Born Hastings, 19 April 1922, son of John Henry Dodd and Eva Elsie (née Weeks); married Jean Patricia Oldfield, daughter of George and Ida Oldfield, 1950; three sons one daughter.
Education: North East Valley Primary School, Dunedin; Otago Boys High School; Otago University, Bachelor of Science 1942, Master of Science (Physics) 1945 Master of Science (Maths) 1946; 1851 Exhibition Scholarship 1947; Birmingham University, PhD 1952; FIP; Chartered Physicist; FIPNZ; FRSNZ 1964; RSNZ Hector Medal;.
Lecturer in Physics, Otago University 1952, Senior Lecturer 1957; Nuffield Res Fellowship to Clarendon Lab, Oxford, 1959; Reader in Physics, Otago University 1960, Professor of Physics 1965; Visiting Fellow, Joint Institute of Lab Astrophysics, University of Colorado, 1967; Beverley Professor of Physics, Otago University, 1968-1988 (retired); Professor Emeritus, 1988; President, RSNZ, 1989.  President, Otago University Students Association, 1946; Committee Member and President: Globe Theatre, Dunedin, Dunedin Concert Society; Board of Governors, Otago Boys High School, 6 years.
