PRESIDENT’S REPORT, 1975

I have pleasure in presenting this 25th Annual Report covering the activities of Greater Hastings during the past 12 months.  The merger with the Public Relations Department of the Hastings City Council continues to bring many benefits to our organization, particularly in the form of financial stability and access to the resources of the City Council by way of manpower, materials and equipment.  This was very apparent during the 25th Highland Games with the preparation of Windsor Park, and the facilities required for the many sporting activities.  In turn, the Secretary and staff of Greater Hastings have been able to assist in the duties of the Public Relations Office and we believe we are making a contribution to the overall Public Relations aspects of the City.

Staff:

I take this opportunity of welcoming the new Greater Hastings Secretary, Mr. Kim Wicksteed.  Kim commenced in January this year and had the most difficult task of preparing for the Games with very little experience of all that is involved in staging such an event.  I am pleased to say that Kim has been outstanding in his administrative capacity and a tireless worker in the performance of his duties.  The success of the 1975 Highland Games was largely due to him and on behalf of the executive and members of Greater Hastings, I extend our appreciation to him for the work, dedication, and long hours put in.

I would also like to express our most grateful thanks to Pam Atkins and Pam Shortland who were engaged in preparation work for The Games.  They had the very difficult job of handling the tremendous amount of detail involved and to assist the Secretary in the administration of the office.  I extend sincere appreciation for a job well done.

1975 Highland Games:

This was again the major promotion for the year and proved to be the best Games that had been held for many years.  As it was the 25th Silver Jubilee no effort or expense was spared to make this a truly fitting occasion, and I am pleased to report that record entries were received in virtually all events and a record number of spectators attended.

We were particularly honoured in having the Prime Minister, Mr. Bill Rowling to open the Games and both he and Mrs. Rowling took a keen interest in the sporting activities during their stay with us.  In spite of very heavy expenses the Games were again a financial success as the income and expenditure account will show, and although rising costs create many financial problems the Executive Committee decided not to increase gate charges, to enable as possible to attend.

Miss Highland Games Contest:

We congratulate the winner of this contest, Miss Karen Paul.  This contest proved be a valuable adjunct to the 1975 Highland Games and received wide appeal and support.  We trust Karen will have an interesting and worthwhile year with us as our 1975 Miss Highland Games.

Donations:

Greater Hastings made various donations to worthwhile causes during the past year which included $150 to St. John Ambulance for the purchase of a new type rescue stretcher and to the Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club for $50 to go toward winter training expenses.  Donations were also made to the following organizations:  Wesley Church Hall, Napier Dancing Society, Hastings Marching Club, Hastings Pigeon Club, Hastings Vintage Car Club, and the H.B. Sky Diving Club.

August Promotions:

At present the Executive Committee is planning Children’s Promotions for the August School Holidays.  Open Industries Week will be staged during the second week of the school holidays, with twelve industries taking part.  A two day children’s promotion will also be staged at Fantasyland during the first week of the School Holidays.

In conclusion I wish to thank all those who have given so willingly of their time and efforts in making Greater Hastings greater, over the past 12 months members of the Executive and Active General Committee.

JOHN LINDSTROM
President.
