COMMUNITY FORUM ON HASTINGS (NEW ZEALAND) – GUILIN (THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA) INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:

The Hastings-Guilin ‘sister-district’ link was forged in March 1981 following visits to Guilin Municipality by the late Dr D W (Don) McKenzie as early as 1977. The connection was a historic first for New Zealand and China, and has been sustained and developed over the last eleven years. Activity has been quite diverse involving Mayor/Council level exchanges; a horticultural technician placement scheme; an English-language teacher placement scheme, other educational interests via pen pals, artwork and a high school tour party; tourist groups; private individual and business visits; the facilitation of information exchange over a wide field; plant and seed trials; promotion of public knowledge and awareness; the provision of English-text books, and planning for two Exhibitions : Pottery (1991) and Maori Artifacts (1993). As well the Hawke’s Bay Chinese community, the Hawke’s Bay Chinese Association, and the Hawke’s Bay Branch of the New Zealand-China Friendship Society, have all played a strongly supportive role to the sister-districts.

Your organisation has shown support, interest or involvement in some way over these years, and the Hastings District Council is most appreciative of this.

I am keen to further build upon and develop the Hastings-Guilin bond, not just for its own sake, but believing also that the South Pacific and Pacific Rim should, and will, play a crucial part in the future of our nation: economically, politically and culturally.

To this end I want to facilitate a wider knowledge of sister-district matters, and of the Guilin Municipality in particular, and to explore ways and means of further enhancing links between Hastings and Guilin.

You, or your representative(s) are warmly invited to accept the invitation enclosed with this letter.

This occasion will be co-hosted by the Mayor’s Office, the Hawke’s Bay Branch, New Zealand-China Friendship Society, and the Hawke’s Bay Chinese Association.

Yours sincerely
JP Dwyer
