GREATER HASTINGS NEWSLETTER   JULY, 1980

Dear Member,

Well our 30th Highland Games are over and we feel that they were a great success – of course we were blessed with such a good weekend weatherwise which does help considerably and such a large number of star competitors and visitors an added bonus.

Our very small Executive committee worked very hard and put in many long hours and I would like to personally thank them and everyone else involved either on Miss Highland Games Committee or any of the affiliated clubs for all their assistance and co-operation so willingly given over this very busy period. Special mention must go to Ian Condon our Treasurer who puts in many hours working out our budgets, finances, organising all gate monies and cash over Easter, our annual set of accounts and liases with City Council throughout the year – this is a voluntary effort on Ians part and very much appreciated.

To Apple Radio Staff – we thank you for all the extra you added to this Community effort – the Seven-A-Side Rugby League was very successful once again and our combined efforts with the Run for Fun created much interest and will possibly be run on an even larger scale next year.

To Eddy [Eddie] Hayes many thanks for all the research done on past Highland Games and also help and advise on many sporting matters and for once again coming to our aid with visiting competitors.

Once again our appreciation for all the sponsorships from the local sponsors – the small shops and businesses who stay with us year after year as well as our larger Sponsors such as Wattie Canneries and Leopard Brewery and of course Air New Zealand, without you all we could not continue to run these Games so successfully. The loan of such gear as Courtesy cars from Baillie Farmers, Caravans from Caravan & Marine, Motorbikes from Jack Burn Ltd., Trailers & tarpaulins from Noel Solomon Ltd. and many more items to make the Games run smoothly – these things are loaned to us in good faith and without hesitation every year – we truly appreciate all these community minded firms and people.

We had a very successful Miss Highland Games Contest this year and our special thanks to Bryan and Anne Hutchinson who were kind enough to offer their lovely home for our Cocktail function and to Margaret & Michael Pearse for putting on the Miss Highland Games Barbecue at their property in Algernon Road – these were highlights on our programme.

Our Judging Panel this year carried out their duties exceptionally well, our thanks to Mrs. Margaret Pearse (Convenor) Mrs. Anne Hutchinson, Miss Louise Strong, Mr. Barry Corbett and Mr. Dave Muir.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE – This netted approximately 140 new members and membership now stands at 436, we were of course hoping for a better response number wise but we do welcome all our new members and if you have any friends interested in joining up bring them along also.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – Wednesday 30th JULY – Angus Inn Conference Room 7.3

Although these meetings are said to be long and boring this is not the case and you will not be pressed into any unwanted positions so do come along and

support us, air your views and have a light supper with us – we would like to see a good turnout and explain what we would like to see happen for the coming year.

TOOWOOMBA – Carnival of Flowers – Our Miss Highland Games 1980, Tracy Simonsen will be leaving mid September to attend the Carnival Ball and Blossom procession as guest of Carnival of Flowers Assn. She will be accompanied by her mother and a representative from Greater Hastings.

We are also trying to organise a TOUR PARTY to take in Surfers Paradise, Brisbane and Toowoomba for the Carnival Procession and ask how many of our members would be interested in this trip with Air New Zealand. We enclose details and ask you to ring Public Relations Office if you are keen to join us – we would have to know by 6th August to get the Tour Party organised. Oliver Christoffersen of our Miss Highland Games Committee and ex-Executive member will be going along also.

Office Premises – The Executive have decided to shift Office Premises to rooms in Mr. R. Shakespeare’s office in Queen Street, as our present office space is so small – this move to be operative from August – we will let everyone know our new phone number as soon as possible but in the meantime we are still at the Public Relations Office – 69 001, and I shall be here until August.

Alexandra Blossom Festival – South Island. Are there any members interested in a trip to Alexandra at the end of September? This would be a 4-6 day trip. Please let us know if you are, and a Tour Party could be organised with sufficient interest and numbers.

Athletic Club – The Hastings Athletic Club have put forward a proposal for Greater Hastings to amalgamate with them in a joint venture with a Sports Complex to be built at Nelson Park, and various promotions to promote the full use of the All-Weather Track and new facilities. The Executive have given the matter serious consideration and at this stage although no definite moves have been made, we have written to the Club offering our support and interest in these proposals. Your views as members would be appreciated and our A.G.M. at the end of the month.

Public Relations Office – I should like to take this opportunity of thanking Mr Murray Pinfold, our Public Relations Officer, who has done his utmost to assist in the smooth running of this year’s Highland Games, and his staff, Shona Sullivan and Shelley Pickles who coped with their own work and Highland Games as well. They have all been a tremendous help and in such a small space I think we are very fortunate that everything worked so well.

New members who joined us during the year and who indicated interest in joining our committee or work party, please contact me at Public Relations Office before the A.G.M. and you can call in to fill out the necessary form. Don’t forget this is an opportunity to air your views or put forward suggestions or ideas to improve your Highland Games or new promotions – we look forward to seeing you at the Angus Inn on Wednesday, 30th July.

Cherio – till next edition,
Pam Atkins
