Came on steady rain after we finished docking & putting ewes & lambs in Reserve about 6.30.  Got Wms & Kettles  £4.18.9 cheque for crutchings 2 ¾ d & skins 2 ¼ 2 ¾.  Too wet to go to Lutheran tea meeting tonight.
SUN 3   Got in woolly ewe off Flat and shore her.  24.  Her lamb was in Reserve, put her in with her lamb.  John at CC Smiths, got 3 trout.  Found 2 cast in Widerups.  2 Miss McNutts afternoon.  Put 29 woolly sheep in shed.

MON 4 NOV 1901
Bridget round on 5th.  Commenced to shear after breakfast.  Shore about 43 & put 26 in shed tonight.  F Forward came with enter [?] to Chrissie.
NOV 5th   Guy Fawkes Day.  Shore 58.  El picked up & rolled.  John & Top put all wolly sheep off Widerups into ridges.  Shorn sheep on Flat.  Put 60 into shed tonight.
WED 6   Shore 60 sheep & 1 lamb (one ewe amongst those shorn)  A dog killed lamb in reserve.  Shoffler came for 2 bales.  Sold him 2 for 5/-.  Youngsters got in sheep.
TH 7   Shore 61. Came on wet.  Cold showers About 257 sheep shorn now.
FR 8   Went to Mr Becketts in the morning with subscription list for Stipend fund got a bag sugar & 1lb tea.  Got in sheep and shore about 36.  Top gone to a meeting at Christophersens (Sanders girl).  Put 21 woolly sheep in shed tonight.  Wrote Wms & K for 14 ¾ bales & 1/- [?]  Ground very dry again.

SAT 9 NOV 1901
Shore 14 before breakfast.  Kings B.day.  Got in woolly sheep = 63.  Counted out on ridges & Widerups 293 & 24 in Reserve.  One woolly sheep dead in ridges.  John went to boys cricket match  Orm.  12 woolly sheep left in shed tonight.  Jessie McNutt came & gone with El & Top to Cricketers Concert.
SUN 10   Shore the 12 in shed early this morning & put them on Ridges.  All dry sheep shorn.  Cold showers today, the rain does very little good to the ground.  Jessie left afternoon.
MON 11   Went with Top & babba & mustered ewes & lambs & put them on flat.  Found a dead ewe cast & 2 cast which we lifted.  Hoed up & wed the potatoes in garden & thinned mangolds.  Put cow dung & tied bagging over elm trees in pig paddock which the pigs barked.  Got in ewes & lambs & put some in shed.  Put 2 posts in fence, back – flat.

TU 12  NOV 1901
Star calved this morning, bull, very heavy calf.  Shearing ewes & lambs.  Shore 41 ewes & 34 lambs & put them on ridges.  Miss Christopherson came with tickets to be sold by Top for concert to help Sanders girl.  Dry weather.  Harsh wind blowing.
WED 13   Shearing ewes & lambs.  In the evening went with El & Top to the wedding of R Smith & Miss Martin.  Left at 12.30.
TH 14   Shearing ewes & lambs.  Rough day.  Hail & rain, cold.  I have not kept a correct account of shorn sheep going out.  Make it 77 ewes 2 wethers & 3 fat ewes so far.  A hen sitting for a week on 9 turkey eggs.  The eggs are gone, not a sign of a shell.
FR 15   Birthday.  Pressed 2 bales of wool & put another in the box ready for pressing.  Got in & put in pens 24 ewes & 25 lambs.  The rain did not do much good.  Ground very hard.

SAT 16 NOV 1901
Shearing up to nearly 5 o’clock.  Killed a longtail lamb.  Went to Social in Village Hall.  Top & Milly Ericksen door keepers.  Dancing songs & games.  £10.7 taken.  To buy sewing machine & invalid’s chair for Sanders girl.  Babba & mamma at home.  Some rain.
SUN 17   All at home.  El & Co at Thodsens.  John & Babba took them a ¼ of lamb.
MON 18   Go in 38 ewes & their lambs, amongst them 1 four tooth wether & 1 fat ewe.  In the evening John got in 17 ewes & their lambs.  He took Darkie to Larsens bull.
TU 19   Shore the ewes & their lambs which were in shed.  Got in 13 & their lambs then rain came on & afterwards a cold wind, rough night.  Killed w hogget.  El got another bottle P Food today from Prior Danewirk, a large one this time.
WED 20   Shearing ewes & lambs.  Ewes very daggy.  Dag them on the board.  Sent ¼ wether Fourneau.

TH 21 NOV 1901
Got factory cheque £3.6.1.  Shearing heavy daggy ewes & lambs   El, Top & babba got in remainder of woolly sheep off Flat.  9 in shed tonight & about 15 in yard to be shorn & about 50 lambs.
FR 22   Finished the ewes.  El Top & babba got in all sheep off Flat & put all the woolly lambs in the shed.  16 left tonight.  Canon Webb called, but did not come to shed.
SAT 23   Finished shearing this morning.  All hands went to Danevirk.  We hired a horse from Carl Schmidt (Moses).  Bought boots in Danevirk & fruit, peas, potatoes etc home after 5 and then went to Wesleyan tea meeting.  Home after 12.
SUN 24   Walked across paddocks to Neals & C C Smiths to enquire about sheep buyer.  Mrs Gribble & her pa & ma & little girl here for dinner & tea.  Mr Mrs Beckett & children for tea.  Some rain in the afternoon.  The weather turned cold.

MON 25 NOV 1901
Mustered sheep on back section & raced off fat ewes & wether roughly.  Put store sheep back again & fats on flat.  John took mare & foal to Forwards Entire this morning.  Late home with them.  Pressed a bale of wool.  Top helped me.
TU 26   Got in ewes & lambs & picked out 16 fats & put them on flat.  Opened [?] at 3 gateways & let ewes & lambs draw out on back.  A frost this morning the potatoes are nipped.  We pressed 3 bales.  The Cattle Inspector called here & saw the cows in the stockyard.
WED 27   Pressed the remainder of the wool except the Bellies, dead & pieces. 650 fleeces & 26 fleeces left over since last year, total 676.  Some light misty rain today, not much use.
TH 28   Finished the pressing of the 13th & last bale, locks bellies & dead on top bought things at P.G. Grants & Becketts.  C Smidths express took 5 bales to station.

FR 29 NOV 1901
Put in a few short rows of cabbage plants & did some weeding.  Got down 4 bales to Orm. & put 9 bales on truck.  John’s school days over in Orm.  Some light rain.  Letter Mrs McNutt.
SAT 30   Weeding carrots until dinner time.  El & Co. drove mare, for the first time without foal to Gribbles.  Top staying there tonight.  Took the remaining four bales of wool in C Schmidt express & put them on truck, goes to Napier tonight.  Sent letter of description to Wms & Kettle.  Lively has small bull calf.
SUN 1st DECEMBER
All at home except Top.  Went out to back with Babba & John.  Came across two old Morepokes & young one.  John caught the young one, and let him go again.  At Mr Becketts tonight & when we came home at nearly 10 o’clock.  Top Hilda & Stanley Gribble was here.
MON 2   John got mare shod, new set at Collinge.  Picked out 48 wethers & 64 ewes, fat & put them on the flat & wrote to McGilvray.  John gone to Napier.  El & co. drove him to Orm.

TU 3 DEC 1901
Finished weeding the carrots.  Oiled some of the cart harness.  El & Co. drove to Mr Gowers they were not at home so they went to E Cullings.  Mrs Becket with them.  A slight shower did not good.  Tank nearly empty again.
WED 4   Wheeled all dags away from shed into garden.  Put the two biggest calves into Reserve.  Carried water from spring to garden.  El & co. at Martins – a meeting about Church of England Social on New Years eve.  A telegram from McGillivray Re price of wethers 9/- maiden ewes 8/- old 7/6.  Weights of wool from Willliams & Kettle.
TH 5   Made drain at spring on hill for pipes to be laid.  Mr Herd tuned piano.  A hot day.
FR 6   Laid pipes from spring to sunken pipes & filled up round pipes & box.  El & Co. driving about amongst the houses begging for New Years Eve Social.  Put cows in Ridges last night & tonight again (7)   John came home from Napier at midday.  Top drove in for him.

SAT 7 DEC 1901
Fixed up fence behind firewood.  Box filled this morning with beautiful clear water.
SUN 8   All at home.  Dry harsh warm day.
MON 9   Made or erected clothesline on hill, El & Co. washed under willow at pipes & hung clothes on new line.  Made swing in gully for Babba.  John walked to school.  The filly wants shoeing.  A good heavy shower put water in tank, nearly half full.  Painted the bottom of tank.  Nils Olsen bought sack of fowl wheat.  Cut the tops off 3 dip tins for it.
TU 10   Did a little work about the place.  Mrs Thodsen & 3 children & Mrs Cumming for lunch.  El & Co. drove Mrs Cumming home.  El tea at P.G. Grants & at a meeting in Wesleyan church.  Very heavy welcome rain.
WED 11   John had a letter from F Adean last night.  Put ewes & lambs out of reserve into Widerups.  25 ewes 29 lambs 3 or 4 of the latter no good.  Hilda Gribble brought 5 little ducks last night.  El & Co. drove to Norsewood.

TH 12 DEC 1901
Got in wethers & ewes off flat & branded ewes with red paint – bottle brand, did not brand the wethers – 45.  Ewes 65 or 67.  put them on back.  Thinned some mangolds in garden & put in 15 seed potatoes to experiment with   put dry dags in with them & poured over them some liquid manure.  A few drops of rain.
FR 13   Steady rain all day.  Fixed up & repaired a chair in shed.  Note from JHB to see Mr Wills
SAT 14   A wet day.  Some very heavy showers.  Picked Kapoc with El & John in woolshed.  Gilbert McLeod called.  Got in a sledge load of firewood with Chessie.  I stayed at home at night with Babba.  The others went to school concert.  Hilda came back with them.
SUN 15   Rough day.  Went with El to see Mr Wills he looks very ill.  Knows he is incurable.  When we came back CC Smith & Ada here also Alf Neal, latter & John gone to Lutheran church.  Top gone to see Hilda towards home.

MON 16 DEC 1901
Sent letter to Williams & Kettle to alter reserve on 12 bales of wool from 4d to 3 ½d.  John took Chessie & foal to Forwards & left them there until evening.  Came home from School that way.  Mustered back with Top.  Picked out 118 ewes & wethers & put them on ridges.  Ewes & lambs on flat.  Showery evening & very cold.
TU 17   Some showers in the forenoon.  Dug some potatoes in far garden & pulled carrots a poor crop of potatoes through drought & frost.  Made a three legged stool for Babba to milk on.  El & Co. gone to Orm school concert.  Gave a lift to Rev Mr Foston & Mrs Foston.  Babba with me.
WED 18   All at Orm School concert at night.  John took Star to Larsen Bull.
TH 19   Split some henau posts on flat.  Rough windy day.  Wms & Kettle letter wool passed in at 3 ¼.  Bellies etc sold at 2 ½.  No scholarship for John he was 30th.  A meeting at Becketts for church concert.  Present Beckett Morgan Martin & Self.  Alf Neal called.  Finished shearing at Gollan.

FR 20 DEC 1901
Rough day with showers.  El & Co. drove to Becketts & bought groceries, scythe blade reap hook stone etc.  Mrs Thodsen Jun went with her to P.G. Grants & got dress and is making it for her.  Jessie & Mary McNutt came & went back by coach.  Cut a little long grass in garden.  A telegram from George, coming tomorrow.  Sent letter to Wms & K not to take 3 ¼ for wool
SAT 21   Mr McGillivray came before breakfast & picked out 38 wethers & 67 ewes.  The price dropped again immediately after mine were sold.  He orders trucks.  I put the sheep on the trucks on Monday at Makatoku.  Mowed the grass in the garden   Found “Rosie” a young cow due to calve in Jan, dead in the slip gully in a hole in the creek.  George came at midday.  John took Lively to Larsens Bull.
SUN 22   All except Top went to see where “Rosie” was lying dead.  Babba on horseback.  Heavy rain fell in the evening.

MON 23 DEC 1901
Took the 105 fat sheep to Makatoku and put them on two trucks.  George & babba came in buggy.  Tried mare with Entire.  Forward pronounces her all right.  Got in some ewes & lambs off back & killed 2 lambs one for ourselves & one for Fourneaus.  Sold one to Alick Hegh for 10/-   Steady rain tonight   Got Factory cheque today for £3.6.1 after deducting 8/5 overpay last month.
TU 24   Did no work today except to sledge in some greeneries from back section.  Got some fern trees etc.  Youngsters met Charlie at station all hands went up on hill.  A great many people about.  El on hill getting things.  Paid P.G. Grant £4.
WED 25 XMAS
John & babba met Frank Adean at station.  Cose[?] day.  Forenoon fine.  Plenty of rain in the afternoon.  Paid 15/6 to Adela – up to 1st Jan. 1902.  Frank brought 2 pidgeons to John.  Charlie made a cage for them.  All home tonight

26th DEC 1901
Fine day.  George & Charlie gone to Te Aute in Express train.  Top brought back Wills’ two boys.  Sledged in some firewood from Back.
FR 27   Plenty of mushrooms about.  John & Frank took Strawberry to bull.  Got letter from Wms & Kettle to say eleven bales of wool sold privately at 3 ½ per lb.  Only a bale of lambs to be sold now.  El got provisions at Becketts for New yr. Social.
SAT 28   Mustered back sheep picked out ewes & lambs & put them on Widerups.  Dry sheep on back.  One lamb had his leg broken, put splints on it.  Hot day.  All hands went to Gribbles social. George here.  Came back from Napier.  Two little wills’ sent home.
SUN 29   All hands at home.  George, El & the boys gathered a box full of mushrooms.
MON 30   E baking pastry all day.  I & Frank drove to O’Hara’s & Ericksens for eggs etc.  Drove to Wills’ & gave them some Napier cheese.  Cheque for fat sheep today £45.16.0

Got ferns etc in scrub & decorated Village Hall with F Martin George etc.  Got up pastry etc & erected tables, a good spread.  A fine day & night and a good many people.  Games etc up to 12 o’clock.  Dancers remained in hall after social & paid something to Brieske for use of hall.  Walked home.  Sent letter to Bank with cheque for £45.16.0
WED 1st JANUARY 1902
We drove up to hall & washed up delf [?] and removed same from hall & some provisions & left some cakes etc for a social to be held on Thursday night on account of 2 troopers leaving for war.
TH 2   Frank gathered mushroom before breakfast to take home, the morning wet.  John drove to Orm. for Mrs Wallace & Cecil & Norman.  George drove Frank to station.  Steady rain all the afternoon & night.  None of us went to Social which was to be held for F Hutchinson & Lund.

FR 3 JAN 1902
Constant rain all last night & some this morning.  J W Cook from Waipukurau came by coach at dinner time.  Drove him up to see J O’Hara’s place.  No one at home saw Mr Thompson.  Called & saw Gundrie & Cook & he talked about the letting of the farm.  Top drove George to Orm.  He goes to Palmerston tonight.  A box & a tin of mushrooms left at station to go to Lang Napier tomorrow.  Cook walked to Mrs Finsch’s to see about leasing her farm.  Mrs Westall & her children Erica Gertrude & Siggie came & had tea.  J O’Hara came at night to see Cook, directed him to Finsch.  Wool cheque from Wms & Kettle £68.4.1.  El & Mrs Wallace drove to Becketts & bought blankets slippers etc.  Dull calm night.  The bale of lambs wool not sold yet.

Paid to P.G. Grant a cheque for £25 & got change = to £13.  Sent cheque £68.4.1 to Union Bank today.  W Cook after looking at Mrs Finsch’s farm stayed at Tom Nickolls’ last night & then came here at 11 o’clock, at 3 o’clock John drove him to Orm. & brought back 2 Wills’s boys.
SUN 5   Rain most of the day.  All at home.  John put all ewes & lambs on to Flat.
MON 6   Sent rates to Waipawa Co Co £3.10.9   Cheque to F Forward £3.3.0.  Cheque to Dinwiddie Walker £1.6.0.  Two one pounds notes (£2)  to A.B. Gibson   To McFarlane Orm. Blacksmith £ this has not been delivered today.  Mrs Cook from Mr Herbert came by coach after dinner.  John drove her to O’Hara’s in the rain.
TU 7   John Cecil & Norman drove to Orm & sent mushrooms by 1st train & then took mare to Forwards.  Last night Mr Morgan came with £2.10. church money.

El & Co. at S Norsewood.  Got the church & ticket account from Mrs Becketts   John & the boys sledged in firewood.  Strained wires, ridges – long plantation.  Put the 2 pet lambs on ridges, no grass in pig paddock.  Weaned the two oldest calves in reserve.  Mrs Cook went down in coach.  Called here.
TH 9   Put in some parsnips & cabbage seed.  Sledged in some maire firewood.  C A Friis branded 3 hiefers of his in old sheep yards.  Let ewes & lambs over all front paddocks.  Dull cloudy weather nearly always
FR 10   Rain again.  Showers very often today.  John & Cecil went to Morgans with Becketts Church Social account.  Also to H Mortensens with rat trap.  W H Randerson sent by Claude Pollard, oatmeal, sugar & Flour.  Sent by C Schmidt tin (8lbs) mushrooms.
SAT 11   Got in the 5 cattle on the back & put them in reserve.  Paid O’Hara £1.1 4 for meat.  Paid McFarlane £1.4.0.  Paid W.H. Randerson £

At home, Mrs Wallace El Top John & Cecil to Lutheran church tonight.  Edy Martin for tea.  Gertie & Norman to school church today.  Fine day, no rain, very hot.
MON 13   Sawed & split matai log on flat for firewood.  Some light rain.  Helped El John and Mrs Wallace to tease Kopock.  A swarm of bees on macracarpa tree in gully plantation.  Put them in a box.  Got in & killed 2 tooth wether.
TU 14   Drove to Matamau with Mrs Wallace Eva & Norman.  Had lunch at Borthwicks Halliburtons willows & then went into W Halliburtons for a little while.  Heifer (Thodsen’s) came round, brought out F Schmidts bull to her.  Mowed a little in plantation.  Mrs Randerson & her mother called.  Top & Flossie Randerson went round the block for a ride.  Put the filly in the sledge today & she pulled a bit.

Commenced to mow in front.  Grass very thin.  Mrs Wallace put Norman on train at Orm. for home.  All hands except me at cricket match Norsewood.  Some rain came on this evening.  John put filly in sledge.  Miss Randerson
TH 16   Filly ran away with sledge & marked her legs.  Went to Gowers sale and bought scales & weights table knives chair lantern Paid £1.2.0.
FR 17   Mowing in front.  Better grass today.  Sledged in two loads.  Harold Wills came with a note for Edgar & Leonard   John drove them home to see their father who is getting weaker.  He brought them back again.  Bran broke his chain & went.
SAT 18   Mowing in front.  Sledged in some hay.  A very fine day.  Bran away 2 days.
SUN 19   Walked over to Neals.  Warm day.  John & Cecil found Bran at Anton Andersens. Evening. Drove out.

Finished mowing in front.  Sledged in two loads.  Jens Larsen took the 2 cans of milk to Makatoku Creamery as something went wrong with machinery at Norsewood factory.  John got filly shod.  Hot day Top went for a ride on filly   C J Fredericksen called re sheep buyer.
TU 21   Got in some of the hay in front.  El Cecil & Co. took down small chimney & scraped bricks.  Letter from Nellie Fourneau & 2 cases of plums.  Mowed oak plantation.  Mr Randerson & Flossie came after tea.
WED 22   Put the 5 rams out of reserve yesterday put them on hill.  Sledged in the remainder  of hay from lawn.  El & Co. & Mrs Wallace gone to Village concert.  I stay at home with the 2 little boys.  Mrs Wills came to see them, with Misses Freiberg today.  Got Factory cheque 4.5.10.
TH 23   Frank Hutchinson called to say good bye when going past on his way to the war.  Very rough afternoon.  Wind, rain

A good deal of rain today.  Paid £15.0.0.  cheque today to Mr Beckett.  His bill was £8.  Letter from Wms & Kettle re bale of lambs wool passed in at 3d per lb.
SAT 25   Put all dry sheep off back on to flat & all ewes & lambs in front paddocks on to back.  Found a lamb dead on his back in Ridges.  Got in hay in evening attended Farmers Union meeting.
SUN 26   A note from Mrs Wills yesterday to say Mr Wills was dead.  Today all hands went to the unveiling of memorial stone in memory of John Beck killed in the Transvaal war.  Very fine day.  Cecil & Top out for a ride.  Alf Neal for tea.
MON 27   Finished dagging the 2 tooths.  96 wethers 3 lambs 120 ewes.  Went to the funeral of Rev T J Wills with El & Mrs Wallace & then to Cumming’s & then to Martens Surprise party.  Windy night home at 11.30  Good nights amusement.

TU 28 JAN 1902
Worked about the place, rain in the afternoon.  Sent by post to Neal Bros £1.0.0.  also John took Leonard & Edgar Wills home.
WED 29   Mrs Wallace & Cecil gathered ferns this morning.  Skinned dead ewe on back at edge of bush & brought home dogs meat.  Went with John to Sale at Orm. & bought 27 two tooth wethers at 7/6   Paid Mrs Beale for Gutteridge 18/-   Top at a party tonight for Mrs Cummings.
TH 30   Earmarked 25 two tooth wethers which I bought yesterday & two two tooth ewes & put them on back.  Mrs Wallace & Cecil went home today.  Put all two tooths off front paddock into back & 6 head of cattle.  Paid 12/- to Jens Larsen for use of bull & £13.15.0. to Northern Investment Company.
FR 31   Top rode to Matamau with Flossie Randerson.  Leathered & Greased buggy.  Sawed firewood on flat   a good month.

SAT 1st FEB 1902
Repaired hurdle & fence where cows go into Reserve.  Heifer jumped over hurdle tonight again and broke top rail.  Sawed & split firewood on flat.  Grace Cumming here today.  A very fine hot day.

MON 3   Sawing & splitting matai firewood on flat.  Warm day.  John sledged in some firewood.  El & Top gone to Makotuku
TU 4   Alick Hegh came for John to help him get in his crop of oats.  He paid him 2/6.  He also helped to get in Schmidts oats.  Went to Norsewood paid P G Grant £10.12.6.  Had £3 t o come out of the cheque.  Sent to Robjohns for stout, sent £1.0.0.

WED 5 FEB 1902
Split & sledged in matai firewood.  John cut cocksfoot & went to cricket match in Norsewood.  Went to Vestry meeting in Canon Webbs.  Thorestensen called to see about raising kitchen roof.
TH 6   El & Co. drove to P G Grants & bought some drapery, & fruit at Martins   John went to Gollans for flax & the filly threw him off.  Fine dry weather.  John paid I J Browns bill 13/-
FR 7   Mended fence at top of long plantation   John rode to Makatoku to enquire about 10ft lengths of iron, none at Eriksens or in Norsewood or Orm.  Some at Robinsons.  Took mare & dray & babba to Robinsons & got 6 sheets at 4/5 each also nails etc.  Paid cheque for £3.0.0.  Mrs Oldershaw came.
SAT 8   E Thorestenssen raised the roof of back veranda today.  Put on new roof.  A good days work.  Paid him 9/- got 100 ft timber at A Engelbretsens   Paid him 6/-

Nice cool morning.  Mrs Miss & Grace Cumming came about 11 AM & Miss Randerson.  Afternoon thoroughly wet.  After Tea John drove all to Lutheran Church.  Babba & I stayed at home.
MON 10   A wet day.  Mended mare’s collar.  A rat caught in trap in buggy shed.  G McLeod called to enquire about sheep buyer.  Mrs Callender & Miss D Webb.  Sent letter to Wms & Kettle for 3 drum of Murtons dip & to sell bale of lambs wool at anything over 3d per lb.
TU 11   Worked at lookout fence & sawed a hinau log on back for posts.  Sent a letter to McGillivray sheep buyer.  A rat caught in a dip tin.  Let him go on lawn, John killed him.  Neils Olsen brought a vinegar cask.  T Thorestensen brought pair of brackets which he got yesterday in Danevirk price 6/-  Some more rain this afternoon.

WED 12 FEB 1902
Split some hinau posts on back.  John went to play cricket at Makotuku in the Norsewood 2nd Eleven.  Made 15 runs top score for Norsewood.  Wet evening.  Sports at Takapau.  Sale at Orm. Did not go.
TH 13   Wrote Union Bank for a cheque book.  Beckett’s bill paid today £3.3. Sent him a cheque for £4.0.0.  News of the death of Mrs Gower son.  Split & dragged with mare some hinau posts.  Letter from Wms & Kettle re wool sale my bale of lambs wool passed at 2 ¾
FR 14   Repairing lookout fence.  John laid remainder of posts with mare.  He then picked up & laid in washouse all peasticks & fixed up fence in gully, back – Widerups.  El made wreath & laid it on Mrs Gowers coffin.  Put cows on ridges last night & tonight.  Very hot forenoon & cold this afternoon & some cold showers.

SAT 15 FEB 1902
Worked a little at fence   went with El & Babba to Ms Gowers funeral.  At night all hands went to Lutheran tea meeting.
SUN 16   Walked across to Hans Mortensen’s had dinner there.  John had dinner at Thodsens.  All but me went to see volunteer camp at Amundsens.  Alf Neal for tea.
MON 17   Finished fence. Got up the 3 drums of dip.  Got set of shoes on mare.  Sent letter to Wms & Kettle re bale of lambswool & cheque for dip £3.19.9.  El & Co. went to Mrs Nicholls.  Palle Jensen came with 13lbs plums at 3d per lb.  Flossie & Essie Randerson & Tilly & Mary Thodsen.  Got in a cut of sheep off back and dagged & put on Ridges 65 mixed
TU 18   Mr McGillivray came this morning.  He sent a telegram on friday to Orm to me.  I did not get it.  Put all sheep in yards.  He picked out Ewes 147 at 10/- & 9/- wethers 54 at 11/-  Lambs 34 at 10/6  total 235.

Brindled heifer “Maffie” with Jens Larsen bull.  John got a new paid of boots at Becketts.
WED 19   Drove the sheep to Orm early.  Bengtsen had 57 at his place to drive & truck with mine & McLeod’s 90.  No trucks in the morn.  Left sheep in railway paddock & trucked them in the evening for the 4 o’clock train Bengsten & the droves helping.  Top & Tilly went in train to Danevirk hospital Demonstration, back to Orm in 7 o’clock train.  John playing cricket at Norsewood.
TH 20   Yarded all sheep & dagged 263   Raddled ewes for rams 95 lambs 94 cull ewes, 2 tooth wethers etc 74   Put these on ridges.  Put on flat for tomorrow 324   Sent Bank receipt for £200 to Napier the money to remain at interest.
FR 21   Finished dagging.  Put 101 breeding ewes on Widerups raddled red on heat lambs 231.  total 586.  E Hansen swept 2 chimneys.  Paid him 3/1

SAT 22 FEB 1902
Got Factory cheque for £5.4.10. without the 2 cans of milk set to Makotuku.  Finished picking out ewes & weaning.  Put 2 lincoln rams with 212 ewes.  Put lambs & cull ewes in Reserve.  Put on flat 101 mostly 2 tooth wethers.  Made dam across creek, preparatory to dipping.
SUN 23   At home all day.  El & Co. at church Norsewood school house.  Miss Cumming for tea.  Top stayed at Martins for tea.
MON 24   Preparing yards for dipping & cleaning out dip.  John carried & put in dip 200 gals water.  The bale of lambs wool sold £5.10.9.  Cheque today from Wms & Kettle (3¼)   Surprise party tonight at Gollans.  All hands there.  Home at ¼ to 12.
TU 25   Dipped Bengtsen’s sheep 476 Paid 30/-   Dipped our 106 & put them on back they are chiefly wethers.  El drove Mrs Cummings & Miss Moore to Leon Andersens.  Got Bank Receipt for £200.

WED 26 FEB 1902
Mustered lambs & culls off Reserve and dipped them.  265 & put them on flat.  Dove with John to Orm sale & bought 70 ewes, good ones mostly fat at 8/3 & 48 woolly lambs at 5/-   Will send cheque To W Rose in a few days.  Have them on lawn tonight as it wants eating down.  Poor Top went in train this morning to Fourneau’s.  Got case of fruit from Frances.
TH 27   Earmarked dipped & put on back 48 woolly lambs.  Received cheque £117.4.0 from Longburn Freezing works.  Hot day.
FR 28   Drove three rams to Hans Mortensens & brought back 3 of his & put them with the ewes.  Picked out 42 of the youngest bought ewes to make up the numbers many of them 4 & 6 tooth.  Dipped 28 culls (4 wethers amongst them) & put them on back.  Sent to Union Bank £117.4.0 & £5.10.9.   £50 to be left at interest for year.  Sent receipt to Freezing Works manager

SAT 1st MARCH 1902
Tops Birthday.  Seventeen years today.  Sent away Reserve rent this morning £2.5.  Sent cheque to W Rose Danevirke £40.18.  John up early this morning milking  He went to Onga Onga cricket match.  Wheeled sand from creek into garden for bricklayer.  Killed poor sheep for dogs.
SU 2   All at home except Top.  Dry weather.
MON 3   Dipped the ewes 255 & 5 rams.  Frank Adean sent 2 white pigeons to John.  Letter from Top.  Miss’s Cumming & Moore
TU 4   Did a little work about the place, made some fires on flat & 4 on back.  El called at Mrs Friis.  Mrs Mortensen came on behalf of Wesl Church.  El gave her 2/6
WED 5   Wheeled weeds & rubbish out of front flower garden.  Painted a little on back of the house.  Put 2 weaner calves on back.  Made up fires on flat & some fires on back.  Mrs Thodsen & 3 children   Painter Olsen called about dipping.

TH 6 MARCH 1902
Dipped 220 sheep for Painter Olsen 14/- paid.  G McLeod called.  Making up fires on flat & back, logs burning well.  Letter from Top.
FR 7   Wet day.  It will do good.  Inside today.
SAT 8   Brought big boiler to Blacksmith for repairs, a patch on bottom.  John drove to station to meet Top.  She had Nellie Fourneau & Belle with her as visitors.  Made up fires.  John shifted lambs etc off flat on to back.  Nice feed.
SUN 9   All at home.  Top Belle & John Wesleyan Church.  The 3 calves nearly fit to wean died last night from drinking milk which stood a night in a dip tin altho the tin was in use for some time and was washed out.  Skinned one of the calves a good heifer, a daughter of Lillies.  She was very much swollen.  The other 2 were steers, al good calves.  Magnusen’s boy and Hulena’s boy called this evening about dipping.

MON 10 MARCH 1902
Dipped Magnusens sheep – Paid 7/-  he had 109.  Dipped Hulenas, will pay 24/-.  John got bag of sugar at Robinsons.  Insurance Agent Mr Arnot called and insured John for £200 against accidents or death.  He is to receive £200 with bonuses added after 30 years, he is to be paid as well if he meets with an accident.  I paid him £6.12. That is the yearly amount to pay.  Dragged away to old sawpit in Reserve the 3 calves.  Made up the fires.  Mrs Cumming called.  El took cold shivers this evening, went to bed.
TU 11   Filled & Levelled old sawpit in reserve & covered up the 3 calves.  After dinner G McLeod dipped 119 sheep, is to pay 7/- made up fires & started some fresh ones on far end of flat.
WED 12   Put ewes & rams on flat.  2 ewes blind one dead on ridges.  El & Nellie Fourneau went in train to France’s.  Made fires on back.

TH 13 MARCH 1902
Dipped 50 or 60 sheep for G McLeod.  He paid for all his dipped sheep = 11/-   Dipped 600 for McGreevey.  He is to bring more tomorrow.  He gave me a merino ewe to kill for meat.  I killed it – a good sheep & fat enough.  El & Nellie Fourneau came back from Agincourt in express & here by coach.  At night attended a meeting in Library.  Convened by Mr Raisher to form a horti-Cultural & Industrial Association.  Paid 2/6 a members subscription.  A Committee formed.
FR 14   McGreevey brought the remainder of his sheep, over 900 dipped altogether.  Paid £2.  Nicholaisen sent 118 by Swain Andersen & Benbow.  Will pay 8/-   John rode to Makotuku & passed the Doctor Hall-Frances.  Made up fires.
SAT 15   John went to Papakura with Nellie.  Made fires.  All went to Wesley tea meeting.
SUN 16   Walked over to Neals, had dinner there.  Top & Bell at Presbyterian church, school.

17th MARCH 1902
Setting fire to rubbish heaps & logs on back mostly.  Good burning weather.
TU 18   Burning off.  Chessie would not be caught by Top this morning in the reserve.  She, the mare, knocked her down & kicked at her & nearly kicked her on the face.  John came home from Fourneau’s.  A sack of vegetables sent up from Fourneau’s gone astray.
WED 19   All hands doing the washing.  Top lame.  John playing cricket at Orm.  Went with El to see a play in Top hall.
TH 20   Burning off.  Dragged logs together with mare.  Bill Sinclair got telegram to go home.  T Thorestensen borrowed the filly yesterday to go to Burnside.  J Lane came with the clock.  Paid him £2.2.
FR 21   Put ewes off Flat on to Ridges & Widerups.  Burning on flat ridges & back.  John let his two pidgeons go free today they fly about the place.

SAT 22 MARCH 1902
Made up fires on Ridges.  Came on wet before dinner & rained all the afternoon.  Got Factory cheque today £5.8.8.  Letter from Miss Dora Webb re Testimonial.
SUN 23   Drove up to P G Grants & he walked down with me to O Ericksens & the latter had also had a communication from Miss Webb & he is to send her a testimonial tomorrow.  Miss Randerson for tea.  She Top & John gone to Lutheran Church.
MON 24   Made up some fires on ridges & back.  John drove El & babba up to P.G. Grants they brought back trousers & Mackintosh.  Heavy showers today.  Cows going out of their milk.  Cans not half full.
TU 25   Making up fires.  Wrote Miss Webb.  Nellie El received for mushroom from Lang £2.0.9.
WED 26   El & babba went in 9.30 train to Agincourt.  John got shoe on filly pad 1/-   Made up fires on back.  Wet afternoon.  Sent to Union Bank El’s cheque for £2.0.9.

TH 27 MARCH 1902
Went with mare & dray to Blacksmith & got boiler, chimney bar & paid  £1.12 amount of Collings bill.  Paid £ amount of Road Rates.  Got sack of Rye grasseed at Becketts 4/9 per bushel.  Shook & raked in seed on burnt patches, made up fires on back etc.  Mrs Hulena called & paid £1.4.0 for dipping their sheep & she left us 2 sugar bag-ful’s of potatoes.  Fine day.
FR 28 GOOD   Put logs together in Friday Gully & put fire with them.  Skinned hoggt for dogs.  John playing cricket on hill   Top & I drove up after dinner.  Warm.
SAT 29   Made up fires.  Put 3 posts in Engelbretsens fence.  John saw rabbit in Mortensens.  Attended Com. Meeting Framers.  Paid 4/- for “Dairyman”   Top got letter from mama.  She & babba all right.
SUN 30   Flossie Ran. & Miss Bartlett for tea.  Fine.
MON 31   A good month.  Dragged logs on ridges with mare.  Burning well.  John went to see cricket match.

TU 1 APRIL 1902
Made up fires on back.  After dinner got in sheep off back, run off lambs & put others back.  Kept lambs & some others in yards tonight.  Killed long tail lamb.  Many rabbit scratches in top garden, old & young [?]   Paid Jens Larsen yesterday for cow with bulls 2/6
WED 2   Rain last night & nearly all this day.  Put lambs on flat.  Salted half of the lamb
TH 3   Fine day.  Got a bag of sugar from Becketts.  Cleared burnt ground for seed on Ridges & some on back.  Made some fires.
FR 4   Dagged the lambs in old yards.  Kept 55 of the weakest & most daggy to be dosed with gum in the morning.  They are in the shed tonight.  Only made up 2 or 3 fires on back.  They are mostly burnt out & put out after the rain.  Letter from mother.  Top at Library, meeting of Mutual Improvement society or something of the kind.  Started tonight.  Calm fine day.

SAT 5 APRIL 1902
Shook & raked some grasseed on flat.  Went in coach to Orm – & on to Agincourt.  Met Mr Frances at Victoria.  Rained all the afternoon.
SUN 6   Dull day & calm.  All at home at Agin.  Returned home by 10am train.  Rain.
MON 7   Drove up to Becketts.  Brought home Box of Apples, flowers etc.  Rain tonight.
TU 8   Rain all day long.  Put lambs off lawn into Widerups.  John bought Waterproof oil coat, 14/6 at P.G. Grants.  Letter from Cecil Wallace.  Continuous rain at present.
WED 9   This day turned out to be fine.  Creek down.  Touched up crosscut saw   Dr Hall-Frances called.  Pronounced El all right.  John borrowed 2 rabbit traps at H Mortensens.  He saw 4 hares in paddocks.  Ewe dead up gully, her leg went through little bridge and was broken, her body in gully, the weight of her body pulling on broken leg.

TH 10 APRIL 1902
John went to see T Thorestensen but he had just gone to Takapau.  Mr Beckett got buggy to go to Danevirk & John got his cart to go to Mears’ for 2 little pigs.  paid £1.4.0. got things at Robinsons & ordered spouting.  Put in big boiler in bank.  Boiled sheep in it & garden stuff.  Cleaned out pig stye & put in one pig to fatten.  Day fine one shower.
FR 11   Shook & raked manger grasseed on part of flat & bought rye grasseed on other parts.  Shook some on back.  Came on heavy rain.  Mrs Beckett called to say good bye before going back to Canterbury.  Canon Webb called.  John at a meeting of the Band tonight.
SAT 12   Shaking & raking grasseed.  Cold day.  Went at night to Rev Fostons Social
SUN 13   All at home.  Very cold day.  John Practicing big Cornet.  Got 3 numbers of the “Dairyman” last night, first Number, Jan 20th – 2nd Feb – 3rd March.

MON 14 APRIL 1902
Finished shaking & raking grasseed   Dry day.  Dragged some logs with mare.  One of John’s pigeons missing this morning.  Think a cat killed it.
TU 15   Drove with El to Norsewood.  Paid  £8.0.0 to Mr Beckett, his bill was £6.12.4.  up to Mr Grant & got some things.  John washed buggy & raked in some grasseed.  A traveller from Christchurch called with a spraying pump ordered one the price is £1.12.6.  John gone to Band practice tonight.  He calls at Mr Christophersens with 3 jugs to be left as a wedding present.  Squally.
WED 16   Went to Lutheran church (all hands) to see the marriage of Miss Christophersen & Mr Williams & to breakfast in the Village Hall.  At night Top & John went.  Mr & Mrs Fourneau came by coach to stay a few days.  A very fine day.  Fred Nelson gathering money for Packer to buy leg cork – gave him 3/-

Knocked about the place.  Drove Mr & Mrs Fourneau & El up to near McLeods mill.  home Pettersens road.  Very fine day.
FR 8   Drove visitors & El to Butter Factory & home by German line.  They went home by last train.  Wet afternoon.  John gone tonight to Band Practice.  Light rain.
SAT 19   John rode filly to Agincourt this morning.  I went with buggy to Makotuku saw Milden.  Got spouting 2 bgs flour 1 bg sugar at Robinsons   Paid him cheque £3.2.6.  Got sack chaff at H Mortensens.  Went at night to Farmers meeting.  Paid 2/0 annual subscription, very cold night.  The grass was white this Sunday morning, frost.
SUN 20   All at home.  Top & Babba at church in school.  Miss Hogg & bonnie tea.  El, Top at L church.
MON 21   Poor Babba went to school this morning   also Mid Beckett & Vic Collinge went to old mill for some timber for back verandah.  Some rain fell

MON 21 APRIL 1902
Sent this mornings milk in one can.  Did not milk the cows last night.  Will only milk them for the mornings for the future.  Sent to Mutual L Assn £1.17.10.
TU 22   Shifted ewes off flat on to Widerups & got the weak lambs into yards off ridges & Widerups.  They look much better after a big dose of gum tea & change of paddock.  Made up fires at garden corner.  Set rabbit trap in garden.  Amongst the ewes one blind one.  Paid dog tax Collector 5/- for dogs.  Letter from Miss Webb, Wellington & John.
WED 23   Got factory cheque today £5.0.10.  Rain commenced at 10.30 & heavy rain fell all day.  Dosed the weakest of the lambs with worm specific etc in shed & put on ridges.
TH 24   D. O’Hara came this morning & bought the 2 fat cows for £9.0.0.  His 2 young men came for them & paid cheque.  Skinned very poor 2 tooth.  John came back from Agincourt.  Very fine day.

FR 25 APRIL 1902
Killed pig this afternoon.  At night all hands went to social club meeting.  Home late, 12 o’clock. John took Adela’s horse, wagon & milk to factory.
SAT 26   Cut up & salted pig.  Paid Adela 17/- a payment up to 1st May.  Mrs & Miss Webb called
SUN 27   No milk taken to Factory today.  Flossie here this evening, also Mr & Mrs Raisher and Mr & Mrs Wood from Okaiawa in Taranaki, the latter looking out for a place to buy or lease.  Asked about this place.  Mr & Mrs Beckett & Bonnie & Flossie for tea.  John & Top gone to church.
MON 28   T Thorestensen & Milden Bricklayer came this morning & started work.  At night went to School com. Election.  After election stayed with other guests at Fryer-Raishers.
TU 29   Milden working at chimney, Thorestensen at windows.  Mildens’s man came with materials.
WED 30   Thorestensen finished windows.  At other things.  Mildon headed chimney before heavy rain.  Staying here tonight

Bricklayer Mildon finished midday   Set oven etc.  Paid him £3.18.3.  Thorestensen did not come today.  Attended meeting of Farmers in Lutheran Hall.  Mr Glass spoke,  2 or 3 joined (Fresh ones) wet day & night & cold.  John found Lincoln ram in back sec.  Got him in & sidelang’d him.
FR 2   Thorestensen working mantleshelf for dining room.  John got 2 shoes on mare.  El  varnished dining room ceiling   drove mare & dray to McLeod’s mill for back verandah timber.  Could not bring all, paid 18/3
SAT 3   John went to mill for the remainder of the timber Etc 2/- worth of tongued & groved   dug out the remainder of the potatoes.  Drizzly weather.  El paper hanging.
SUN 4   All at home.  John out with Bertie Engelbretsen.  Brought home pheasant & 3 tuis.  Alf Neal for tea.  £1.2.6. paid to Thorestensen.

Got 15 sheets iron at Robinsons – 3/8 a sheet, a sheet zinc 7/6.  2 Bushs fowl wheat – 9/-  salt etc etc.  Paid cash = £3.14.2.  Got 5 more sacks chaff at H Mortensens.  El finished papering dining room.  John splitting firewood in Reserve.
TU 6   Took the ram away from the ewes.  Thorestensen working at verandah posts & beams.  I put in blocks.  Very fine day.
WED 7   Thorestensen put up wood work of verandah.  Adela did not take milk to Factory this morning.  Sledged in some firewood.
TH 8   A wet day.  Thorestensen roofed verandah.  El paid Beckett’s bill £3.14.2.  Thorestensen working in buggy shed.
FR 9   All hands at Village Hall in evening.
SAT 10   Went with horse & dray to Ormond & got 6 sacks of potatoes, good eating ones.  I Neal for dinner.  Thorestensen finished the meat safe.  Advanced him £3.5.0.

Top & John at Presbyterian church in the school, brought back Mrs Cumming & Grace, for dinner & tea.  Drove them home.
MON 12   A wet forenoon.  John drove Babba to school.  Chimneys smoke, nailed up boards under mantleshelf in dining room to get smoke up chimney.  John at band practice
TU 13   A rough wintry day.  Thorestensen working put lock on door & top on table.  Heavy showers.
WED 14   Babba driven to school.  High wind & rain.  Fierce day.  Cold Thorestensen did not come.  Flossie came with her fiddle.
TH 15   Another rough day.  Thorestensen did not come.  Babba did not go to school.  The first day she missed.  Heavy rain & wind.  John & I tightened clothes line.  Spread potatoes out of sacks in big shed.  Tethered ram got out of hill paddock.  John practising tonight.
FR 16   Thorestensen working.  John took ram home to H Mortensen (3) Spent the evening with El at Becketts.

Killed ram that get through fences another rough day.  Thorestensen did not come to work.  Gave him cheque £1.10.
SUN 18   All at home, windy.  At night Miss Hogg & her brother came & stayed until 10.  Top went to Wes church with Tilly & Mary John & Bertie Engelbretsen at Neals.
MON 19   Pain in teeth last night & some pain today, like neuralgia, used pain killer.  Thoresten soldiered & put up 6 in spout at back veranda.  Showers.  El took Babba to school & bought spouting at Ericksens for front.  Also hung pictures in dining room.
TU 20   Thorestensen put up spouting over front verandah.  John sent parcels to G Frances
WED 21   Nils Nicholaisen paid me 8/- for dipping his sheep.  Thorestensen nailed ends in verandah fixed back window, put weights in bedroom window.  We shifted tank.  Windy day.

TH 22 MAY 1902
Thorestensen finished up today.  Not much rain today.  Thoresten worked 16 days 5 hours at 9/- per day.  Coming to him 17/6.  Mr & Mrs Beckett & baby Mr Hogg & Susy came & stayed for the evening, broke up at 12 AM.  Got Factory cheque today £3.11.11   Not much milk from 4 cows now.
FR 23   Thorestensen finished, paid him up – 17/6   Drove to Orm. was in library, no meeting of Farmers, only 2 Newlings & Bat Brenman.  Came back & up to Library, where Social club members were.  Seven papers on Novel read.  Very cold night, home at 12 AM.
SAT 24   Commenced to snow at 6 AM.  Heavy fall.  Sunshiny day.  Top went to Dannevirk with Peter Alsen to see about taking music lessons for violin.  Cold night.
SUN 25   At Orm church.  Top at home.  In the afternoon went to Mr Becketts with El Eva & John & had tea & stayed until 8 o’clock.  Flossy & Top went to Wesleyan church.

Put Darkie, Maffie & Buttercup out on back.  Went out on back with sledge & brought in 4 dead hoggets.  John went over to Newlings to tell Horace I am to go to Danevirk meeting on Friday night next.  Skinned the hoggs & boiled them with carrots.  W. Hogg here & on back today.
TU 27   Rough day.  I Neal here tonight staying.  He is to bring McGilvray over tomorrow to buy some fat sheep.  Attended Farmer’s Union Meeting at Mr Becketts
WED 28   Mustered sheep on back except 3 weak hoggs.  also left 2 good hoggets behind.  McGilvray & Jem Neal came at dinner time.  Picked out 51 total, 26 wethers at 13/- & 25 ewes at 10/6   Drove them to I Neal’s & put them in his paddock with his fat sheep.  He is to truck them tomorrow.  Paid P.G.G. £5.  At card Party at Becketts until late.  A very fine dry day for handling sheep.

TH 29 MAY 1902
Got in 83 sheep & 45 and crutched about 70 & put them on ridges.  Put all breeding ewes on back.  John sledged in load of firewood.  Went at night with El to Public meeting in Library to arrange about Coronation celebration.
FR 30   Crutching.  Got in more sheep & have the shed nearly full tonight.  Drove to Orm & helped to form a branch of Farmers Union.  El at Coronation meeting
SAT 31   Crutched sheep in shed 236 total.  Sledged in load of firewood from back.  Top gone in Peter Olsens express to Dannvirk for her music lesson.  Attended shareholders (Factory) meeting in Village Hall.  Voting in favour of Creamery on Jensens Sec

Peace Proclaimed at 10.30 AM.  Got in some firewood.  Went with Mr Beckett to Dannevirk to attend Farmers Union Meeting, which was held at Andrews Railway Hotel.  Came home next day by 4 o’clock train.  Poppie & Willie Fourneau came by xpress.  Miss Hogg staying also.  On monday night procession in Dannevirk and Social in Norsewood.  Fine weather
TU 3   Home today by express from Dvirk. 3 o’clock train.  Saw Mary Jun at Orm.
WED 4   John & Willie got in remaining sheep off flat 128 crutched about half remainder in shed & battens.  Put 4 or 5 weak ones in plantation.  John &  Willie got in firewood & put filly & foal out on back.  Cheque from McGillivray £30.0.6.  Letter from Agricultural Department Re Designs for Stockyard.  Silo etc etc

TH 5 JUNE 1902
Finished crutching dry sheep.  Total number crutched 365.  Went to the Christening of Guy Beckett.  Afternoon tea at Parsonage with Mr & Mrs Beckett.  Top Pop & Miss Hogg in the church but did not come in to Canon Webb’s.  Curtis’s baby buried today at Orm Cemetary.  Sent £30.0.6 cheque to Union Bank.  Boys crutched 3.  Coronation Committee forming in Library.
FR 6   Miss Hogg Poppie Willlie & John drove up to the Ranges.  Top rode the filly.  They got home about 3 o’clock.  All hands went to Social in Village Hall at night   Home very late.  White frost every night.
SAT 7   Made a sledge yesterday which was too heavy for mare.  Made a lighter one today, worked about the place.  At home tonight with babba, she has a cold the others just gone to Beckett’s.  A weak hoggt dead in plantation.

SUNDAY 8TH JUNE 1902
At Home.  John Top & visitors at Pres Church.  In the afternoon Miss Tucker came & stayed for tea.  A good singer.  All gone to Wesleyan church except babba & me.  Cows give very little milk.  Sent none yesterday or today, only three times a week now.
MON 9   Sent cheque to Robjohns £1.0.0. for case of stout.  Also a case of empty [?]   Poppie & Willie Fourneau went home by express.  Gave them cheque £2 for the half ton of potatoes which they sent up
TU 10   Found dead hoggt on back.  Sledged him in.  Attended meeting in Lib re Coronation.  Called to see F Martin  Feed mare on carrots & chaff.
WED 11   Sledged in carrots from far garden.  Planted wattle tree on face beyond dip yesterday & fenced it.  Today sent 4 or 5 gallons of milk to Factory.  Fed pigs on scalded pollard & some milk carrots etc   Miss Paisley for dinner.

TH 12   Put crutchings in lower box   Rain 2 or 3 times today.  Tried to saw a Maire log on flat.  Saw not in good order.  Put filly & foal out on back.
FR 13   Constant heavy rain last night and today.  Creek high, over old bridge   A sheepskin buyer from Ekatahuna called   Gave the 4 cows hay in the stalls tonight.
SAT 14   Rain Rain Rain all day and all night – creek very high, slips on Makotuku road & Newlings.  Miss Hogg gone this evening to Becketts   Coach very late, no paper today.  Something wrong with the line.  When in bed at about 11 o’clock heard the bark of a dog on flat, got up and went out with “Spot”.  He tackled a dog which had rounded up a mob of sheep in the corner behind the plantation.  Too dark to see the dog or dogs.

SUN 15 JUNE 1902
Only a very little fine rain today.  All at home.
MON 16   Sawed a little firewood.  Telegram from Insoll Dannevirk to go to Education Board meeting.  Afterwards he sent a telegram to say meeting was postponed.  Did not get 2nd telegram.  Went in xpress to Napier.  Stayed at Terminus Hotel
TU 17   Sent letter to Insoll & Telegram home to say I was coming at 2.15 from Napier.  Bought a butterdish & fruit for Babba.  She was 5 years of age yesterday.  Bought 4 gilt framed pictures for £1.12.0   Got home at seven or half past.  El met me with buggy & we drove to Library where there was a coronation meeting.
WED 18   Sawed a few matai logs with John on flat for firewood.  El Top Miss Hogg & Mrs Beckett drove to Mrs Grants Ormondville & Alice came back with them.  All gone tonight to Library Social.  Babba & I at home. Hard frost.

TH 19 JUNE 1902
We give the mare 2 feeds a day, of carrots & chaff.  The fowl wheat is done.  Dosed 10 scoured lambs which were in the shed last night.  Gave them Koromiko tea & put them in the Reserve with the 2 rams.  Split & sledged in firewood   Alice went home by the last train.  Mr Topholm sen came enquiring for a missing calf.  Mr E Harrison called Representing McDougall Bros. Son, Man, Syd  Agreed with him to use this Dip next time.
FR 20   Sawed & split some matai on flat.  Yarded dry sheep & picked out some weak hoggs. & black lambs for Coronation.  Put dry sheep on back 329 and all Ewes on front paddocks.  34 will be in Reserve tomorrow.  A fine mild day.  All except Top & baba at Discussion in Village Hall re Women in Parliament   Home too late.  Fine moon  light night.

SAT 21 JUNE 1902
Got Factory cheque worth £2.5.8.  Washed some pelts & sheepskins for Coronation   John & his mother went to Golllans for flax & cabbage tree to decorate express for Zealandia.  Poor Top has a stiff neck.
SUN 22   These are the shortest days.  El went to see Mrs Raisher this afternoon.  John gone tonight to Orm to post letter to G Fourneau   Only milked two cows this morning.
MON 23   Drove up to H. Mortensens & got a sack of oats.  Got flat some Turkey red etc at Becketts.  Went with John mare & dray to A Engelbretsens old mill got some fencing pieces & a Flag Pole.  Mr M Tansey called in my absence & left a note.  Top bathes her stiff neck & tonight fumigates in gum leaf tea.  Went with El to last Coronation meeting
TU 24   Up to Norsewood.  Put in pigs with O Ericksen where trees are to be planted at monument.  Sent Telegram to Board of Education.  Sledged in Greenery.

WED 25 JUNE 1902
Got in some green stuff from scrub.  Went with El John mare and Thodsens bush wagonful of greenery and torts cakes etc up on hill.  Carted some boughs out of Mr Watsons yard for bonfire.  Streets beautifully decorated with evergreen arches & flags etc everyone busy.  Every place decorated.  A wire to say coronation postponed.
TH 26   Went with Tableau to Norsewood with a white black & 1/2 cast lambs.  Pieces of wool & sheepskins, ferns etc.  A very good procession.  Top went with Nils Larsen as Zealandie in his express   Got my Tableau Photographed by Maribow   Home at 12.30 a fine clam day.
FR 27   Sent Larsens xpress home, also Thodsens bush wagon.  A dead hoggt.
SAT 28   Gathered up greenery & rubbish & put it away & cleaned up shed.  John gave a goose to C Schmidt.

A letter from Secretary of Education Board to say my telegram was read before the Board.  Top went to Danevirk with Peter Olson & got her music lesson.  Sent cheque of £5 to Beckett & got £2 back.  A dull day & a very wet night & dark.

Sledged in wood & hogg & boiled carrots & 2 hoggts for pigs.  El & babba meant to go to Frances but missed train.  Sent my rabbit rates to Gilbertson 7/4.  Got in all ewes off flat & crutched 14 and nearly filled shed making total 60
WED 2   Snow fell in the morning.  Butchered sheep in shed.  With El at card party Arthur Collins.  Broke up 2 AM or nearly so.  Anniversary of our Marriage.

TH 3 JULY 1902
Got in 57 off Widerups & crutched most of them.  El & Babba gone to Frances’ in midday train.  Paid 6/9 to T Thorestensen.  A very fine day.
FR 4   Got in 56 & crutched nearly all along with those in shed last night.  Put them on flat.  Got in remainder and put 63 in shed & left 31 in shed paddock.  John’s throat sore, stays at home tonight.  I go with Top to Library.  Impromptu speaking etc.
SAT 5   Another white hard frost this morn.  Top gone to Dannevirk for music lesson.  She took £1.1.0 to pay in advance for quarter.  Crutched all Ewes except 9 or 10 now in Reserve with lambs & 2 rams.  Invitation from Becks to the Wedding of their daughter Martha on July 16th   Fine weather.
SUN 6   All at home.  Skinned hogget.  Top went to Lutheran Church with T & M

MON 7 JULY 1902
Yarded all Ewes & pulled out Hoggt etc made the number 256.  Put on back 23 and 329 previously = 352.  Weak lambs on hill 20, rams 2.  Total 620, not enough.  Pigs got out on road.  Got them in and put ring in big pig’s nose.  Letter & 2 photographs from Alice.  A church & Te Aute College.  Top got tin of kerosene & bread & butter at Becketts.  Sent ½ can of milk to factory this morning.  Got only about 2 gal. back.  Gave hay to Lilly Lively & Thodsens heifer.  Not much grass in front paddocks now.  Attended wind up meeting of “Peace Demonstration Committee”.  Beck monument to be finished.
TU 8   Sawed & split some henau posts on flat.  John sledged them home.  Miss Wood called.  Sent Johns insurance money yesterday to Mutual Life Assn £1.17.10   Some rain in the morning, went to P. G. Grants, gave him Torstensens receipt for 12/9.  Signed petition to Council to alter grade of Hill Road.

WED 9 JULY 1902
Made new pig yard to keep big pig separate for fattening.  Let the 3 cows into stock yard plantation for a while.  Christian Friis with his horses wagon & load of firewood fell into creek below road bridge  helped him to extricate his two horses a miraculous escape, no damage done.  With Top at C E Pettersens party 1.30 AM   Every night a hard frost & a fine day.
TH 10   Levelled bank near pig yard and filled up some in sheep yards.  Removed the galvanised iron projecting over buggy shed over far door and sawed the two big titoki uprights.  John oiled harness & washed the buggy.  Mrs Oliver and Mrs Collins came begging on behalf of Wesleyan church, gave them 5/-   Mrs Morgan for English Church £1.  Letter from Babba last night.  Coming home on Saturday.  Helped C A Friis get his waggon out of the creek.

FR 11 JULY 1902
Manured round young fruit trees.  Finished cleaning out drain on lawn.  Carted out on lawn, three loads (small) of stockyard manure for top-dressing.  John at Gymnasium.
SAT 12   This is the Orangemans Day.  A wet day   Top went to Dannevirk.  Nils Olsen came with Telegram to say El & Eva missed the morning train at Victoria.  They came home by last train, 5.20 at Orm.  The luggage was left behind at Victoria.
SUN 13   Hoggt. died on hill.  Went over paddocks Strawberry springing & heavy.  Fine
MON 14   John & Babba drove to Orm. & got the luggage left at Victoria on Saturday.  Got in Buttercup & she had a bull calf just inside Reserve hurdle an hour or so after putting her in there.  Spread the heaps on lawn for top dressing.  John gone to Becks tonight with teapot & 2 small vases as present (marriage)   Rain today.

TU 15 JULY 1902
Some crisp snow on the ground this morning.  Sledged in load of firewood.  Set two rabbit traps in far garden.  I Neal for tea cards etc.  Dug round fruit trees at Stockyards.
WED 16   Repairing old bridge.  A brown dog of Canon Webb’s killed hoggt in Reserve.  At the wedding of Martha Beck & Christiansen in Village Hall with El.  Top went at night.  Fine day.
TH 17   Repaired old bridge, carted manure from stockyard on to lawn.  Mare in stockyard & oak plantation tonight.  Canon Webb when driving past today told us that his dog which killed the hoggt. yesterday is shot.  A very fine day.  El cut down laurel hedge & arch today.
FR 18   Finished carting stockyard manure on to lawn.  Boiled hogget killed by Webbs dog & also carrots for pigs.  Sent a can of milk 3 parts full to Factory   Got very little back.  John & Top at Social.

SAT 19 JULY 1902
Dug out carrots & pitted them.  Sledged in a stringer for bridge & firewood.  A hoggt dead & half eaten by Randerson’s dog in Reserve.  Top went to Danevirk for music lesson, and with John to Wesleyan tea meeting paid H Mortensen 14/- for oats & gave Wesleyan donation 5/-.
SUN 20   El in bed not well.  All at home.
MON 21   Mustered the back & picked out 10 fat sheep for killing for home use.  Attended Coronation meeting in Library.  Sent interest & insurance £15.7 cheque to Julius Sandtmann. (crossed)
TU 22   Found one of the breeding ewes dead on flat yesterday.  Buried it.  Made a fire under boiler before breakfast and killed the pig & scraped it by 10 AM.  D O’Hara called for wool bale.  He paid 2/- & showed us how to kill, scald & scrape a pig etc.  Went with El & babba to Mr Hutchinson’s funeral.  Fine weather .

WED 23 JULY 1902
Pressed the crutchings and sheepskins on top to make a heavy bale.  John took the bale to Orm. with mare and dray.  Sledged in one load firewood   Mrs & Miss Gollan & Mrs Nickolls came in the afternoon & Mrs Thodsen & children.  Went a night with Mr Beckett to Orm to annual parishioners meeting.  only a dozen or so attended.  Home early.
TH 24   Cut up & salted pig.  Spread manure heaps on lawn for top dressing.  El & Top at Mrs Nickolls.  The mare fell down in the buggy nearly opposite O Erickson’s, one of her knees is swollen & the other marked.  Piano tuner came (Dobbs) instead of Mr Herd.  Fine day.
FR 25   Carted away the stuff dug out of drain in front.  Put some gravel in sheep yard alley.  Sledged in a load of maire from back.  Cut the wings of turkeys & some hens in buggy shed.

SAT 26 JULY 1902
Dug round plum trees near back door   John rode to Robinsons for sugar 7/6   Top to Danevirk  for music lesson.  Put bucket top & bricks & mortar on kitchen chimney.  Some showers.  Front paddocks bare
SUN 27   El & Top to school church.  Others at home.  Some feed still on back. Not much hay.
MON 28   Killed a long tail lamb.  Do not know the earmark.  Cannot find the owner.  All at Montgomeries show.
TU 29   Dug out old peach tree which was for years in garden.  planted an apple tree near the same place.  At night went with El to Coronation meeting in Library
WED 30   Another very fine day.  Some rain last night.  Put the 2 rams on hill.  John went to drill at school.  Planted 2 poplars up gully above stockyard.  A Sugden’s sale.
TH 31   Stuck in some poplars up gully.  Gave an order to a traveller for 3 oil paintings.  Drove to Gollans.  A good dry frosty month.

FR 1st AUGUST 1902
Sledged in a ewe that John found cast on Widerups yesterday.  She cannot stand, is weak in hind quarters.  She is slung in shed tonight on a sack.  Planted poplars up gully.  John found hogg dead in a lawyer bush in Reserve.  Sledged it in.  Put boarded border at back verandah under laurels.  El put  in flowers there.  Sent £2.5.6 as ½ years rent for reserve to Lands Office.  John took milk to Factory in buggy today 60 Tbs.  three of four days milk.  Rained commenced this evening and is raining now after a long spell of dry.
SAT 2   Top went to Dannevirk.  A fine day.  Put in a row of poplars along fence in oak plantation.  Trimmed oaks & cut down the 3 big apple trees in garden.  Boiled carrots & hogget for pigs & fowls.  One or two geese laying.  El & Eva on coach when pole broke near Carl Hansen’s

SUN 3 AUGUST 1902
Walked over back, found hoggt caught in lawyers.  Found a good big dry Ewe dead on back, skinned it.  There seems to be plenty of grass on back.  Came on to Widerups & found a ewe with dead lamb and two with singles and one with  twins.  Drove to H Mortensens to enquire about price of C Fredericksen’s 2 tooth wethers.  Hear price is 10/- would only give 9/-.
MON 4   Went over to Widerups with John & babba the latter found 3 ewes with singles one pair with of twins & one ewe with dead lamb.  Got in the latter & put twin lamb on her.  She has no milk, her udder is quite hard but no milk can be got out of it.  Shook grasseed over a few patches.  Found hoggt caught in a lawyer on back.  Rain all day and tonight.  Saw a ewe on ridges with twins & a fresh one on Widerups with a single.  A lot of rain fell today.

TU 5 AUGUST 1902
Rain all last night & nearly all day.  The ewe in shed died last night.  Would have two lambs.  Painted some timber for a gate.  No fresh lambs today.
WED 6   Only 2 or 3 fresh lambs this morning.  Sawed & split some matai in reserve with John for Band Social.  Carl Hansen & John took it up to Hall.  Chopped down some willows to plant on flat.  Attended Banquet at Becketts.
TH 7   Put in a good many willows on flat amongst rushes.  El baking today for Saturday nights Band Social.
FR 8   Showers today.  John found a ewe on her back in Widerups.  Painted some battens for gate.  John took our milk cans to Factory this morning.  Adela is in Napier Gaol awaiting her trial for infanticide or murder.  Dragged some logs together at garden corner.  El baking for Band Social. Rain tonight.

SAT 9 AUGUST 1902
Got in a two tooth ewe with dead lamb and put the skin of the dead lamb on a pet lamb & she took to it.  Dragged some logs together in flat garden corner with mare.  Found dead hoggt on back near Magnusens.  All hands at Band Social, had to take the chair.  John playing in Band.
SUN 10   Cold miserable day.  Snow & sleet hard on stock 5 or 6 lambs last night  Front paddocks bare.  Not much hay.
MON 11   Several fresh lambs.  Carl Olsen took milk to Factory today.  John found a ewe cast on flat, a lamb with her.  He sledged in a dead hoggt & boiled it with garden stuff for pigs & hens.  Fenced for a single tree on slope.  Took bucket off top of chimney and swept it. (kitchen).  A very fine day.
TU 12   John took bundle of skins to Station for W & K   Sledged in ewe cast on flat & put her with her lamb in sheep yards, also a ewe which had a dead lamb.  Planted a tree on slope.  A very fine day for lambing.

WED 13 AUGUST 1902
Carl Olsen took the milk to Factory today and also on last Monday.  Killed weak hoggt in Reserve.  Miss Hansen & Coonie Fryer-Raisher came for flowers for Coronation Ball in Village Hall.  Camelies from Mr Frances by post for El John & Top who go to the ball tonight.  I stay at home with Babba, letter from Nellie Fourneau.  John drilling at School and decorating Hall for Corn Ball.  El Top & John at the Ball in Village Hall.  I wrote letter to Thomas Perry Clarat Belmont.
TH 14   Through Ewes, lambs coming freely.  One ewe cast,  had to take big dead lamb away, another had a dead lamb also.  Jim Neal for dinner.  He got young wattles in garden to plant at his place.  Fine day.
FR 15   A great many lambs came last night, John got a ewe in which could not lamb took it away alive.  Another we had to put the bearing back.  A dead hoggt on back

SAT 16 AUGUST 1902
A great deal of rain fell last night and today, not good weather for lambing, found hoggt on back caught in lawyers this is the 5 or 6th near the same place.  Cut and brought home a piece of titoki for malls.  Ewe on flat with dead lamb & one also on Wideeups.  Planted pinus tree on side of hill between dip & creek, Top went to Danevirk.
SUN 17   Found a good two tooth took ewe dead near B[?] fence.  Could not lamb, the lamb would come out the wrong way.  Got in the ewe with the dead lamb on flat.  Put twin on her & put the skin of her own lamb on her.  A showery sort of day.  Rain, Rain, too much
MON 18   Sawed some matai with John for firewood.  Another soft day with light rain now & then.  Babba at a birthday party, that of Middleton Beckett.
TU 19   Blasted & split some matai for firewood   Got in 2 ewes without lambs & put twins on them  Mrs & two Miss Thodsens at night.

WED 20 AUGUST 1902
Not many lambs coming now, the rush over.  Fine weather.  A rabbit caught in trap in my garden, earmarked.  Dug round some gooseberry bushes in garden & manured them.  John boiled turnips & meat in boiler after coming home from school drill.  News came yesterday of the death of Mr Jones Headmaster in Waipawa school.  Fine day.
TH 21   Dug round & manured gooseberry bushes   El shifting her flowers yesterday & today   old Mr Friis called.  Mrs Randerson in the evening.  Only one or two lambs last night.  Made a fire on totara track & saw cow Darkie, she won’t calve until the end of the month or beginning of Sep.  John at Bank practice tonight.  His mother got a suit of clothes for him today at P.G. Grants
FR 22   Worked in garden digging all day.  Got factory cheque 13/11 & Bonus 1.11.11   John commenced cutting lawyers & scrub at back.  El & Top Cummings

Dug & put in seeds in garden.  Beans peas carrots parsnips, shook some mixed seeds along by gooseberry bushes.  Put in 4 seed potatoes.  Top had a nice day to go to Danevirk.  John falling scrub.  El digging   At night went to Farmers Union meeting   All members present gave 1/- towards a fund for the organising Sec. Mr Glass.  Got cheque from Wms & Kettle £5.4.9 nett proceeds for crutchings & 21 skins.
SUN 24   Fine day.  Alf Neal for tea.
MON 25   John sledged in 2 loads of matai.  Walked over back, found a dead hogget.  Skinned a dead ewe on Widerups, also lamb dead, buried both.  Put in a row of turnip seed in garden.  Steady rain in the afternoon.  Steady & constant tonight.
TU 26   Ewe (small 2 tooth) cast on ridges.  Took away dead lamb.  Sledged her in took away another dead one.  El Top John at Social on hill – returned troopers.

Found 2 dead lambs in holes in gully in ridges, filled the place up with dead timber & earth.  Sledged tools to back to split rails.  Apples & camelies from Agincourt.  Showers appearance of good spring.  Grass on back secn.
WED 27   Sawed log on back for rails, showers.  Got in ewe with a good single lamb not able to stand, killed lamb, knees swollen joints festered, put skin on pet.  Ewe took.  Miss Pettersen Mrs Grant came & left Ella.  El paid Hansens bill £1.17.1.  John drilling.
TH 28   Put cows on back, as there is more grass there.  Brought “Lilly” & “Buttercup” home at night & left “Wildy” & “Lively” there.  Sawed & split some rails on back, cold weather & showers.  Caught a large hare in garden trap.
FR 29   John fell some scrub.  Split rails.  Ella here tonight.  Killed sheep. J T & El at Ping Pong.
SAT 30   Working on back.  The 2 cows & mare there tonight.
SUN 31   Mrs & 2 Miss Cummings & Mr Garry here for the afternoon.  Mrs Grace for dinner.  John drove them home at 9.30

Split 17 totara posts, heavy, out of a knotty log at Clemetts crossing.  Sledged in some rails   Sawed a log for rails.  John did some scrubbing.  El in bed with influenza.  John got a bottle of sherry in McLeods hotel, paid 5/6.  Little or no growth in this weather.  Paddocks in front pretty bare.  Grass on back Sec   Very few lambs coming now, rush over.
TU 2   Sawed & split some rails at Clemetts gully.  Made some fires there too.  John raked up & burnt off some chips.  When going for cows in the evening found a dead hoggt on back.  Hay all done now, must put cows on back sec, not much grass in Reserve.  No fresh lambs today.  A very fine day.  A letter from George.  He is in Shannon
WED 3   Castrated & ear marked calf.  Made fires on back.  John got 12 Tbs pollard at Becketts yesterday.  El & Co drove to Friberg.  Very fine day.  Fenced pine tree near dip (& planted it)

TH 4 SEPT 1901
Sledged all boughs to wool-loading hole.  John went to H Mortensen’s for the three rams.  One of them was found cast & dead.  He brought the other 2 home.  Dug oak tree out of slope plantation & put it in garden   Put some rape stalks in trench in garden   John got in the 2 cows from back Secn  milked & put back before breakfast.  No hay now.  Very fine day.  Salted fore quarter of mutton.  Put bell on “Lilly” yesterday.  El & Co drove to township with cheque £3.15.  Left 15/- for Dr Hall-Francis.  Bought 8/- worth of seed potatoes, 2/- worth of each sort.  “Early rose”, “Up to date” “Fluke kidney” and another sort.  The brought back Ella
FR 5   Killed old ram & boiled same with mangels for pigs etc.  Put in 2 rows of Fluke potatoes in garden, cut seed, the 2 top rows, some manure from under woolshed.  El & Co at Oldershaw’s   Very fine day.  No lambs coming now.

SAT 6 SEPT 1902
Sawed log & split some rails at back.
SUN 7   John at Nicholaisens all day.  Walked across back sec with the 2 dogs.  Saw and chased a black & tan dog and found 3 hoggets killed near the back dam do not know the dog or where he went to.  Walked to Hegh’s Schmidts & Mulhollands, not theirs.  Messrs Hogg & Beckett here for the evening and for tea.  Cloudy.
MON 8   A rough day.  Went to where the sheep were killed, with sledge.  Another good sheep found with broken leg and badly bitten on both hind legs.  Cut its throat & sleddged the four home.  The cow “Darkie” calved this afternoon in scrub.  A big bull calf.  Went to Horticultural meeting in Library & was in Mr Watsons house for a while.  Rode Chessie.  Home at 10 o’clock
TU 9   Skinned the 4 sheep & boiled them.  John sledged in firewood.  We then went to back with sledge & tools for

splitting posts.  Sawed totara log for posts and made fires near where the sheep were worried, also the two dogs are tied up there tonight.  Flossie for tea.  El & John gone to entertainment in Village Hall.  Calm moonlight night.
WED 10   White frost this morning.  Got in ewes & lambs off Widerups, found one young lamb dead.  Docked 43 ewe lambs & 40 w lambs, one ewe to lamb, we put in Reserve & one fat dry ewe with her.  Total 90 ewes   Made fires on back & tied up “Spot” there.  Members of chess Club here tonight.
TH 11   Mustered Ridges & docked 30 wethers & 33 ewe lambs besides 1 long tail and 63 ewes.  Came on very wet as we put them in the yards, so we put all of them in the wool-shed & docked on a box at the back door.  Made fires and left Spot tied up at “Slaughter Slip”.

FR 12 SEPT 1902
Got in Reserve & docked 3 E   3 W lambs & put them & their mothers & 18 hoggets with ewes & lambs for the back.  In Reserve now 1 ewe & lamb a couple of ewes to lamb & some for killing.  Found 2 dead hogg in reserve

SAT 13   Mustered back & put them on Flat.  Put ewes & lambs on back.  We put the 3 cows on back every day made up fires on back.  Drizzly wet day.

SUN 14 SEPT 1902
All at home.  Fine evening.  Mr Garry for tea
MON 15   John & Babba went on flat with mare & sledge for firewood & found 2 dogs worrying the sheep.  Two sheep (Hoggets) badly bitten, cut their throats.  One ewe with a lamb stuck in Reserve creek bitten, dragged her out.  Two others in Reserve lame.  Three or four on flat lame.  Followed the dogs home to Becks & Oly Gundersens.  Took away the two dogs & brought Gundersen to see the damage & in the evening took Beck to see the worried sheep.  The latter gave me a written & stamped agreement to pay £2 damages & shoot the dog or else send him 75 miles away.  “Bran” got off the chain & John rode to Mortensen’s & Andersen’s after him.  He came home.  Wms & Kettle sent me 14/9 proceeds of 11 skins.  Found ewe dead on back near Gundersens, a lamb with her.

TU 16 SEPT 1902
Found 3 dead sheep in gully on flat.  Sledged them home, one a ewe with twins inside.  Put 3 ewes with 3 lambs off ridges into shed paddock one of the ewes in front with her lamb she is bitten on hind leg.  John took Bran to Becks.  Showers and hail all day.  Got registered letter & £2.0.0. from Mr Beck.  Flossie Eddie & Miss Davis here for the evening.  Rough day
WED 17   Sent letters to O Gundersen & Beck to come & see the amount of damage done by dogs & also to appoint a valuer with one from me to value sheep.  Bek & Gundersen came across & we arranged matters.  Both dogs killed & they pay damages of £2 each man.  Killed a fat ewe yesterday & Ell took a quarter 12lb to Mrs Cumming  it was 16lb but 4lb deducted for fat.  El Top & John at Band Social.  Sledged in 4 more woolly sheep, one a four tooth wether.

TH 18 SEPT 1902
Filled boiler with sheep to feed hens, pigs etc.  Carl Olsen took home a sackful of meat for his pigs.  Burried the remainder & also Gundersens bitch.  Made fires on back & found a hogget cast & one of the bought hogg dead.  At night went to Mr Watsons house Re “Breach of promise case”.  Fine night.
FR 19   Planted a pinus insignus tree on slope in shed paddock.  Mustered the flat & dagged & put on Ridges 309.  Two bitten sheep & 3 ewes in lamb & a few weak ones I put in front = 10   In Reserve 2 ewes with lambs & others.  Sheep dotted with ticks, must dip next week   El sent 2 hens to Mrs Scott.  John got tooth pulled by Dr Gradman.  Fine day.
SAT 20   A very rough day symptoms of snow.  Made up fires on back.  Got in ewe & big dead lamb.  Put skin on motherless one.  John took “Buttercup” to P Olsens bull.

SUN 21 SEPT 1902
All at home.  A very rough day.
MON 22   Alick Hegh got ¼ mutton paid 3/6 got dogs meat, fat etc.  Took John away to cut chaff at Nordbyes shed   Ole Gundersen came & paid £1.10.0 for loss of sheep by dog worrying, is to pay remainder in a month hence = 10/-.  Skinned a hogget that died on lawn.  A ewe in front had twins in plantation and a ewe yesterday had a single in the same place.  A fearful rough day.  High winds, hail & cold showers no hay for the 3 cows.  Mare in plantation.
TU 23   Very rough weather.  Snow today, enough to cover the ground.  Inside at the fire all day.  Snow disappeared in the evening.  No growth.  Very little grass in the front paddocks.  Rough weather everywhere.
WED 24   Went out on back to finish sawing totara log.  John sawing too quick the saw snapped & broke off.  Got in bit of firewood.

Yesterday got in filly & foal from back.  Filly quiet.  John caught & rode her in yard.  Today he & Top went for a ride.  Windy rough weather.  Drove stakes round elm trees in pig paddock.  Trees barked all round by pigs
TH 25   Got in 2 sledge loads of firewood off flat.  Went to Nordbyes Sale with filly.  Very cold afternoon, hail & rain.  Cows fetched a high price, from £6 up to £10 or more.  The filly was knocked down for £8.5.  It is snowing tonight, 3 inches on ground now.  Went with El to Wesleyan social last night.
FR 26   Three or 4 inches of snow on ground blue sky.  Snow melted & gone by midday.  Insurance canvasser for AMP came.  I Neal came in evening.  Paid him £1.  Killed a good fat ewe.  All except Babba in Hall to hear “Breach of Promise” case.  A fine afternoon & night.  I took the part of “Constable Murphy”.  Home after 11 PM   Factory cheque £1.1.8.  Receid 13/5

SAT 27 SEPT 1902
John went to Becketts on milk cart & got a bag No. 1 sugar etc.  We went to back & shook & raked grasseed on burnt patches.  Found a ewe cast, alive, & found one dead on Gundersens end.  Helped Friis’ boys get home young calf which was stuck in the mud in a gully.  John took hind ½ mutton to A Hegh & got paid 3/6.  El took another to Mrs Cumming & was paid 10/- the amount due to date.  She bought fender at Ericksens for 23/6 & a tin lollies at Mr Becketts, a hearth rung at P.G. Grants.  A showery cold miserable day & night.  John gone to top hall to attend Band Social
SUN 28   Put mare & foal on back section.  Walked over to Mortensens sec.  He, Freddy & P Magnusen trying to get a young rabbit from under a log, lost it.  Dogs chased another rabbit from beyond Mortensens clump of bush, lost it too.  Got in ewe & crippled lamb.  Mr Garry C[?]

MON 29 SEPT 1901
Found the motherless lamb on back & put the skin of the crippled one on him, ewe took to it at once, both in front.  This has bee the 1st fine good growing day for weeks past.  John split firewood on flat & I sledged it in.  Shifted all dry sheep off Widerups & Ridges on to Flat.  Fairly good & clean feed on flat having 9 days spell.
TU 30   Sledged tools out to “Rata Knob” & lit 3 fires out that way.  John ½ or less day with Alec Hegh planting potatoes, got paid 1/-.  Sawed remainder of totara log.  Skinned hoggt on Flat.  John sawed some henau for posts got a dozen boomers for O’Hara’s fence.  We knock off at half past four to come home and milk, get in firewood, feed calves & pig etc.  This has been another fine day.  Today ends the month, which on the whole has been an exceedingly rough one.  A late spring – the latest I have seen in N.Z.

WED 1st OCTOBER 1902
Split some totara posts on Rata Hill & made up fires.  Found hoggt cast on Neals track.  John sawed henau near McGreeveys fence for posts.  Light steady rain in the afternoon.  El John & Top at Hall to see Comic Company.
TH 2   A great deal of rain fell last night.  This has been a wet day.  We picked over some dead wool in shed & shook a little rye grasseed on back where fires have been.  Grass only now giving symptoms of growth.  Ridges & Widerups very bare.  Flat not so bad.  Fair picking on back Section.
FR 3   Worked on back.  John split henau posts near McGreeveys fence.  Lively had heifer calf on back.  Got home.  29 years in N.Z. today.  A different sort of spring in N.Z. 29 years ago.  The spring is a month late this year.  Grass only giving symptoms of growth now.  All hands went to gymnastic entertainment in Hall.  A good exhibition.

Repaired fence at McGreeveys & put in a few posts in F Scmidts fence.  John laid the posts with mare & helped at fence.  Mrs Garry & her little girl and Mr Garry called, also Alf Neal for tea and evening.  Got letter from W Rose & cheque for £7.17.0   Top went to Danevirk.  Windy day, no rain.
SUN 5   Eight sheep on road.  John put them in Reserve.  Earmark like that of CC Smith   John walked across to let him know.  We meant to go see Mrs Cumming today, turned out too wet.
MON 4   A very fine day.  Put in some posts in back fences.  Mr Golllan came & took his 8 hoggets away.  Killed a fat sheep.  El paid Mr Becketts bill of £3.17.0.  Got 2 fore shoes on mare.  Shirts etc at P.G. Grants
TU 7   Put in some posts in O’Hara – Back fence.  John dragged totara & henau posts to fence with mare.  “Star” had heifer calf at midday.  Mrs F Redward for lunch.  El bought book from her

FR 10   Working at fence at slip Widerups – back.  Put in 3 totara posts & leveled bank, finished there & shifted on to three gateways & put in a few posts.  H Hall & Mr Billows called with paintings Photographs etc & El gave them an order for an oil painting of her mother & photographs of John & Top.  They stayed here for tea & accompanied us to Social meeting & stayed the night.  Fine day & fine night.

Mr Billows & H Hall took Photographs of House etc   El & Top missed Peter Olsens express & came back home from Becketts.  El went to Orm with B & H in their gig & Top in coach & took the train to Dannevirk, Top too late for music lesson, came back with Peter & El came back with Mr Leonard Andersen, bought minnow for John to go fishing.  Letters from Mrs McNutt & Kate Watkins.  Attended Farmers U. Meeting.  Put in a few posts in fence Ridges – Back.
SUN 12   Light rain most of the day.  John found dead ewe on back. & hogget cast.  He went over to C.C. Smiths & borrowed his fishing tackle.
MON 13   Put in some posts in fence Ridge – Flat   El & Co drove to Mrs Leon Andersen   John got fishing licence 5/- at Ormond   Went fishing near Gollans, got a trout.
TU 14   Went over back & got in Strawberry & Wildy, both springing, a very fine day.  Put in a row of potatoes in garden, did some to fence, back – Ridges

WED 15   John sawed totara log in ridges near pond, for posts, then went to drill.  Mr Garry came back with him & stayed the evening.  A very fine day.  Dug a bit.
TH 16   Split some totara posts in ridges.  John took C C Smith’s rod home to him & caught 3 trout.  Got in sheep off Reserve & killed one.  Came on heavy rain, thunder & lightning
FR 17   Put in a few posts in fence Ridges – Back.  Strawberry calved this afternoon a big bull calf, Darkie round John took her to P. Olsens bull.
SAT 18   A wet day.  El drove to Mrs Cummings took with her fore ¼ mutton.  John took hind ¼ to A Hegh 17 lbs.  A wet miserable night.
SUN 19   A fall of snow this morning.  John at C C Smiths.  Bought his fishing rod etc for 17/6  Snow disappeared at midday.

MON 20 OCT 1902
Walked up to Norsewood.  Got a pair of mallrings at J Collings.  A dead ewe on back.  John split firewood & then went to Mr Thompsons for Mr T Cross’s letter & credentials for me to attend Farmers Meeting in Hastings on the 22nd   Got in dry sheep off flat & picked out 10 fat ewes for D O”Hara at 13/- each.  Turned back on flat 289 & 1 at yds = 290   Sent milk to Factory in 2 cans today.
TU 21   Off in the morning train to Hastings.  Was met at railway station by Willie Fourneau & drove to Papakura.  A fine day.
WED 22   Went with El Mr & Mrs Fourneau to the 1st days show.  Not much rain.  Stayed at D O’Reilly’s Hotel.  Some rain fell.  Went as Norsewood Delegate to Farmers Union Meeting held at the Carlton Hotel.  Mr Cross chairing.
TH 23   All the Fourneaus & El at show met them in the forenoon.  A good show & fine day.

FR 24 OCT 1902
Mr Fourneau ploughed some in the morning.  I ploughed two rounds.  We two & Mrs & Mr Fourneau drove in to Napier   El bought hanging lamp at Williams ironmongers for £1.  also a dutch hoe etc.  home at 6 AM.  All went at night to see the Fulford family.  A very warm day.
SAT 25   Willie & Mrs Fourneau drove us to Hastings railway station.  We brought away tomato plants, cabbage plants etc.  A fine day when we started.  Rain at Ormondville & much rain all evening & all night.  Got sheep skin cheque £2.0.11   Factory cheque before deducting 1.5.6   Cream & butter 8/-.  Wildy has a bull calf today in Reserve.  Got them in & got heifer in bale with a rope.  When in Napier went to Woollen Factory & was showed all over it.  It was in full work & seemed to be turning out good material.

SUN 26 OCT 1902
A very fine day.  Walked over back Spot chased a rabbit into a stump. CC Smith Ada & 2 children came in the evening, also Messrs J Colling, Beckett & Garrie.
MON 27   John cut down scrub up to dinner time & then went to practice Cricket   I put in a few posts and put poisoned pollard & toxa in stump where rabbit was run into yesterday.  A Hegh paid John 7/- for meat today.  Heifer “Wildy” does not give much milk as yet.  Fine day.
TU 28   Put wild heifer & her calf on back.  She is not easy to milk.  Sledged a few posts with mare.  Mr Hall & Mrs Billows came with oil painting of El’s mother & Gertie’s & Johns Photos in frame.  Photo of house etc.  John went to Drill & got D O’Haras cheque for £6.10.0.  Messrs Hall & Billows left after tea.  Sent John’s insurance to Gibson.

WED 29 OCT 1902
Sent letter to Wms & Kettle for 14 w bales.  Dragged in from back with mare maire stringer for bridge, also some slabs from back.  John cut down some scrub & after dinner went cricketing   We docked 8 lambs off reserve and killed a fat ewe.  Tailor Engelbretsen delivered suit.  Paid £1.13.  Ole Gundersen paid for damage (10/-) done to sheep by dogs.  Very fine day.
TH 30   John has a pain in his side today and cannot work.  I dug some in garden & put in some potatoes.  Messrs Billows & Hall here today & tonight & Flossie.  El took ¼ mutton to Mrs Cumming & John took fore ¼ to A Hegh 16lbs
FR 31   Dug a bit in garden & pulled wool off a dead sheep.  Artists in Danevirk tonight.  Recd the woolpacks.  Fine day.  Plenty of grass everywhere.  Sheep look daggy. The 3 rams in shed tonight.

MON 3   Put in a few posts in fence, back – Ridges.  Got in 70 sheep off Ridges & dagged them.  John went with Messrs Billows & Hall to township and had joined in with members of Gymnastic Club to have their Photos taken.  Mrs Billows came with the men today.  All gone to Danevirk tonight.

Continued NOV 1902
Poor babba sick today.  Her mother went to Norsewood for fruit etc for her, as she will not eat.  This afternoon she has eaten a banana and some other trifles.  She is better.  Mr H Hall nurses her.
SAT 8   Shore 14 reserve sheep, 3 of them fat the others with lambs, 1 hogget.  John went with Mr Hall’s mare and gig to Orm. to meet Kate Watkins & boy Bennie.  Blowing very hard.  Eva better today.  Can eat & exercise.
SUN 9   At home.  Mr & Mrs Beckett came.
MON 10   Blowing very hard.  A wattle tree blown into garden over fence.  All hands went to see Cricket match in Norsewood.  Onga Onga defeated.  All went to Concert at night. Nigger Minstrels  Mr Harry Hall gave several comic songs.  Gave the Club a donation of 10/- very high wind all night.  Came home at 10 o’clock.  Kate Bennie & John.  Top & El [?]

WED 12   Went to Norsewood.  Co Co election  O Ericksen.  D H Grant.  Heavy showers   At night took the chair at the meeting of Mr Taylor Candidate for Parliament.  A good many in Hall, Windy.

Shore 53 & put with 193 on flat 246 besides Reserve sheep = 151[?] about.  Kate & Bennie went to Napier today Gerty went to Danevirk.  Some rain.  A surprise party came here last night.
SUN 16   All at home.  Walked over back found “Daisy” cast.  Shore her and got her home, but she died.  Good rain. Amongst those shorn yesterday 7 4 tooths.
MON 17   A wet day.  Pressed 2 bales. (62)   In No 1 bale put in fleeces = 66   In No 2 bale fleeces = 72   John fishing in the afternoon, none.  Claude came with bag flour, sugar & Flossie.  Found remains of hoggt in a lawyer bush in Reserve.
TU 18   John borrowed Mr Becketts buggy mare & drove Eva & her mother to railway station, then went thro ewes & lambs   Got in & dagged remainder dry sheep 47   Put in some carrot seed in Yew [?] garden.

WED 19 NOV 1902
Put in the cabbage plants which we got by post yesterday, from Alice we suppose.  Put in carrot seed at yew tree   John put Bee ointment on Buttercups teats, as they are sore.  He caught one fish this afternoon in Manawatu river.
TH 20   A fine day.  Put in carrots & beet in yew garden.  Got in the sheep off Ridges at 3 o’clock & left them in yards, in shed tonight.  John did a little scrub cutting & went thro ewes & lambs.  Messrs Billows & Hall, tea   Put ring in one of the pigs nose’s.  Castrated 2 calves, 3 on hill now & two in gully plantation.  Hoed up row of potatoes in garden   John took down wire netting in front of house.  We put it up from road gate to middle gate to keep hens from going in front of house.  47 sheep – the last of the dry– in shed.

Shore 47 today.  Four tooth w   2    62   The last of the dry sheep.  Put them on ridges.  John helped to shear today, went fishing in the evening.  Messrs Hall & Billows for tea.  Ted Thorestensen called about getting firewood out of Reserve, can take as much as he wants.  A frost last night.  Potatoes in garden blackened.  John hung small gate going into yew garden  Shorn dry sheep on Ridges tonight = 293
SAT 22   Light rain nearly all day.  Received Factory cheque today £2.9.1 after deducting shares 4/- & butter 9/-   Top went to Danevirk.  Mustered back & put them (ewes & lambs) on flat & put the shorn sheep, 293 on back.  John got home this morning at 5 AM   Stayed at Neals last night after fishing   Caught none.  Walked up to Mr Becketts

Got in a cut of ewes & lambs & dagged 25 when it came on to rain.  Put them back on flat except 22 ewes and 3 hoggets which we shore.  Heavy rain all the evening.   El came home by last coach.  A bad night for shorn ewes.
TU 25   Put in some cabbages plants got from Agincourt.  General Election today.  Went up to school house & voted for Taylor.  He was defeated by Hall by 1500 votes.  All hands at Wesleyan Social in Hall.  Left for home at 11 o’clock.  Fine night.
WED 26   Top went by 12 o’clock train for Agincourt.  John borrowed Mr Becketts mar [?] & El drove her to station.  Got in some ewes & lambs & dagged & put on Ridges.  120 ewes & shorn ewes done on Monday 25.  3 hog   Lambs turned out with them  137.  A very windy afternoon.  An insurance agent, Mr Manly called today.

TH 27 NOV 1902
Got in ewes & lambs off Flat & started to dag.  Came on wet & rough rushed in and shore ewes = 41 amongst them 3 or 4 hoggs.  Messrs Billows & Hall came today & stayed the night.
FR 28   Pressed one bale No. 3 = Fleeces 70  Pressed bale No 4 = 64   Ewes & hoggs fleeces mixed  Got in ewes & lambs, dagged 32 & put them in shed tonight.  Put 41 woolly ones back on Flat not dagged as rain came on.  Got in Maffie from back, with her calf 2 or 3 days old, milked her, easy to milk and quiet.  John & I dragged her into the bale with a rope.  A heifer calf.
SAT 29   Very rough morning.  Shore ewes 32.  Mare very heavy.  Keep her in shed paddock
SUN 30   Paid Carl Olsen for milk carrying 14/-   All at home.  Maffy must be dragged into bale.  42 ewes in shed tonight  88 lambs on flat.

MON 1st DECEMBER 1902
Shore the 42 in shed last night.  Got in & put in shed off ridges 24.  Nils Larsen took the 2 cans to factory this morning.  Messrs Hall & Billows – tea.  Chessy came in off flat with foal this morning, filly foal.  No rain today.
TU 2   Shore the 24 ewes in shed last night   Pressed 2 bales today 1 x bred fine 60 fleeces.  1 x bred No 5 = 58 fleeces.  A shower of hail & rain this morning
WED 3   Rough showery day.  The foal got into hole in the bank of the creek in the Reserve, and was not able to stand for some time after we pulled him out.  Off hind leg swollen put mare & foal in sheep yard for a few hours and drove mare in buggy to Orm. to meet Eva & Top coming from Agincourt.  John & Claude hooked a good size trout in far creek & shot a hare in back Section.

TH 4 DEC 1902
Hoed up potatoes & took weeds etc out of turnips.  Got in sheep & took out 61 woolly ones & shore 21 of them.  40 of them in shed tonight.  Mr Skinner has raised the price of bread to 8d per loaf.  Fine today.
FR 5   Got in all ewes & lambs off ridges before breakfast as it looked like rain.  Pulled out all the woolly ewes & crammed them into shed along with the 40 in shed last night.  Did 64 today & left 15 dry sheep in shed tonight.  Put ewes & lambs on Widerups   Some light showers today.  Dull day.
SAT 6   Shore the fat sheep in shed = 15 the last of them.  Pressed No 6 bale 60 Fleeces also No 7 bale = 61 fleeces No 8 = 60 fine No 9 = 62 fleeces fine.  Top went to Danevirk.  Number shorn in Ewe flock = 264 besides Reserve sheep 15 ewe 13 lambs  Total ewe flock hogts included 279  Many ewes died this season.

SUN 7 DEC 1902
All at home.  No one came today.
MON 8   Alick Hegh took 10 bales of wool to Railway station.  Two fours & two bales last trip.  Chessie in the lead.  Pressed 1 bale of pieces bellies & dead on top.  No 10.  Shore Reserve lambs = 13.  Got in sheep off flat & picked 88 lambs out, one of them 2 or 3 weeks old.  Docked it.  Shore about a dozen   Messrs Billows & Hall lunch & tea.  Sent letter to Williams & Kettle.
TU 9   Shearing lambs did the 88 in shed John helped.  He got in picked 94 lambs off Widerups.  He & Top started for Ormondville in buggy to see Canon Webb, but meeting the Canon on the road turned back.  El gave Mr Skinner over half a sack of potatoes.  She got a pane of glass for casement & Mr Billows put it in.  She & Top walked to Mrs Cumming.

WED 10 DEC 1902
Shore the lambs in shed last night = 94   John helping.  Top drove down & saw Canon Webb.  In the evening John El Eva & Top got in & picked out all the lambs.  47 they are in shed tonight, the last.  Castrated 5 or 6 today, left 2 unshorn for Killing at Christmas.  Young Mr Rose from Danevirk called to see if I had any stock to enter at Ormondville next week.  He gives a booming account of all kinds of stock and the high prices they are realising.  Messrs Billows & Hall John El & Top all gone to Childrens Concert (school) tonight.  No frost this morning, but yesterday morn the grass was white.  Potatoes uninjured.  Yesterday & today warm shearing days.
TH 11   Finished shearing the lambs at 11 AM.  Took bale of lambs wool to station on dray, with Chessy.  A very fine day   242 lambs.

FR 12 DEC 1902
Did some work in garden.  Mowed long grass in garden and round house.  Hot day.  John shifted sheep off flat on to Ridges & Widerups.  Lilly round today.
SAT 13   Sledged battens etc up to 3 gateways and made hurdle.  Got weights of wool.
SUN 14   Shut up sheep on Widerups.  Hot in the forenoon.  Five goslings, a good size got into water box on hill and died in the box last night.  Mr Garry for tea.  All hands at home. Cool evening.  Total number of sheep I make it 814
MON 15   Put carrot seed in garden & raked in some where potatoes missed growing.  John & Top drove to Canon Webbs Re Confirmation.  Eva’s tooth ached & her mother took her to Dr Gradmans but his instruments were not fine enough to extract the tooth or teeth.  This has been a showery day.

Mowed in front for a few hours.  A good hay making afternoon.  John got a letter from Charlie. At night El dove Gertie John & Mr Garrie to Orm. Concert.
WED 17   Bad weather, cannot do much work   Wheeled some gravel into cowshed and at house.  1st wool sale in Napier today.
TH 18   Mowed a little.  Squally.  John took Strawberry to F Schmidts bull.  He & Top drove to Canon Webb’s.  He caught a 2lb trout in creek today.  El attended church meeting at Becketts.  Mr Garry & Claude for tea.  Rough night heavy rain.  Wool sold.  7 bales 5d per lb.  2 Do fine x bred 5¼, lambs 4½, Bel pes 3½
FR 19   Mowed some – corner plantation.  At night all hands drove to Orm Church to attend Confirmation Service.  Gertie & Fanny Allen, girls John & two Cantley boys.  Fine night.

Mowed oak plantation.  Very thin.  Sledged in whatever hay was dry.
SUN 21   Fine hot day, frost last night grass white this morn.  Potatoes blackened on tops.  Top & John church   I shifted ewes & lambs out of Widerups onto flat & ridges.  All but John drove to Ada’s in evening.
MON 22   Sledged in all hay dry in front and also that in oak and corner plantation.  Neils Larsen brought Factory cheque £4.8.6 after paying for butter & shares.  We got up at 5 this morning & worked until 7 or half past.  A grand day for hay.
TU 23   Nils Larsen early this morning on the road.  We had not finished milking.  John took our milk to factory in dray & got 3.7 lbs pollard at Randersons.  Rain nearly all day.  Killed 3 lambs this afternoon.

WED 24 DEC 1902
Cut the lambs up.  John took one to Orm & sent it to Mr Founeau.  Nils Thodsen took one & paid 10/-  half a lamb sent to Alick Hegh – 5/-   Paid him 12/ – for carting 10 bales wool to Station.  Thunder & lightning and very heavy rain.  El & Co drove to township to do Christmas shopping.  Mrs Wallace sent a book “The Master Christian” by Marie Corelli to El.  John drove to meet Charlie at last train.  A set of shoes put on mare today.  Mr Woods yesterday went to Umutoroa with his express to bring home his two sons for Xmas.  He found their remains in their burnt tent at a place where they had been bush falling for their father
TH 25 XMAS   A nice dull calm day.  A Neal & Charlie here.  After tea went with El to Woods’, next house, with wreath and some flowers.

A fine day John & Ernest Parsons went fishing to 1st[?] river.  I caught 4 trout.  I went to the funeral of the Woods Brothers who got burnt in their tent up Umatoroa way.  A big funeral.  Signed cheque for Jonasen £3 as relief from Jubilee fund, at Mr Becketts.
SAT 27   Mowed in front.  All hands with Charlie went fishing to Manawatu   Caught 2 trout.  Charlie left for Te Aute by express.  Sports at Orm.

Got home this morning from hall & Mr Becketts about 2 AM.  Got up & milked and went to bed again & slept until nearly 12 o’clock.  John got up sooner & went fishing with Ernest Parsons fishing, got no fish.  All hands went to see Cricket match Norsewood v Waipukurau.  Former won by 13 runs.  C Engelbretsen 81 caught.
FR 2   Finished mowing in front and Orchard plantation.  Windy today.  El & Eva gone by 1st train to Agincourt   Wool money received.  Cheque  £73.18.4 ballance after deducting advance £20 and bales £1.8.0   Windy for hay making
SAT 3   Sent cheque to Union Bank.  Paid Mr Becketts bill £4.8.0   Got in all dry hay in front.  Nearly all of it in shed now.  Rode up to Randersons after their dog.  He was chasing the sheep on flat.  Heavy rain at night.

SUN 4   At home.  In the afternoon John and F Magnusen Killed a rabbit on Mortensens.  A fine dry day.  Walked over paddocks.  A great amount of grass in back section.  Old duck came home with 9 young ones
MON 5   Wire netted a piece of ground in garden for duck & little ones.  Sledged in the last of the hay in good order.  Mrs Wills & Flossie came today.  John took his & Gerties boots to Jackwell to be ½ soled.  He rode away to fish evening.
TU 6   Got in reserve sheep & docked 1 lamb.  Put ewes & lambs on ridges except 3 fat ewes.  Mustered back & put on flat.  John caught good trout.  El & Eva came home.  Brought gobbler.

WED 7 JAN 1903
Got in dry sheep.  Mr McGilvray came & picked out wethers & then went over to Gilbert McLeods, whilst we got in Ewes & lambs.  Picked ewes 32 & wethers 69.  Prices, Ewes 14/-  Wethers 15/6   McGilvray rode across to Neals.  A splendid fat ewe lamb run against a gate & got killed, bled it & dressed it.  Mr H Hall & 2 children called.  G McLeod came at night with his fat sheep & put them in yds.
TH 8   Drove all sheep off flat on to back.  Took fat sheep to Ormondville & trucked them.  John walked in front.  A very windy day.  Mrs Thodsen and her sister in law called.  El came with buggy to Orm & drove us home.  Drove up with John & El to Campbells & we bought 2 pairs of boots.  Mine 14/-, Johns 12/6  paid £3.16.  the amount of Campbells bill.

Another rough day, wind and rain.  John firewood splitting & chopping.  No sheep in front paddocks now.
SAT 10   John went this morning to see Cricket match in Napier, played between Lord Hawke’s team & 15 of Napier   He stays at Fourneau’s until Monday next.  Gertie also goes to Fourneaus & Napier.  Milly & Pearl goes home.  Drove all of them to the 1st train this morn.  Made a mall[?], thinned carrots etc.
SUN 11   Milked early with El.  After dinner walked over paddocks to Hans Mortensen   In the evening Alf Neal Mrs Smith Mr & Mrs Thodsen jun

TU 13   Walked over back & made some fires.  El sold 1lb of black wool to a Norsewood lady for the purpose of knitting socks to be exhibited at forthcoming show.  Mrs [Messrs] Hall & Billows called on their way to Norsewood.

Sledged some slabs for bridge across flat to corner.  Drove with El & Eva to meet John & Top at Orm.  Had to wait until 9 o’clock as the train was late coming from Waipawa races.  They also had to wait at Farndon 3 hours.
TH 15   Got in cattle from back to take out the heifer “Wildy” & her calf, & put them in Reserve to castrate the calf & quiet him.  Sheep money £75.17.6.  Cheque from Wm McGilivray came.  Mr & Mrs Thodsen jun & Mrs Smith came at night & stayed for some time.
FR 16   Took “Wildy” to F Schmidts bull.  Sent cheque for £1.17.10 Johns Life insurance money to Mr Gibson   Light rain nearly all day.  Sent £75.17.6 Longburn cheque to Union Bank.
SAT 17   Killed a wether.  El met Mrs Colbert & 2 children at Orm.  Worked at 1st bridge on flat.  Attended Farmers Union meeting.

MON 19   Finished bridge at “Island corner”   John splitting firewood.  El & Co & Mrs Colbert & children drove to Orm but missed the train.  Victor not well, teething.
TU 20   Put stringers for bridge over creek near dip.  Eva & Ethel paddling in creek all day.  Messrs Billows & Hall called today.  Cecil Mrs Colbert & all hands at Ping Pong tonight.  Victor better.
WED 21   Drove up to H Campbell’s & bought a pair bluchers 4/11 hat 8/11   Gave him cheque £3 got change & paid saddler 4/- brought home £2 for El to travel with to Papakura.  El Eva Mrs Colbert & 2 children went by express train.  Dragged in henau stringer with mare.  Made small mall  John & Cecil went fishing to Man. None.

Put 3 stringers, one totara (middle) one henau & one maire across creek for bridge.  Got factory cheque £5.8.2 after paying for butter & shares, about a pound per cow, test[?] 3.45.  Drove up to P G Grant & settled up with him.  Gave him factory cheque & £30.0.0 cheque on Union Bank.  Recd  £    Paid Tuckwell 7/-   Got 1 Cwt white wire at Mr Becketts.  At night attended church meeting at Mr Becketts.  This evening castrated Wildy’s calf.  This has been a calm hot day.
FR 23   Went to Old mill for load of slabs to use as decking on bridge.  Difficult to pick out good slabs.  Only 6d a load for one horse.  Some rain in the morning (light)   Afterwards dry calm day.
SAT 24   Went with dray to old mill.  Got no slabs.  Mr Ellis 7th day advent. objected.  J Neal for lunch  Star gave symptoms of coming round today.  Paid O’Hara’s bill = 6/7

MON 26   A lot of rain fell last night.  Today worked some at bridge.  John rode over to Neals.  No one at home.  Fine afternoon.
TU 27   Went to old mill with mare & dray.  Bought a heap of facecuts from Ellis.  Paid 10/- for it.  After dinner dove with John to Orm sale.  Bought 73 ewes at 7/3 and 51 ewe lambs a few wethers etc at 6/-   Paid Monteith cheque for £41.15.3   Paid Adela Olsen for milk carriage 7/-   John & Top drove to meet Alice at last train.  Mrs & Miss Randerson called.  News this afternoon of Miss Petersen’s death.
WED 28   Went to funeral.  Drove from cemetery to Orm.  Took ticket for Tomoana 4/8 in express.  Henry Fourneau & Babba met me with gig.  Stayed the night at Mr Fourneau’s.  They are very busy  picking packing & sending away fruit.  Mr Elder delivered the 3 paintings paid £12. 0.

TH 29 JAN 1903
Up at 4.30.  Had tea etc with the boys and went with the loads (2) of fruit to Hastings in there at 6.30.  A thorough wet day.  Rams of all breeds for sale.  Bought 5 Lincolns £2.2 each.  Had lunch at O’Reilly’s Hotel.  Came home by 3 o’clock train leaving Hastings was met at Station by Gert & Alice with buggy.
FR 30   Went for load of facecuts to old mill.  Canon Webb cam up in coach & El & Eva also.  All had lunch & John then drove the Canon round to see his parishioners.  Finished decking the new bridge

MON 2   Went to old mill with Eva & John.  Sent to Northern In Co. £13.15.0.  Dug a little in far garden.  Mr Garry came at night & stayed a while.  A cold night
TU 3   Put all back sheep in yard & picked out & put in Reserve 101 lambs & 7 culls put on back 135 culls.  Others in Ridges.

WED 4 FEBRUARY 1903
Finished packing out ewes, culls & lambs.  Breeding ewes 240 including 103 two tooths lambs 258 Culls, including wethers, cull ewes etc 306   The lambs including 24 woolly ones bought at Orm sale are in Reserve.  Breeding ewes on Widerups.  Culls on back.  Picked out 40 breeding ewes from amongst those bought at Orm.  John took cow Maffie to Alick Hegh’s bull.  Hot day.
TH 5   Sent cheque to Wms & K £10.10.0 for 5 rams, also ordered from them three drums of Murtons dip & 2 of oil for paint.  All breeding ewes on Widerups & some culls on ridges.  Made  hurl[?] for reserve corner.  John caught 2 good trout, our creek.
FR 6   John thrashing cocksfoot.  Top & Alice & babba drove to Orm for fruit & vegetables from Papakura.  El sent vegetables to Agincourt.  Sledged in log for bridge & bedding for pigs consisting of rough grass.

SAT 7 FEB 1903
Drove with El & Ev to Mr Robinsons & purchased groceries etc.  Paid cheque £3.0.0 got 6/- or 7/- change.  Heavy showers.  John got some firewood.  I dug some in top garden.  J Neale for tea.  Plenty of grass likely to be.
SUN 8   All at home.  Mr Garry in the afternoon.
MON 9   Went to old mill for facecuts etc.  No more timber there worth going for.  Made hurl for draining yard at dip.  Also made frame with wire netting to keep chickens in dray shed.  El & Co drove to township.  A very fine day.  Very good potatoes in garden this year.  Put all lambs with the old culls out of reserve on to the splendid feed on flat.  Cows give only ½ a canful of milk at a milking now.  Feed pigs twice a day with garden stuff, potatoe stalks, dock leaves, couch grass etc put into Kerosene tin & half or three quarters filled up – pored over with milk, they do well on it.  We give a pepper tin-ful of wheat to hens daily & milk.

Greased bugg axels.  H. Hall called   John went with mare & dray to Orm for oil & dip but none there.  Went twice today.  He sent wire to Wms & Kettle.  Dug in far garden   Sent cheque to Wms & Kettle for dip & oil £5.  Put all rams, 8 – in Reserve today.
WED 11   All hands drove to Takapau sports   Horse “Moses” in buggy, a hot day.  Left the grounds 5.10 PM home at 7.  John took “Moses” home, paid 5/- to Mrs Fred Schmidt for use of horse.
TH 12   Took cow “Star” to A Hegh’s bull.  Finished digging in top garden   Sawed henau strainer & length of posts on flat for O Gundersens fence, which is bad, wires slack enough for lambs to walk through.  John gone to Orm with mare.  He got oil & dip which went to Dannevirk in mistake.  El & Co made some fires in Reserve.  Warm day.  John getting some cocksfoot seed.

FR 13 FEB 1903
Got strainer & some posts on to fence that require repairing.  Dug 7 or 8 post holes, John got in firewood & caught 2 trout   Mrs D Grant & Miss Isaacson.  Aggie Gollan  & Mrs Parsons sen called.  At night Mrs Thodsen & Tilly came & stayed a while.
SAT 14   All hands except John drove to Danevirk.  A chestnut horse of Carl Schmdts in buggy.  Bought at Calder Drummond & Co 6ft 6in x cut saw, handsaw, 1 1/8 inch auger files, ordered 800 gallon tank Gordons.  Top has a sore throat, got medicine at Chemist Jefferey’s.  She went to sleep in buggy coming home, left for home at 3.10.  Bought at Chemist Priors 2/- worth of Strychnine.  Top’s throat swollen.
SUN 15   Found a first class ewe dead near 3 gateways, wires twisted over head & she was chocked.  Mr Mrs & Miss Beckett walked down this evening.  Top in bed all day sleeping.  Cannot eat, face swollen.

MON 16 FEB 1903
Top in bed all day.  Eat but very little.  John caught large eel up gully today.  Mrs & Miss Randerson called this afternoon.  Dug a few postholes.  John helped at washing   Mr Walter Lichtwark “teacher of violin & all stringed instruments” called.  A large case of plums & apples from Agincourt.
TU 17   Sawed & split some henau posts on flat.  Another hot day.  Flossie & Mrs Collins came at night to see Top.  She is better today, regained her voice.
WED 18   Repairing fence Gundersen – Flat put in some big henau posts.  John laid them with Chessie & then went to Cricket match or practice in Norsewood.
TH 19   Emptied the old iron tank and went to Orm with dray & got the new 800 gal tank, freight 2/8 from Danevirke.  Top better was up today.  Sent Robjohns case of bottles & £1 for stout.

FR 20 FEB 1903
Dug out old blocks where iron tank stood.  Put in fresh blocks & boarded over them & set tank thereon.  El & Alice papering hall.
SAT 21   Painted tank.  Got cheque £5 from factory after deducting shares & butter.  Worked at Gundersens fence until late   El Alice & John at Montgomerie’s play.
SUN 22   All at home.  Canon Webb called & Flossie   Walked over paddocks.  A sprinkling of rain.
MON 23   Finished Gundersens fence.  Painter Olsen came over to see about dipping.  Sent Bank Passbook & receipts for £250 to Union Bank.  John entered flowers to be exhibited at show on Wednesday.  Drove round Ngamoko way with list for ½ yearly Subscription for Church.  Saw a lot of first class cows at Messrs Morgan’s & Cantleys.  Another hot day.  John put the 5 Lincoln rams with the ewes this afternoon.  Plenty of feed in every paddock.

TU 24 FEB 1903
Dug some very good potatoes of 3 varieties for show tomorrow, Finley’s Up to date.  White elephant and Bath Kidney.  A shower.
WED 25   All hands went to show, brought up sheep for guessing Competition   Johns Dahlias flowers muck etc.  For guessing the weight of sheep 70/-   Knut Olsen & A Neal guessed 59 lbs the actual weight 58 ¾ £3.10. result, besides the Carcase which brought when sold by Auction (Dutch) 10/6   John’s Dahlias got 1st prize.  The timber which formed tables in Hall I bought for the sum of £1.2.6.  Nearly 12 o’clock when we got home.
TH 26   Got home 2 loads of timber.  S Hulena called about dipping.
FR 27   Carted home a third load of timber.  Made dam across creek for dipping.  Paid Mr Martin £1.2.6. for timber.

SAT 28 FEB 1903
Got yards & dip ready.  Hulena & his three sons came & dipped their 418 sheep and left for home at half past 11.  He paid me by cheque for £1.8.0.  Top went with Peter Olsen to Danevirk for the last time.  Olsen not going again.  Top got birthday present from Pop Fourneau by train – an album.  This has been a dry month.
SUN 1st MARCH 1903
Tops birthday.  18 years today.  Eva gave her a birthday present of cash 4/- I gave her a sovereign.  John had nothing to give.  All except John went to church in the school.  He was not ready & we drove on without him.  A cold day this was.
MON 2   Paid Nils Larsen this morn £1.0.0. up to 1st March.  Will send only one can from today.  Milking the cows once a day, in the morning.  Paid Mrs F Schmidt 5/- for taking 2 cows to her bull.  Dipped 264 lambs & put them on Ridges.

Sent Reserve rent today £2.5.6.  Harry Hall came up by coach from Napier and stays tonight.  Wrote to Julius Sandtman   Put all back sheep on Flat for tomorrow.
TU 3rd   Skinned a wether that I found dead on back.  Got in sheep off Flat & picked out fats & put them on Reserve  put breeding ewes to sell on flat.  Put 13 good ones on Widerups with the 240 or 238 there now.  Frank Smiths boys rode up to get a history book off John.  Worked at bridge approach this evening   John went to Norsewood to practice Cricket.
WED 4   Got in ewes & dipped them 262 including the 5 Lincoln rams.  Put them on Flat.  Yarded the sheep I had picked out for Mortensen & picked out 13 of the fattest & put them in Reserve with the others, making 114 for Widerups.  Telegram from McGillivray to say he cannot come tomorrow.  Every day dry.

TH 5 MARCH 1903
Put fat sheep & others off reserve into Widerups & all out on back.  John lame his big toe swollen.  Worked at bridge approach, wheeled earth to & made it up.  El, Ev & Top drove to Norsewood & got bushel barley 4/- pollard 1/- worth.  Pollard is selling at 13/6 for 150 lbs.  A hot day.
FR 6   Finished at the bridge.  Went up gully with the tools & put in some post in the low ground amongst the rushes.  John sledged me some posts.  McGillivray telegraphed that he will come in the morning for sheep.  Little Ella Grant here today.  In the evening put ewes off flat on to Widerups and put back sheep on flat.  Miss Oliver Mrs Collins called, collecting for W. Church   Rain has set in tonight at 6.30.  Sultry.
SAT 7   No rain to speak of.  Came out hot again.  Put sheep off flat into yard before breakfast.  McGillivray & drover pick out only 29  16 w  13 ew

The price for wethers 13/6 Ewes 10/-   We dipped the remainder 261 to be put on back.  We dipped for Gilbert McLeod 292.  Mr Leichwark came with his violin & gave Top her first music lesson.  El paid him a quarter in advance £2.2.0.  At night all except myself went to town   Bernard Bengtsen called to enquire dip
SUN 8   All at home   El Ev Top & Mr Garry drove round block at night, as no church at Orm.
MON 9   Sent letter & cheque to A L Gordon £5.5.6. for tank & one to N.Z. Dairyman.  Put all Ewes off Widerups on to Flat counted 263 including 5 rams.  Dipped the 3 rams on hill   Gilbert McLeod dipped today 139   Some light rain today.  It cleared off & came out warm.  Put in post at middle gate.
TU 10   J & B Bengtsen dipped their   sheep.  Another hot day.  Paid 12/-   El at Ericksens put in savings bank cheque £200.  Little Ella Grant staying here just now.

WED 11 MARCH 1903
Working at fence up gully.  John went early with E Collinge to play cricket at Onga Onga.  Norsewood won.  Some rain today & rain is falling at present.
TH 12   Finished post & rail fence in gully.  Made some fires.  Shook turnip & rape seed in far garden.  Showers.  John fetched in 3 sledge loads of firewood.  Top put £50 in Savings Bank.  Eva got box of grapes from Greenmeadows.  Letter from Mrs Wallace.
FR 13   Split totara log on ridges got 19 good posts   Mr Bak came & dipped his sheep 218   Berny Bengtsen with him.  Paid 14/-   All hands except me went to School pic nic at Gollans.  Good burning day.  El Top John at concert tonight. School.
SAT 14   Made up some fires.  Got in lambs and examined them & found ticks alive & eggs on them.  Dipped them over again 5 o’clock when we finished dipping.  Put all of them on back 262.  Made the dip twice the strength

SUN 15 MARCH 1903
John drove the ducks home from P. Becks, two of them gone, one lame one with a leg & a wing broken.  Six here now instead of 9.  Gave P Beck Stockholm tar for a cut on his mare’s leg.  One or two heavy showers.  Mr & Miss Garvie this evening
MON 16   Made fires about gully & beehive in the forenoon.  Fencing in afternoon   Top drove up to Mrs Grants for Miss Garry.  Windy today.  A good burning day.  A letter from Mrs Lockhead.  One from Mr McGillivray with cheque for £16.18.0 which is 8/- less than I expected as he bought the 16 wethers at 13/6 each and the 13 ewes at 10/- each & paid me at the rate of 13/- only for the wethers.
TU 17   Sawed 2 henau strainers for gully gateway.  Made up some fires.  The fire came from Mortensen’s and down the gully & along the face of the ridge  over pond.  A box of mixed fruit from Agincourt.

After writing at 9 o’clock a surprise party came after games supper etc they went home at 12.
WED 18   Went with John over back to see the amount burnt.  A great sweep.  Made up some fires.  The fires are now in the scrub and many standing trees have caught.  John cricketing afternoon, at night all hands including Miss Garry, excepting myself & Eva have drove to concert in Hall.  The breeze continues & many standing trees & logs on back are blazing,  Windy now for 3 or 4 days.  Sawmill near Takapau dwelling house & woolshed etc at Te Ohou   Harris’s 2 hay stacks & other damage done.
TH 19   Put 2 very big henau holding down posts in fence at Rabbit Gully.  Dug part of 2 strainer holes in gully gateway.  Fire in scrub at back & over a good deal of section.  Some very big rimu trees burnt down.  John drove Miss Garry & Top to first river.  A breeze today again.

Worked at Gully gateway.  John got 2 hind shoes on mare.  Top drove Miss Garry to Station.  Some good showers.
SAT 21   Worked at fence in the forenoon.  After dinner dipped 250 sheep of Painter Olsen’s.  He paid for them 17/6   At night all hands to Wesleyan Festival.  Was in charge of sheep Guessing.  The sheep brought in 28/- home at 10.30   John worked forenoon with Alick Hegh   El paid Mr Beckett’s bill £8   Got Factory cheque this morn £3.16.9   11lbs butter at 10d = 9.2 shares 4 = 13/2  Test 4.  Only milk now in the mornings.  Got only ½ can of milk.  Dry weather.
SUN 22   Walked over to J Neals.  He gave me a cheque to pay his Road rates.  Mrs Westall & her 2 children Siggy & Mr Johnston drove over here in the afternoon.  Dog “Bran” came here today, two boys came for him at night.

MON 23 MARCH 1903
John very sick last night.  Had to get out of bed very often.  Did not do much work today.  He bathes Alfred Thodsen’s horse’s hoof or leg 3 times daily.  Put in henau strainer in new gateway.  A very fine day.  El paid £4.16.7 to A Olsen as Road Rates Also Neals rates.
TU 24   Working at new gateway.  £1.8. cheque sent to me by G McLeod for dipping   John painting gates & playing cricket.
WED 25   Top & Eva drove to Makotuku & got a bag of flour, bag of sugar etc at Robinson’s.  Split & laid some henau posts near new gateway.  John went on hill to see new post Office opened by Mr Hill.  Good steady rain set in about 3 o’clock   El Top & John gone to Social or dance in hall.  Steady rain & a dark night.
TH 26   Sledged some long rails to Widerups.
FR 27   Gully at back.  H Mortensen dipped 322.  Brought his sheep across our paddock.  Florrie Ada & 2 children came

Finished in Pic Nic Gully.  Canon Webb for lunch & John drove him round   In the evening made up fires on back.  Top got her music lesson.  Let the two pigs have the run of shed paddock.  Miss Davis for tea.
SUN 29   All hands at church (school)   Mr Garry came down with us to dinner & all except John dove over to Painter Olsen’s.  Last night our peaches & a leg rope were stolen.  All except El & Eva at Wesley Church.  Crowded.  Harvest Fest sermon
MON 30   Making up fires & burning off on ridges near new gateway & on back sec   John splitting firewood on flat.
TU 31   F Kilkolly brought up the 2 sacks of rye grasseed & 6lb chewings fescue & 6 lbs purple top turnip seed in a mistake as I ordered 6 lbs redtop 9.5   Mixed one sack & shook some in afternoon a good deal of rain today.  Licence Election.  We voted.  El & Top shopping at P.G. Grants.

WED 1 APRIL 1903
A showery boisterous forenoon.  Killed two young roosters.  Cricket match Norsewood v Danevirk.  Norsewood won.  Made up fires on back in the afternoon.
TH 2   Dragged some logs together with mare on ridges & made up fires.  Part of forenoon & whole afternoon shaking   Guy Calender called with samples of grasseed from Wms & Kettle.  Dug box of potatoes.
FR 3   Shaking grasseed all day.  Rain nearly all day.  El not well today   John went to Norsewood at dinnertime & got a letter for me from Richard Clark an old friend in Kings County Ireland
SAT 4   Shaking up to 10 o’clock, then too windy made up fires.  After dinner came on very heavy rain.  Shook grassed for a couple of hours in very heavy rain.  John drove Top up for her music lesson.  He sledged in one load of firewood.  Note from Mrs Lochhead.  A young son.

MON 6   A good day for grasseed shaking did not finish.  El drove to the hill & settled Ericksens bill £2.3.6. & bought boots for John & Top for winter
TU 7   Shaking on back.  John paid 5/- to Alick Hegh for 2 cows with his bull  he got a double barrel muzzle loader from A Hegh.  Is to work it out.  He shot 2 quail.  Canon Webb in Library, called a meeting of parishioners to see about building a church.
WE 8   Finished shaking grasseed on patches.  Made up fires.  Killed & skinned a poor ewe for dog.  Calm dry weather
TH 9   Fine calm day.  Dug out some potatoes in garden,  A good crop this season.  Palle Jensen called & gave us some good eating apples.  £3.0.0. cheque changed at P.G. Grants for El & Top travel expenses.  Letter from Mrs Frances.

SAT 11   Went to see Cricket match Norsewood v Napier High School & 3 teachers included.  Latter won.  John & Fred Martin played.  Sent letter & 2 papers to Richard Clarke.  Top after her music lesson went to Napier where she was to be met by Poppie Fourneau.  At night attended a Farmers Union Meeting.
SUN 12 EASTER SUNDAY   All at home.  Fine   Top at Fourneaus.  All drove to Waikopiro
13 Easter Monday   Put cows & weaners on back.  Kept in Reserve 5 cows & one calf not weaned.  Put all sheep off Widerups & ridges on to Flat.  No other work today.  Top did not come when the buggy went to meet her.  Alice came up from express train.  John on Hill practicing cricket.  Very fine day.  Top came home by last train.  Came in coach.

Did not send any milk to factory this morning – not enough.  Worked with George & John at flower house.  Geo & Alice went away this afternoon.  Fine calm day.
WED 15   Norsewood cricket players went to Waipukurau this morning & played & won the last match of the season there for a shield.  Worked at the green house   At night attended vestry meetg at Canons.
TH 16   Put shelves & flowers in greenhouse.  A good shower fell.  El Eva Top Ella Grant drove to Makatoku to see Mr Duguid about “white Wyandotts” for Mr Frances.
FR 17   John working at A. Hegh’s.  Filled the drain at end of house & levelled off about there.  Sent Photos to Richard Clark and an “Auckland Weekly news”.  Got a bushel of barley for fowls at Becketts.
SAT 18   Got in some firewood.  Sent £1.17.0 to A.B. Gibson.  John at Hegh’s.  Found a strange ram amongst the ewes on back.

Found ram ”Darky” with ewes on back.  Got him into yards and also the other ram.  Norsewood School boys today played high school boys cricket, in Napier & only got beaten by 5 runs.
SUN 19   Walked over back.  Killed a ram found amongst the sheep on back.  Some rain in the morning.  John & Top at school church Mr Quintrell.  In the evening Miss Davis & Mr Garry.  John W. Garry Miss Davis Top went to the Wesleyan Church after tea.
MON 20   Sledged a post & 3 swingers & put them in fence between back & Mortensens, where the fence was burnt.  John at Heghs & after tea went to cricket meeting in Library.  Sledged in some firewood.  A very rough day.  Nils Larsen went past this morn without yesterdays and this mornings milk, must send three days or rather 3 mornings milk in the morning.  Cold day, rough showery night and dark.
TU 21   Sent sunday’s monday’s & this mornings milk to Factory this morning.

Eva rode the mare out to the back this morning through new gateway & we left the foal there to be weaned.  Brought in a load of firewood on dray.  John chopped down a matai tree in reserve & we sawed it for firewood.  Tonight El Top & John walked to library – lawn tennis meeting.  Mr Campbell appointed new Factory Manager.
WED 22   Went with El to Hastings Autumn Show.  Met all the Fourneaus there & went home with them in the evening.  Got Factory cheque £1.19.8.
TH 23   Another fine day.  Stayed at Rosebank
FR 24   Drove into Napier with Mr Fourneau horse & trap.  Saw Mr Kettle & did some business with him.  Changed Cheque £7 at Union Bank & left pass book there & bought a cheque book of 30.  Went on bluff hills etc.  Bought many things.
SAT 25   Came home.  Willy drove us to Hastings.  Brought up & gave to Mr Martin a 90lb pumpkin 2 mangolds 2 carrots

SUN 26 APRIL 1903
Took mare out to back & let the foal have a suck as her udder seemed large.  Mr Garry for dinner & tea.  Top & Miss Davis & John to Canons service in school.  Mr Garry came back with them.  All but Eve & me gone to Wesleyan Church tonight   N Nicholaisen left small mob of sheep in yard this evening to be dipped tomorrow.
MON 27   Put Buttercup out on back.  John splitting firewood on Reserve.  Sven Andersen dagged & crutched Nicholaisen’s 50 sheep & we then dipped them.  Painting house.  El painted front.
TU 28   Painting house.  John split firewood & then went with others to decorate hall.  El & Top drove up tonight to decorate.
WED 29   All hands painting house.  At night El Top & John drove up to Cricketers concert & dance.  Mr Jull the County Chairman presented the Shield   Home a ¼ to 3 AM.   Very fine weather.

FR 1st   Got in ewes & took out the 4 Lincoln rams & put them in Reserve with the other 3 rams.  Put the ewes 258 on flat  there is one wether lamb with them.  El Eva & Top drove to Mrs L Andersens & after tea walked to another meeting in Library.  Paid Mr Beckett £1.19.8.
SAT 2   Painted part of woolshed.  Got small bag of Cowgrass   lbs from Wms & Kettle.  John John left here at 5 AM  this morning and went shooting with A Randerson.  He got home after dark.  No game.  They shot six quail.  Posted 6 Heralds to R. Clarke one “Dairyman” & one Auckland.  W. News.  Nils Nicholaisen paid for dipping 4/-   Mr Garry went away in coach for Spit.

Some rain last night & this morning.  Went over back section.  John & Top at school – church.  Miss Davis for tea & afterwards went to Wesleyan church.  Some rain.
MON 4   More rain cool day.  John carting fire out of Reserve.  “Darby” the ram amongst ewes on flat, got him in.  Put one pig in sheep yards, the other outside.  Yesterday they wandered over to Magnusens section.  Sharpened John crosscut.  Tidied & cleaned up woolshed.  Top joined Library & got 2 books today.
TU 5   Painting door end of woolshed.  El Top & E drove out after dinner begging up Ngam[?] way & down Gundrie’s way with Mrs D Grant & Edy Martin.  John splitting firewood.  We Sidelanged[?] “Darby”.  Letter from Wms & Kettle Saying they have arranged £300 at 4 ¾ %.
WED 6   Got in back sheep & dagged them & picked out raddled some fat & forward ewes & wethers, left some on flat unfinished.  Went with Mr Beckett at night to Watson

TH 7 MAY 1903
Found two tooth wether cast on back yesterday.  Brought it home on mare today   John riding, it will be all right.  Got in sheep off flat & dagged them & put them back – 505 total on back now.  19 on lawn, weak & small hoggt except 4 or 5 to kill.  John stapled some wires on McGreery part of fence & raked in grasseed on one or two burnt patches on back.  Mrs P G Grant & children Mrs Pettersen & hers & Miss Redward came this afternoon.  I have raddled 44 ewes blue on rump & 23 wethers on head for Palmerston next week.  A letter today from Mr Ernst Perry.
FR 8   All the women & girls in the neighbourhood making pastry etc for Mr Garrys & social club social.  He came up in coach with Carl Schmidt.  We sledged in firewood to boil for pigs.  Killed fat ewe for meat.  John went to C C Smiths, Re trucking & selling sheep.

All hands to Hall.  Mr Garry presented with dressing case, green stone pendant & case of instruments from Gymnasts & school children.  Home at 12.30 heavy frost.  Sent letter to Wms & Kettle accepting £300 at 4¾% at the end of July next.
SAT 9   El & co in township, brought McIntosh for John £2.2.6. new blankets at P G Grant   Gave small lambs doses of gum water.  John sawed firewood & shot 2 quail   J Neal came over.  Alice came by coach from Orm back from Hawera.  Advised Abraham & Wms of truck of sheep.  Mr Cantley called & paid 10/0 stipend fund.
SUN 10   All at home forenoon.  Afternoon there came Mrs Campbell & children Mrs Cumming  Afterwards Edie Martin & Miss Davis.  After tea all of them went to church.  Eva & me here.
MON 11   Put 14 small hoggs in reserve.  A Hegh took home ½ a sheep.  Split a totara log on back.  Rain.  Sent A W News to E Perry.  John bought 2 wedges at J Colling’s

TU 12 MAY 1903
Mustered back sheep & picked out 41 ewes & 21 wethers.  Raining hard all the time & yards muddy.  Picked out 3 fat ewes for our own killing which makes 4 now on hill.  Two of the bought ewes got through reserve fence and are with the ewes now.  The 62 picked sheep on flat tonight.  On back now 460 mixed sheep.  Total number of sheep after 62 are sent to Palmerston 740 besides 4 for killing for pigs & 4 for mutton.  This leaves another truck load to be sold in the spring.
WED 13   Drove the 62 fat sheep to Orm. & home again, no truck.  Should have driven the sheep earlier so that they would get to Palmerston in time to be untrucked on the same day.  Have them on flat tonight.  Letter from Miss Fourneau.  Coming on Sat
TH 14   A  thorough wet day.  Paster Topholm’s sale.  With El Shopping at P.G.G.  Put in two panes of glass in Hall glass door.  Sent letter Abraham & Williams.

El & Top drove up to Post Office & gave notice to draw out of Savings Bank £250.  John out all day with his gun, got 2 quail   Killed a fat sheep – (a bought ewe)   Light rain.
SAT 16   John met Mr & Mrs Fourneau at Orm.
SUN 17   All at home.  After tea Miss Davis Top & John went to W. Church.  A dull calm day.
MON 18   Killed an old Lincoln ran & boiled him with carrots for pigs.  Drove up to Post Office & El drew out ten £20 notes.  Killed a fat sheep after coming home from drive round by German Line.  Fine day.
TU 19   Drove up to Township & Top drew £50 out of P.O.  Sent to Wms & K £250 – 12 twenties & 10 ones in registered letter.  El & Top drove Mr & Mrs Fourneau to station Got a box of apples from Agincourt.  Latin for potatoe.  Solanum Tuberosium.
WED 20   Drove 38 ewes 22 wethers to Orm & trucked them to Palmerston by midday train   Got in & filled shed with dry sheep for crutching.

TH 21 MAY 1903
Crutched sheep in shed & turned back to big section as there was rain in the night.  Shut pigs in their small yard.  Signed Mortgage Deed for loan of £3000   Mr Beckett witnessed & signed it.
FR 22   John rode to Orm and posted the Mortgage Deeds before breakfast, to Cotterill & Humphries.  Got in sheep off back & as we crutched them we let them go out on ridges.  At night El & John & me went to Library, a Social Club meeting  Subject.  Bible reading in Schools.  Neg.   Factory cheque £1.0.5
SAT 23   Crutching.  Put on ridges 248.  Letter & cheque from Abraham & Wms they have made a mistake.  I sent 60 sheep, they paid me for 57 cheque £28.17.9.  Satisfactory letter arrived from Wms & K.  Top got no music lesson today.  No teacher.  Eva went to P.O. with her mother & put 10/- in Savings Bank.  Miss Davis here tonight.  John shot 6 or 7 quail this week.

MON 25   All hands except me drove to Mountains.
EMPIRE DAY.   Boiled carrots & meat for pigs   Got in remainder of sheep off back, filled shed.  Old ram missing.
TU 26   Crutched all dry sheep except 18 in shed tonight.  Put them on back & ewes on flat.  John found ewe cast on Widerups.  He went to Becks to look for old ram.  I found him standing in creek in Reserve.  Letter from Abraham & Williams enclosing cheque for 3 sheep = £1.12.1   From Wms & Kettle, bill for £9.6.9 interest due northern In Co & Carlisle & McL fee.  From W Robinson Potatoes for Sale  From Mr Fourneau.  Potatoes at Station.  El Top John gone to Ping Pong in Town Hall.  Posted letter with the 2 Palmerston cheques.

John splitting firewood on flat.  Went to Orm with dray & got 4 sacks potatoes from Rosebank.  3/9 freight.  A very fine calm day as usual.  Crutched the 18 which were in shed   444 now crutched & on back.  There may be one or two less as I killed one today.
TH 28   Put can on road today with 3 days milk in it but Nils Larsen did not go to Factory this morn.  He does not go on tuesdays or thursdays now.  Got set of shoes on mare today, paid 16/- amount of bill & 6/- for new set.  Paid Becketts bill to end April £3.13.3   shifted old iron tank from greenhouse near buggy shed.  John carted in 2 loads of matai firewood.  Commenced to fatten sow pig.  The other one outside feeding on grass.  Entered 3 head cattle with Mr Rose jun. for next Sale at Orm.  Rain this evening.

Killed old ram & boiled him for pigs with the last barrowful of carrots.  Sent letter to Wms & Kettle with £9.6.9 cheque.  Also to Cotterill & Humphries.  Emptied & spread out 3sks of potatoes in woolshed.  Alick Hegh called & got half sheep, owes 10/6
SAT 30   Showery day McGrevey dipped 575 sheep today before 3.30 PM.  Due 35/-   He got one wool bale.  John at Hegh’s
SUN 31   All at home.  Got in from back “Lilly” Red steer & heifer for tuesdays sale.
MON 1st JUNE 1903
Put 4 milking cows on ridges & left the three for sale on Reserve.  Started to fence round WC.  Mr Martin came to fill proposal to insure furniture and effects in house for £150   John at Heghs.  Donald Rose put 3 cows & some calves in Reserve to drive with mine to sale tomorrow.  Little Ella Grant here, is to go to Agincourt with El Top & Babba tomorrow.  Showers tonight and very cool.

This morning D Rose drove my three beasts with other cattle to Orm sale.  The three were sold for, each £5.12.6   No other cattle sold at the sale reserves too high.  El Top Eva & Ella Grant went to Agincourt by 9.15 train.  John to Shannon by midday train.  Cool day.  Heavy frost tonight
WED 3   All alone today.  Put milk can on road & brought it in.  Very little milk.  Found Hoggt cast in Reserve.  Skinned a very small hoggt that died in reserve.  Sledged in totara stakes & short pieces to put in ground for ends of hurls to stand on.  Put two of those blocks in ground at Gundersons.
TH 4   Went out to back with mare & sledge & fetched in house blocks – totara.  Killed a fat ewe.  Heavy frost this morning.
FR 5   Writing a paper on Shakespeare.  Drove to Orm & met El Ev & Top, at night I went to Library.  8 papers on Shakespeare.  Letter from  Harry Hall.

Put up part of fence at W.C.  Sledged in load of rails from back.  Sent letter & one Auckland Weekly News & 5 Heralds to Er Perry.
SUN 7   El at church (Mr Grants) Miss Davis came back with her.  In the evening Misses Learmont[?] & Miss Cumming for tea also.  All went to Wesleyan church but me and Eva.
MON 8   Very heavy frost this morn.  Ice thick.  Ground very hard.  El & Eva drove to Norsewood, got shirting.  Killed a poor sheep & boiled it with the last of the carrots, small potatoes etc. ½ sheep to Alick Hegh.  5/- to pay.  Took down some of three rail fence at long plantation
TU 9   Dug out some posts at long plantation & took down & sledged some rails to WC fence.  Canon Webb called to say he had an offer of buying Gospel Hall & section on which it stands for £100.  A meeting on Friday night at 8PM at Mr Becketts.  Cheque £16.3.6. from W Rose, proceeds of 3 fat cattle sold in Orm at £5.12.6.  A letter from John.  Dull tonight.  Change in the weather.

WED 10 JUNE 1903
Rain last night & this morning.  Drove up to P. G. Grants & bought ledger for diary.  Got bag flour at Becketts.  Mr Beck called to say he found one of our ewes cast & one eye picked out with hawk.  Sledged it home.  Shifted ewes from flat on to Widerups & ridges.  Called & paid Mr Martin insurance £1.4.0.
TH 11   No milk sent on Tuesday Wed or today   We get only a bucketful from the 4 cows.  We send it on Monday & Friday.  Rain today.  The ewe died this morn.  Poor “Nigger” done for.  Worked  some at fence at WC   Sloppy   Salvation man called with book & note.  John sent parcel – 3 kaka’s & 3 pokakos by train & coach & came himself at night.
FR 12   Sent ½ can of milk to Factry today.  Finished fence at WC.  At night went to meeting at Mr Becketts with refference to church purchasing Gospel Hall.  Agreed to buy it for £100  Gave sub of £5.  A Committee formed of 7 members.

SAT 13 JUNE 1903
Wheeled remainder of carrots and turnips etc to boiler & cut up sheep and boiled the lot for pig.  Mr H. Hall called.  at night with El & John went to Town Hall.  Had free passes.  H Hall came home with us.  He is hoarse & has a bad cold.  Top got her violin lesson.  John wrote Trafic maaner [manager], Napier about the guard giving him back the wrong end of railway ticket & seizing his luggage at Orm until he paid him 3/- which he borrowed off C Schmidt.
SUN 14   John & Top at school – church   Miss Davis in the evening, dull calm day.
MON 15   John split firewood.  Made small drain culvert on back near new gateway.  At night took the chair at Salvation Barracks.  An address by Major & Mrs Spargs.  El Ev Top at circus.  John at home here with Cl Randerson.
TU 16   Killed one of the pigs.  A good scald.  John split firewood.  Eva’s Birthday 6 years today.  She went to Danevirk with Ella & Mr P. G. Grant.  Many presents.

WED 17 JUNE 1903
Cut up & salted pig, about 200 lbs.  Cleaned up wash house.  Babba has entered on her 7th year.  Top has mumps.  We send milk twice a week to Factory.  Oak leaves withered.  One low bushy tree near road green.  Green leaves on Willows.  John gone to Jimmy Arthurs to see him about ploughing the front.
TH 18   Sawed log at “Precipice Gully” & split some slabs for culvert.  Showers.  El at Library.  Got 3 books.  A Hegh gave us a big head of cabbage.
FR 19   Working at culvert at precipice.  After dinner killed a fat sheep and salted bacon.  A fine day.  John went through ewes.  El & Eva drove to Norsewood.
SAT 20   Worked at culvert.  Frost this morning   Magnusen got bottle of dip.  A Hegh got ½ sheep.  J. O’Hara paid for dip 2/6.  Attended F Union Meet.  Got botte[?] W. at McLeod   El paid A Collins for Thodsen’s shaft 3/-

SUN 21 JUNE 1903
Rough day.  John went to school church.
MON 22   Did not milk cows yesterday.  Did not send any to Factory today.  Nils Larsen will not go to Factory for 3 weeks from now.  Brought cheque today 11/3 after paying for butter.  A hen laid today in the Greenhouse, the first.  Dragged 4 maire slabs to precipice gully & finished it.  John sawing henau for posts.  Young wattles eaten down in my garden with hares.  Windy today.  Salted the bacon.  Babba put money 7/- in bank today this makes £1.  El sent to Horton for shrubs etc
TU 23   The shortest days.  John got in ewes before breakfast & I crutched 71 & put 8 and 1 hogget on ridges for back.  Some in shed tonight.  Gum tree blown down at woolshed.
WED 24   Crutched 43 & put on Ridges 2   Rough day.  Heavy rain nearly all day.  El got letter from England.  Eva one from Mr Garry
TH 25   Cold wet miserable day & Snow.  Carl Schmidt brought 2 fowl crates & shrubs from T Horton Pahiatua

FR 26   Caught 35 hens & 4 ducks & put them in two coops & John took them to Orm in dray.  Put sheep in shed tonight for crutching
SAT 27  crutched 103 & put on ridges 29   John splitting firewood.  Top got lesson & spent the evening at Mr Ericksens (O)   Killed a ewe yesterday.  2 fine days
SUN 28   John milked & went with Walter Thodsen to see  the “Lignite mine Smoke”, this side of the Moari Woolshed   the rest of us went to Church in School   a very fine day.  Put 41 ewes in shed.
MON 29   Crutched the 41.  Put 15 on back.  This makes 204 on flat, 54 on back.  Collected for Canon Webb’s stipend £3.0.2.  Recd subscrips from Mr Martin £2.7.6.
TU 30   James Arthurs ploughed some of lawn today.  Paid C. Schmidt 2/6 for carriage of fowl crates & some shrubs.  Buttercup had bull calf today.  Crutched 16 reserve sheep.
