GAGE, Professor Maxwell
Emeritus Professor of Geology, Canterbury University.
Born Auckland 2 February 1913. Married 1938 Molly Rose Black.
Educated Auckland Grammar School; Auckland University College 1931-34 – Bachelor of Science (NZ) 1935; Victoria University College, Wellington 1935-36 – Master of Science (NZ) (1st class honours) 1937.  Doctor of Science (NZ) 1953. FRSNZ 1961.
Awarded Senior Scholarship in Geology 1934, Von Haast Prize 1937.
Retired, formerly geologist NZ Geological Survey, DSIR 1936-47; senior lecturer/reader/Professor and head of Geology, Canterbury University 1948-74, private consultant 1974-88.
Past councillor Royal Society of NZ; councillor, president 1964 Canterbury branch.
Publications include The Greymouth Coalfield (NZ Geological Survey, DSIR, 1952), Legends in the Rocks – Outline of NZ Geology (Whitcoulls, 1980).
Awarded Hutton Medal of the Royal Society of NZ 1974 for research.
Leisure activities include walking, reading, listening to music.
