A PLEASANT VISIT TO HASTINGS

Heretaunga Street E., Hastings

Page 2
His Worship, the Mayor, Mr. W.E. Bate, O.B.E.
I am very pleased indeed to welcome to Hastings all Cadets and Visitors who have come here in connection with the annual Cadet Competitions. The Cadets and all others in active association with the Venerable Order of St. John are rendering a public service of significance and importance. I know of no better training in good citizenship than that young people and the not-so-young as well, should associate themselves enthusiastically with this Venerable Order which, based on Christian precept and practice, is a constant exemplar of the highest and best in Social Service.
I extend to you the greetings and good wishes of all our citizens and trust that your stay in Hastings will be both pleasant and memorable.
W.E. Bate

Mr. Harril Barden, C.St.J. District Commissioner.
In welcoming competing teams, officers and friends to our District, we do so with pleasure and pride in the Organisation to which we belong. May your stay with us be a happy one.
The success of the competitions is due to the forethought of an active Committee under the Chairmanship of District Officer Taylor.
May the best teams and competitors win, always remembering that sportsmanship and the knowledge we should gain from competing are of far more importance than the winning of trophies, however pleasing that may be.
On behalf of the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast St. John Ambulance District, sincere congratulations to all teams who are to so worthily represent their Districts.
Harril Barden

LANDMARKS IN HASTINGS AND NAPIER
A sight-seeing tour has been arranged for visitors on Sunday afternoon, leaving St. John Headquarters, Hastings, at 1.30.
The tour has been arranged for you to see as much of your host cities as possible. Two of the better known landmarks are Hastings’s and Napier’s clocks.
Pictured on the right is the clock of Hastings. It is regarded as the hub of the city; the railway lines beside it, travelling in a North-South direction divide city into East and West sectors; and Heretaunga Street, which runs at right angles to the railway lines marks the Northern and Southern boundaries.
Below is Napier’s floral clock. This is on the Marine Parade, which is well-known for its beauty. The Parade has many attractions, including a War Memorial Hall, Sound Shell, Skating Rink, boating Lake, Coloured Fountain, Tennis Courts, etc.
