Born Hastings, 7 December 1935, son of Ernest Charles Dudding and Winifred Jessie (née Hinton); married Lois Miller, daughter of Arthur and Jean Miller, 1958; one son five daughters.
Education: Hastings High School; Auckland Teachers College, Dip Teaching 1961.
Journalist: Hawkes Bay Herald Tribune, Hastings 1952-1955, Auckland Star 1955-1959; Teacher, Auckland primary schools, 1960-1966; Editor, Publisher, Mate, Auckland 1957-1966; Editor, Caxton Press, Christchurch, and Editor, Landfall, 1966-1972; Founder, Editor, Publisher Islands, Auckland, 1972 -; University of Auckland Lit Fellow (first to hold Fellowship), 1979; Sub-editor, Listener, part-time 1989-1990, full time 1990 -, including ‘Bookmarks’ column.
Recreations: badminton, cycling.
