Born Wellington, 20 November 1927, son of William Tremere Foster and Alma Isobel (née Kinnear); married (1) Eileen June Gapes, daughter of Walter and Christina Gapes, 1953 (diss 1985); (2) Penelope Anne Griffith, daughter of Harry and Barbara Griffith, 1989; two sons one daughter.
Education: Napier Boys’ High School; Canterbury University, Bachelor of Science 1948, Master of Science 1949; Imperial College, University of London, PhD, DIC 1953.
Lab chemist, BALM Paints, 1950; British Oxygen Co, 1953-1955; NZ Industrial Gases 1955-1956; Chemical Division, DSIR, 1956-1963; Director NZPACRA, 1963-1974; President, NZIC, 1974; Director, BRANZ, 1974-1989 (retired); Director, Matrix Management Limited (consulting firm), 1989 -; Member, Manufacturing and Processing Committee, NRAC, 1978-1984; Conference Organiser, ‘Science & Technology for Development; (‘Science Summit’), 1985. Member, Trustees of National Lib, 1983-1989.
Recreations: yachting, chiefly off-shore cruising.
