Born Wairoa, 22 August 1919, son of Matthew Leslie Guy Hallwright and Ethel May (née Pieremont); married (1) Hilda Minnie Mayborne Barrowclough, daughter of Frederick Gault Barrowclough, 1946 (diss 1965); (2) Mary Helen Wood, daughter of Frederick Roy Wood, 1966; three sons one daughter.
Education: Wairoa District School, Huntley School, Marton; Wanganui Collegiate School; Otago University, MB ChB 1941 (2 Medals): MRACP 1948, FRACP 1958, MRCP 1949, FRCP 1968.
RNZAMC: Egypt, Italy, Japan, 1945-1946 (Captain); Territorials: RNZAMC, 1953-1974 (Brig), incl CO, 2NZ General Hospital, Assistant Director Medical Services, Central Military Districts, ADMS, HQ; Director General Medical Services (Army), 1966-1972; first Director-General Defence Medical Services (Navy, Army, Airforce), 1972-1974; Col Commandant, RNZAMC, 1975-1980.
House surgeon, Medical registrar, Wellington Hospital, 1941-1948; postgraduate study work, London, 1949-1952; Postgraduate Medical  School, National Heart Hospital (RMO), St Bartholomew’s Hospital (Medical Professorial Unit); Wellington Hospital: Assistant Physician, Medical Tutor 1952, Visiting Physician 1953, Founder, Hypertension Clinic 1955-1985, Head of Cardiology Department 1960-1979, retired from hospital, 1985; last Sub-Dean, Wellington Branch Faculty of Medicine, Otago University, before it became a Clinical School of Medicine; Consulting Cardiologist, 1985 -; Cardiological consultant to Ministry of Transport, 1967-1990; Consulting assessor to insurance societies; Member, War Pensions Medical Appeal Board, 1988 -; NHFNZ, 1967: Joint Founder 1967, Former member, Scientific, Management Committees, National Council, Former Chairman, Wellington Regional Committee.
