One of the 13 stained glass ambulatory windows, the last of which were installed in 2005.

The Cathedral is the fourth church built on the present site. The first Church of St John the Evangelist, built in the early 1860’s, was replaced by a fine brick Gothic building. This, in turn, was destroyed by the 1931 earthquake. A temporary Pro Cathedral was then erected, and used until the construction of the present building.

This Cathedral is an impressive modern building reflecting the Anglican Church’s links with both Maori and European cultures. contains some interesting relics of the former Cathedral as well as symbols of its special links with Coventry Cathedral which was destroyed within a decade of the Napier Cathedral destruction.

Interesting features are the unusual and attractive wooden plaques around the walls, symbolizing the saints of the Church; the Maori Chapel with its hand-woven tukutuku panels; and the modern stained glass windows by the contemporary Wellington artist, Beverley Shore Bennett. An exhibition on the earthquake tells the Cathedral’s story.

The Cathedral is worth a visit during your stay in Hawke’s Bay.

Pictured, the Eagle of St John the Evangelist, one of the Cathedral’s 48 carved wooden plaques.

The Cross above the Altar was designed and made of wood and glass by Brian Grouden in 1975. The lighted red centre suggests the eternal presence of God. If looked at from the front the cross appears empty; if looked at from the side the outline of the crucified Christ is suggested. Between them, these two perspectives suggest the crucified and risen Christ.
