“GUILIN FORUM”

Dear Bryon (or representative)

Thank you for your help with or your interest in the recent Guilin Evening. It was a most pleasant occasion with many commenting on the friendly and positive atmosphere prevailing – quite apart from the wonderful cuisine.

Up to a dozen people have come forward since that night to express their interest in joining the Guilin Forum.  I do not want to let the idea get cold, so I am approaching you now to follow up on your initial or your potential interest.

Let me re-explain the concept.

The Guilin Forum:

(i)   A Council-Community partnership to ‘ideas-drive’ an inter-change programme;

(ii)   To be informal;

(iii)   Administrative and implementation to be provided by the Community Services Division of the Hastings District Council responsible for Guilin Matters;

(iv)   To meet at least once, not more than twice annually;

(v)   Venue: Mayor’s Office (Hastings District Council)
Timing: 4.00pm on a week day (2 hours maximum);

(vi)   Purpose:

“To review the Hastings-Guilin relationship; to consolidate existing links; to spark new initiatives; to plan and monitor a proposed annual/triennial Programme.”

“To lift the relationship to a new tier of inter-change and achievement between 1992 and 1995.”

Those who have so far come forward for the Guilin Forum would see the following interests represented:

The Hastings District Council (elected members and management)
The Hawke’s Bay Chinese Association
The Hawke’s Bay Branch, New Zealand-China Friendship Society
Education
The Hawke’s Bay Cultural Trust
Tourism
Primary Production
Commerce
Maoridom
Service Clubs.

It is my intention to hold our first gathering following the Hastings District Council Goodwill Delegation’s return from Guilin, and no later than mid-September 1992. This will enable the latest developments from Official Talks to be reported back to the Forum.  I will be pleased to host you socially at the conclusion of our first gathering.

A note of meeting date, time and venue will be sent to you shortly.

Please find enclosed a copy of the Guilin-Hastings Information Pack. This provides the essence of the Protocol, history and current programme.
