Born Auckland, 27 December 1920, son of Charles Freer and May Beatrice (née Marks); married Sylvia Prudence Squire, daughter of Mr and Mrs H T Squire, 1941.
Education: Royal Oak Primary School; Auckland Grammar School.
Second World War, 12th Brigade, HQ Staff 1940-1943 (A/Sgt).  Journalist: Northern Advocate (Whangarei) 1937, 1939-1940, Hawke’s Bay Daily Mail (Napier) 1938; studied accountancy while in Army; Secretary, W Hunt & Son Limited, Auckland, 1943-1946; Labour Party Candidate, Eden, 1946; MP (Labour) Mt Albert, 1947-1981 (retired); Minister of Trade and Industry, 1972-1975; Minister of Energy Resources, 1972-1975; Chairman: Trade Opportunities Limited, Auckland, Sea Hatcheries Limited, Auckland; Director: Contra Shear Holdings Limited, Auckland, Entre Corporation Limited, Auckland, Petrocorp 1985-1988.  President, Motherhood of Man Movement, 1951-1959.
Sports: Auckland Rep, Junior 880 yards NZ Athletic Champs, Napier, 1936.
Recreations: gardening, reading, music.
