Goss, Shirley Margaret Service Sheet 2014

Shirley Margaret Goss

19 JULY 1932 – 6 MARCH 2014

Welcome and Introduction

Prayer

Hymn: The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended

The darkness falls at Thy behest;
To Thee our morning hymns ascended,
Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

We thank thee that Thy Church unsleeping,
While earth rolls onward into light,
Through all the world her watch is keeping,
And rests not now by day or night.

As o’er each continent and island
The dawn leads on another day,
The voice of prayer is never silent,
Nor dies the strain of praise away.

So be it, Lord; Thy throne shall never,
Like earth’s proud empires, pass away:
Thy Kingdom stands, and grows for ever,
Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway.

Readings:
Micah 6:6 – 8
Matthew 5:1 – 12 (The Beatitudes)

Hymn: Praise with Joy the World’s Creator

Praise with joy the world’s creator,
God of justice, love and peace,
Source and end of human knowledge,
Force of greatness without cease.
Celebrate the Maker’s glory –
Power to rescue and release.

Praise the Son who feeds the hungry,
Frees the captive, finds the lost,
Heals the sick, upsets religion,
Fearless both of fate and cost.
Celebrate Christ’s constant presence –
Friend and Stranger, Guest and Host.

Praise the Spirit sent among us,
Liberating truth from pride,
Forging bonds where race or gender,
Age or nation dare divide.
Celebrate the Spirit’s treasure –
Foolishness none dare deride.

Praise the Maker, Son and Spirit,
One God in community,
Calling Christians to embody
Oneness and diversity.
Thus the world shall yet believe, when
Shown Christ’s vibrant unity.

Written on the occasion of
Shirley’s 80th birthday 19th July 2012

80 years
Showering flowers
On friends and strangers
Living a life
Of kindness
Reaching out, finding
The needy
Heeding the broken-hearted
Healing the wounded
Sheltering the homeless.
Shirley is aware of despair
and gives hope
She is happy being herself.
We count her amongst
The salt of the earth.
