Educated Otago Boys’ High School; Otago University – Bachelor of Science 1942, Master of Science 1946; University of Birmingham – Doctor of Philosophy 1952.
Nuffield Research Scholarship 1959, Oxford.
Visiting Fellow Joint Institute Laboratory of Astrophysics, Colorado, USA 1967.  Formerly lecturer, professor, Beverly professor of physics.
Publications include Einstein (Oxford University Press, 1979, with A.E. Musgrove), Atoms and Light (New York: Plenum Publications Inc, 1991).
President Royal Society NZ; president Dunedin Concert Society 1972-80.
Awarded 1990 Commemorative Medal, Hector Medal of the RSNZ.
Leisure activities include croquet, music, reading, acting, gardening.
