Mr. Penlington was the club’s first President, a position which he held until 1929. In 1930 he was elected Patron, and still holds that office. He has always displayed interest in the Club, and is well known and respected by all Old Boys. We here express our thanks and appreciation for his interest in our affairs, and wish him many happy years in which to enjoy his well-earned retirement.

FOREWORD

Twenty-five years ago, the Hastings High School Old Boys Football Club had its beginning. Small, rather uncertain beginnings they were, and the members were young and inexperienced: but the first members knew, even then, that they were starting something which was destined to take a prominent place in Hawke’s Bay Rugby.

Year by year, Old Boys would give the Club not only their physically fit bodies but also the disciplined training, good sportsmanship and decent standards of conduct which are the tradition of a good secondary school.

During the war years, the Club like many others, was forced to reduce its activities. that was not really a set-back, but rather a cause for pride that so many of its members were measuring up to what was after all the supreme test of man- hood. We honour the memory of those who never returned to take the field again and to live out their lives in their own land.

The Club deserves to be complimented on the sound type of men whom it has chosen througout [throughout] the years to be its leaders: to their fine influence and example is largely due the high reputation which the Club has always held. the boys of the High School regard Old Boys with a particular affection, and their contests together are always full of that special zest which comes of good natured rivalry between old friends.

It is a great pleasure to have the privilege, on behalf of the School as well as for myself, of congratulating “Old Boys” on their very successful quarter of a century. May their prowess increase, and their reputation flourish for many years to come.

W.A.G. PENLINGTON.

HISTORY OF THE CLUB

Towards the end of the summer of 1923-24, many of the ex-High School boys began to think of the Football Club for which they wished to play. One of the lads, Jack Chapman, had thought of playing for the Rovers Club, but on finding out that his friend had decided to play for another, brought forward the idea that had been at the back of his mind since leaving school, that of forming an Old Boys’ Club. He talked it over with his friend, Dennis Little, the friend mentioned, and Jim List, and owing to their encouragement continued, with their help, to sow the seed amongst other Old Boys. At this stage the school was on the upgrade, and Old Boys were naturally desirous of maintaining their association with the school. Naturally, they turned for guidance to the principal, Mr. W.A.G. Penlington.

They quickly made their appointment, but when the time had arrived for the interview, their entry to the Head’s study was made with reluctance as of old. However, it was not long before Mr. Penlington had them at their ease, and they were soon explaining their project. the result was that when they left they had authority to advertise a meeting, and charge the cost to Mr. Penlington.

And so there appeared in the local paper on March 5, 1924, under the heading of “Hastings High School”, the following notice: – “A meeting of those interested in the formation of an Old Boys Football Club will be held at the High School at 7.30 pm. on Friday, 7th inst. Ex-pupils of the Hastings District and Technical High Schools, will be welcomed.”

It is interesting to note that the school had undergone two changes in name, from Hastings District High School to Hastings Technical High School, and then to Hastings High School.

The meeting was held at the school, not at the fine school that we have to-day, but in the old brick building which came down in the 1931 earthquake. Although the

Page Eight

BOYS SILVER JUBILEE 1924-1949

attendance was disappointing, only ten being present, all were very enthusiastic about the project. It was decided to advertise the first Annual Meeting for a fortnight later. Ivan Martin was elected secretary pro. tem.

On the March 14, 1924, therefore, the first Annual General Meeting was held, and again the attendance was very poor. Mr. Penlington presided, and the following were elected as the first officials of the Club: – Patron, A.E. O’Meara; President, W.A.G. Penlington; Vice-Presidents, M.E. Wood, Dr. Johnston, R. Holt, K. Ross, H. Brenton-Rule; Club Captain, J. Chapman; Vice-Captain, W. Horton; Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, I. Martin; Management Committee, Club and Vice-Captains, Hon. Secretary and P. Webb and B. Jones; Delegate to the Sub-Union, K. Ross. then began the debate on the colours, and again Jack Chapman comes into the picture. His proposal for Navy Blue jerseys, after much discussion, was thrown out. the suggestion for school colours with white trousers was rejected in view of the probability of school teams playing in the same grade as Old Boys. (the school first fifteen, in those far off days, played fourth grade, and the teams they played against made them look very small). A suggestion to reverse the two colours of the school jerseys, and a proposal for red and white were considered, but they were both rejected. During all these suggestions, Jack plumped for navy blue jerseys, and Mr. Penlington had to remind him that the proposal had been voted out. Jack finally suggested Navy blue with the addition of a white collar, and after much argument, he was finally supported. the Clubs registered colours thus became All Navy Blue, White Collar, present School Badge with OB. worked into the jersey underneath the badge. It was a very satisfied lack Chapman who was afterwards told by Mr. Penlington that he should have been a lawyer. It was further decided to enter one team in the third grade competition, and to register the club as the Hastings High School Old Boys’ Football Club.

And so ended the first Annual Meeting. the founders were very satisfied with their night’s work, although it was not until later in the season that they realised how much work was still necessary to put the Club on a sound footing. Football practices took place on the School ground, which was then the area still being used by Central School as their playground. As the bicycle shed was placed near the swimming baths, no trouble was experienced by the players in scrambling over the iron fence and enjoying a most refreshing swim after practice. Enthusiasm was maintained up to the week of the first match.

The team so far consisted of only ten or twelve, for some of those on the list of members decided to continue with a club that was already established, rather than transfer to one that might “fizzle out.” However, the core of the team was enthusiastic, ever on the lookout for players. the result was that a reasonably good team was fielded, and not once did it default any of its engagements, even if the old manual telephones, and the exchange, often worked overtime before a full team was mustered.

On April 12th 1924, the first team, in the glory of new colours, and captained by Percy Botherway walked on the field at Nelson Park and played their first game, against Heretaunga. Amid great excitement, on the part of the team, they won by six to five. Cyril Barclay scored the first try, and Jack Chapman the second. In later matches Joe Townsend was the first to convert a try, Percy Botherway potted the first goal, and Jim Symons kicked the first penalty. the team won their first three games, and a full team was assured. They often had to travel to Napier, and it was not unusual to read an advertisement that the team had to catch the 1.30 pm. train. (What, no bus? Not in those days).

Although they had been beaten in the majority of their games, and twice by M.A.C., it did not deter them from challenging that team for the Sachs Johnston Shield. The match was played on the 27th September, at the Ridge (now occupied by the Memorial Hospital), and despite the barracking of the M.A.C. supporters and cries of “No pictures or pies” (see “Incidents during 25 years of football”) Old Boys won by 15-3. Thus in our first year we had our name engraved on a trophy, and made a successful entry into Rugby.

The next year saw the committee right on the job, and as a result there was a large attendance at the Second Annual General Meeting. The most important decision at this meeting was the nominating of three teams, Junior, thirds and Fourths. From the local paper of March 7, 1925, we read, “The Hastings High School Old Boys’ Club is apparently bent on increasing its prestige, and the club’s affairs are in the hands of a most energetic set of Officials.” In the sports notes of March 14, we read, “The H.H.S.O.B. are blossoming out and intend to run three teams. the club membership has very largely increased, and the members are all as keen as mustard. Some of the more burning enthusiasts are already training hard and there is a very fine spirit abroad in the Club.” (As the first game was not played until the 18th April, some indication of the keenness may be gained).

An extract from the Sub-Union’s Annual Report reads: “H.H.S.O.B. have certainly shown enterprise in launching out after their modest opening season, but if they have the players to back their optimism more power to them. With a strong School team to draw on year by year, they should be on a good wicket in a few seasons.” During this season, the teams in each grade did well, all being runners-up. the junior and lower grades representatives included Old Boys, in particular Percy Botherway, who gained Hawke’s Bay honours in the junior grade. He gained this honour each year that he was a junior. When he was classified a senior, because we did not have a senior team, he played for Hastings, but returned to us when we entered Senior rank.

In 1926, owing to the increase in membership, it was necessary to enter two third Grade teams. In the Hastings junior grade we tied with Hastings. the play off was a draw, 11 points all, after extra time had been played. Our thirds A won the Hastings Championship and the Sachs Johnston Shield, the Fourths were again runners-up in their grade. In those days, some of the matches were played on the Racecourse which meant postponement for Fourth grade matches on race days. (We think it might have been better to postpone the games in the higher grades). In 1927 we were criticised in some quarters for entering two junior teams. However, the B team, consisting of promoted thirds, were heartily congratulated on their wins by the A’s, whom they defeated by 5-0, and 11-10. The BS were competition runners-up, the A’s being next on the list. the thirds lost their first two games, but after that they settled down and finished the season as runners-up. the Fourths were again runners-up in their grade.

With the success of a dance held in 1926 still fresh in their minds, the committee instituted the First Annual Ball in the Assembly Hall in June, 1927. It was successful in every way, and from that time became the major social event of the Club.

At the Fifth Annual General Meeting held in 1928, the most important subject of debate was whether we should enter a Senior team. After a lengthy discussion it was decided not to enter a Senior team, but to carry on for one more season as a junior Club. We placed a strong team in the junior Grade which won all its games, and gained the Hawke’s Bay junior Championship.

The thirds did not do so well in their grade, but in the 7-a-side tournaments were able to win the Central Hawke’s Bay, and Hawke’s Bay Championships, and with the Fourths,

Page Eleven

HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL OLD
BOYS SILVER JUBILEE 1924-1949

were first equal with Taradale for the Home Trophy at the Footballers Sports Meeting. It is interesting to note that the events consisted of 100 yards running, wrestling, goal kicking, hop, step and jump, passing bout, tug of war, 880 yards, drop kicking, putting the shot, 220 yards hurdles, dribbling and a relay.

In 1929, the club entered Senior ranks, and now had teams in all grades. Five new players of Senior experience, Percy Botherway, who returned to us, and promoted Juniors made up the team. The write up in the press after the first game was, “The light Old Boys team gave quite a good showing against the heavier and more seasoned team.”

Thirds and Fourths were runners-up in their grade, the Juniors went down a peg, being satisfied with third place. The only success in this season was the Hawke’s Bay B-grade 7-a-side championship. The third Annual Ball was a complete success.

Because of the progress made by the club during the six years of its existence, it was necessary to relieve the Secretary of some of his work, and a new position of Treasurer was created at the Annual Meeting. Although we had small success on the field, we had great success as a club. An extract from the report presented to the 1930 Annual Meeting read, “1929 has been the most successful in the history of the club. Throughout the season a most happy spirit has reigned, and this has been a big factor in the Club’s success.”

In the 1930 season all teams enjoyed a certain amount of success. The Seniors, although they did not do very well in the competition, reached the final of the Lane Cup competition, and the Juniors were able to win the Hawke’s Bay championship for the second time in three years. The thirds won the Hawke’s Bay Championship for the first time. They also won the Horne Cup for the footballers’ athletic meeting, and the Hawke’s Bay Seven-a-side Championship. Again there were surplus players, and these were absorbed in a second Third Grade team. Because the name “B team” suggested a second best, the team was called “Akina”, and wore pale blue coloured jerseys. The spirit in this team was in keeping with the Old Boys’ tradition, and although only one game was won, they came through smiling. The Fourths were once again runners-up in the Hastings Competition.

In 1931, came the earthquake of February 3rd. The territorials under Sgt.-Major George O’Leary were on duty most of the day and night, and a number of Old Boys were members

Page Twelve

HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL OLD
BOYS SILVER JUBILEE 1924-1949

of the Unit. Despite the dislocation of normal activities, it was possible to hold the Annual Meeting in March.

The Senior team did not find a place at the top of the ladder in the competition, but did manage to win the 10-a-side trophy at a tournament in Napier, and with the Juniors won the Maddison Trophy at the footballers’ athletic meeting, while the Thirds and Fourths won the Horne Cup for the same events. The Juniors were runners-up in their grade, while the Thirds won the Hastings competition but lost to Napier in the play-off for the championship honours. The Fourths won the Hastings competition for the first time, but they were narrowly defeated in the Hawke’s Bay final.

The social side was also a success. The fifth Annual Ball was held in the Drill Hall, the only one available, and dancing space was at a premium. The decoration committee, consisting of Les. Andrews, Doug. Graham, Ed. Renouf and many helpers did a great job, and the Drill Hall regained much of its old-time splendour.

In 1932 the change in scrum formation took place, and the 3-2-3 scrum was adopted. Neither the referees nor the players were conversant with the new rules, and our wing forward, Len Heaton, became a lost sheep, and when Celtic played the 3-4 scrum and used an extra “fly-half” it was a proper Paddy’s market. However, all difficulties were overcome. The Seniors won the Hastings Championship but lost the Hawke’s Bay final. The Juniors and Thirds won the Hastings championships in their grades, and the Thirds won the Hawke’s Bay title for the second time. The Fourths were at a low ebb in this year, but they met their defeats to the end. The Seniors also won the 7-a-side tournament at Waipukurau, and the Club won the Frazer Cup for goal kicking.

During this year, George O’Leary became our first Life Member (see “Life Members.”) In the early stages of the season, the Drill Hall was used for physical training and for tactical practices. The wind-up of each season took the form of a Smoke Concert, and this year it showed a profit of one shilling and twopence, a very healthy balance in comparison with that of former years.

During all these years, the committee had been keeping the affairs of the Club in good shape, and in 1933, the incorporation of the Club was suggested but it was thought that it was too early to think about it. Doug Graham suggested that a record of the Club be kept, and as a result a sub-committee, consisting of Tom Grace, Les McDuff, Horace Norton, Ed.

Renouf and Les Andrews went into the matter. (More information on this subject may be read elsewhere).

On the field, the Seniors and juniors had a lean time, but when the juniors journeyed to Dannevirke to compete in the 7-a-side tournament, they won the Hannah Shield. The Thirds won the Hastings Championship, and also the Carnaby Shield at the 7-a-side at Dannevirke. These two wins at Dannevirke were the first registered by teams outside that district. The Fourths were still building up, and finished fourth in their competition.

The Fourths were still building up, and finished fourth in their competition.

In 1934, the Seniors marched on to the field wearing, among other things, white shorts for the first time in the history of the Club. However, it was not until 1939 that white shorts were incorporated in the colours of the Club, and all grades changed accordingly. It was also in this year (1934) that numbers on Senior jerseys became a recognised part of their equipment. A cup for the most improved player in the School was donated by the Club, and Tom Grace had the honour of making the presentation to the first winner.

The Seniors won the Lane Cup, which was worked out on a percentage basis in the second round, and were joint winners of the Hastings Sub-Union title. Les. McCarthy, in this season, was the first player in the Sub-Union to score 50 points by goals, and was also head of the most points scored for the whole of the season. In an interesting write up on the Seniors after their match with Eskview the heading was “A ‘Talkie’ Match on Both Sides.”

The juniors won the Hastings Championship and the 7-a- side tournament at Waipukurau, but failed in the Hawke’s Bay final. The thirds covered themselves with glory by winning all their matches, the 7-a-side championship at Waipukurau, and the Hastings Sub-Union and Hawke’s Bay Championship. From the sports notes of 14th July, 1934, came: “A remarkable record has been established by the Old Boys’ Third Grade team, who in their 9 games to date, have scored 209 points and on Saturday, for the first time this season, they had

Page Fourteen

HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL OLD
BOYS SILVER JUBILEE 1924-1949

three points (a penalty goal) scored against them. “The Fourths were still struggling and had to depend on outside players to keep going.

The following year, 1935, the Juniors were the only team to gain success, viz. the Hastings Championship. It was pleasing to have the Fourths back in the position which they held during the first years of the Club, that of runners-up. On the administration side useful recommendations were adopted. Mick Murray introduced the Club Benefit scheme for which many Old Boys have been thankful. Reg. Colwill presented a Shield for competition among all the teams of the Club. Points for this Shield are awarded on the basis of attendance at practices, neatness in appearance before going on the field, and conduct on the field. Friendly games during the week-ends were arranged for the Seniors against Waikare and Puketitiri.

In 1936 the Fourths won the Hastings Championship, but were defeated by Technical College Old Boys in the Hawke’s Bay final. The Thirds had an off year, and were not placed. The Juniors won the Hastings section, but they, too, lost the final with Napier. However, they won the knockout competition, defeating in the final the team that had won the Hawke’s Bay championship. The Seniors still lacked weight in the forwards and did not gain a high position on the ladder. In the Lane Cup match with Hastings, the day was wet and miserable. When time was called, the score was 5-all and extra time had to be played. The match was called off after it had been in progress 110 minutes. The Club in this year became joint winners with Technical Old Boys for the Black and White Shield. It was in this year that a Club Blazer was approved, the minutes reading, “The blazer to be blue, with buttons, blue bone. The badge to be of the same design as the School badge with bird in blue, on green bough, scroll yellow, lettering in blue, background white.”

In 1937 the Seniors won the seven-a-side tournament in Waipukurau and the Juniors, the Hastings and knockout[knock-out] competitions. It was not an outstanding year.

In 1938 many Juniors were promoted to Senior grade, and the team won the Lane Cup. Most of the retired Seniors took on refereeing, while one, Otto Jonson, took on the coaching of the Fourths, a position which he still holds to-day[today]. The Thirds and Fourths won the Hastings Championship. The Club was second to Nuhaka in the Black and White Shield. This was a very wet year and senior matches were sometimes played on the Polo Grounds. An addition to the Officials for 1938 was a

Page Fifteen

HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL OLD
BOYS SILVER JUBILEE 1924-1949

social secretary, whose work was the direction of the Club’s growing social activities. Honorary membership was also instituted.

In the 1939 season, the Seniors won the Corbett McKnight Shield for the 10-a-side competition, the Thirds the Hawke’s Bay and Hastings Championships, and the knockout competition, and the Fourths, for the first time in the history of the Club, the Hawke’s Bay Championship and the Hastings Sub-Union Championship.

During all these years, friendly games outside the district were confined to the Seniors, but now Otto Jonson decided to take his Fourths away. As most of the lower grade players did not enjoy enormous salaries, ways and means were devised to take care of their travelling expenses, and enough was raised to take them to Palmerston North. To-day all grades have some arrangement whereby annual games are played in Wanganui, Palmerston North, Feilding and Gisborne.

In the 1940 season the Thirds and Fourths again won the Hawke’s Bay and Hastings Championships. Two members were elected to Life Membership, Bill Lockhead and Ed. Renouf. The Club contributed £200 to the National War Loan.

In 1941, a paragraph in the local newspaper read, “In looking over the possible strength of the Clubs, one is immediately struck with the potential strength of Old Boys. Strong in the lower grades for many seasons, and firm in the belief that Juniors of to-day are the Seniors of tomorrow, the Club’s executive has always followed a system of promoting their own. The fruits of this policy will be more apparent this winter, when the military demands will necessitate constant changes in the team personnel. No Club will be in a position to meet this demand better than Old Boys.”

The next four years were war years, and when many players joined the Forces, Rugby was confined to players under 18 years of age. This was later amended to 20 years. In 1942 and in 1943 we entered two teams in the restricted Senior grade and in 1941, Seniors, Juniors and Junior Colts. In 1945, the age restriction having been removed, we entered Seniors, Juniors and Thirds.

The Annual Meeting of 1946 brought the Club back to pre-war strength. After an absence of many years familiar faces were again seen amongst the very large attendance. Some, we regret, had not returned. Four teams were again entered in the competition. The Fourths were a very strong team, and won the Hastings Championship, losing only one

Page Sixteen

HASTINGS HIGH SCHOOL OLD
BOYS SILVER JUBILEE 1924-1949

match throughout the season. The Thirds were runners-up in their grade, and the Juniors won the Hastings Championship. The performance of the Seniors was as inconsistent as of old. They were runners-up. The Club won the Black and White Shield. The Annual Ball and the fortnightly dances were revived.

A Club Field Day was instituted, the events including kicking, dribbling, passing and finishing with a relay.

In 1947 the growth of the Club and its assets made incorporation necessary and a joint Hon. Secretary was elected to share the administration work.

The Colts won the Hastings Third Grade Championship, the Thirds being runners-up and the Juniors again won the Hastings Championship. The Seniors were again a model of inconsistency, and were runners-up in the competition. The Fourths entered another lean period, but their morale was as high in defeat as it had been in victory. The Club again won the Black and White Shield.

In the 1948 season, the Seniors won the Lane Cup competition, and with Hastings were joint holders of the Hastings Championship. This year the Lane Cup competition was played on an inter-town basis, and made the competition most interesting. As the inter-town problem was not settled, the Juniors were not able to play for Hawke’s Bay honours, but won the Hastings Championship. The Colts won the Third Grade competition, and added the knockout[knock-out] competition to their credit. The thirds filled third position on the ladder. The Fourths were still cheerfully making the grade.

At the Annual Meeting, Otto Jonson was elected a Life Member and brought the total to four.

The Annual Ball was the most successful since pre-war years.

And so on to 1949, the year of our Silver Jubilee. We have travelled 25 years, and although bad years as well as successful ones have been encountered, the foundations laid were sound and strong enough to resist any adversity. The Club was built on enthusiasm, and, as we honour the founders, we have no fear for the future of the Club, if every one of us is bound to it with the same loyalty as were those earlier members.

The Hastings High School Old Boys’ Football Club can look to the past with pride in achievement, and to the future with high hopes for continued success. “Akina.”

LIFE MEMBERS (S.I.J.)

During the twenty-five years of its life, the Club has jealously guarded the honour of Life Membership, and has conferred it on only four members. Although the only rules governing the conferring of the honour are of a “machinery” nature, viz. that it must be recommended by the committee, and adopted by a general meeting, there has been evolved an unwritten policy, which we hope will be favoured for many years. Briefly it is that the extent of the service to the Club is the only qualification. Age has no bearing on it. During the Club’s history, comparatively young men have given, and are still giving outstanding service, and why should recognition of their service be deferred until they reach the “sere and yellow”?

The Life Members of the Club are Messrs. G.P. O’Leary, W.R.T. Lockhead, E. Renouf, and O. Jonson, all of whom have richly deserved the honour. The details of their service which follow do not tell the whole story, but for the sake of the record, here they are: –

Member of Club, 1926/1932. President 1930/1931. Sub-Union delegate 1927/31-32, Committee member 1932. Club Coach 1928/1930. Senior Coach 1931/1932. Third Grade coach 1926/27. Life membership 1932. It might well be said of George O’Leary that whatever he undertook he endowed it with energy and enthusiasm, and because of these outstanding qualities, which he still possesses, the Club attained a very sound position during his presidency. Hastings will long remember his work during the earthquake period, and when the was transferred to Wellington the community as well as the Club sustained a great loss. Before he left, the community presented him with an illuminated address, and the Club made him its first Life Member. George, now Lieut.-Col. G.P. O’Leary, is still going strong, and the Jubilee would not be complete without him.

Member of the Club from 1933/1939. Club Captain 1936/1939. Vice-Captain 1935. Sub-Union Delegate 1934/1939. Junior Coach 1935. Third Grade Coach 1933/1934. Life Membership 1940. Bill’s departure from Hastings was a severe loss to the Club. As Club Captain, he displayed tactfulness in great measure, and kept the Club working in harmony. He was also a member of the Hastings Sub-Union and the Hawke’s Bay Management Committees, and was Junior Selector for Hastings and the Hawke’s Bay representatives. His interest is still as keen as ever, and when visiting Hastings he always makes a point of renewing acquaintance with us.

Member of the Club since 1925. Club Captain 1940/1947. Hon. Treasurer 1931/1938. Member of Committee 1928/1930-1939-1948/1949. Senior Coach 1938/1939. Junior Coach 1936/1937. Player for Thirds 1925/1926, Juniors 1927/1932, Seniors 1933/1935. Life membership 1940. Ed. is still with the Club, and is still doing good work. It is not too much to say that it is owing to Ed’s work as treasurer and as a member of the committee that the club’s financial position is so sound to-day[today]. As Club Captain he was always on the job, and zealously promoted the interests of every Club team. He has served continuously since his election to the committee in 1929, and to us it looks like a life sentence, as well as Life Membership.

Member of the Club from 1925. Member of Committee 1936-1938/1939-1947/1949. Fourth Grade Coach 1938/1941-1946/1949. Played for Fourths 1925, Thirds 1926, Juniors 1927/1928, Seniors 1929/1937. Life Membership 1948. Otto’s outstanding work has been amongst the younger players, and from the day he put aside his playing boots he has been coach and father to the fourths. The Club will never want for young players as long as he is there to welcome and encourage them. It can also be said that the success of the dances owes a lot to his genial manner as M.C. He was a member of the first Senior team, and holds the playing record of the Club, having played for 13 years During the war he was on service for five years, but returned to his old job with all his former enthusiasm. May he never grow old.

MR. PENLINGTON’S RETIREMENT
We take this opportunity of wishing our Patron many happy years of well earned leisure. We also welcome Mr. J. Tier, who has succeeded him as Principal of the School.

PROMINENT PLAYERS

Our readers, we hope, will realize that to single out certain players is a somewhat delicate task, but we feel that the list which follows will be approved by all Club members. We know also that those mentioned below had no thought of themselves as individuals, but only as members of a team.

Club Captain 1933. Vice-Captain 1925/1927. Committee member 1929/1932. Senior Coach 1933. Played for Thirds 1924, Juniors 1925/1927, Seniors 1929/1932. Percy will always be remembered as a great player, and a most modest one. As a Captain he was a splendid leader. He was a Junior Hawkes Bay representative in the years between 1925 and 1927, and because of his ability a player was classified as a Senior in 1928. As the Club did not enter a Senior team until 1929, Percy played for the Hastings Club, but returned to Old Boys the following year, and captained the first Old Boys Senior team. He represented Hawke’s Bay while playing for Hastings and in all the years following until his retirement in 1932. He took up coaching for a season, and his sound knowledge of the game was most useful to us. He went overseas during World War II, and paid the supreme sacrifice.

Committee member 1934/1938. Played for Juniors in 1932, Seniors 1933/1938. Edgar’s career was a most spectacular one, and only lack of weight prevented him from gaining All Black honours. Members and Rugby enthusiasts will recall for years to come the exploits of the two Bay wingers, Edgar and Charlie Smith, players quite different in style, but always a constant menace to the opposition. Edgar was in the Bay Junior team in 1932 and represented the Bay Senior team from 1933 to 1938. He was also in the All Black trials of 1935, and North Island Possibles versus Probables match in 1934, and the North Island team of 1935. His appointment to a position in the Northern Territory of Australia in 1939 severed his active membership, but today his interest in the Club is still as keen as ever.

Vice Club Captain 1948/1949. Hon. Secretary 1941/1942. Treasurer 1939/1940-1949 and Committee member 1934/1938-1947. Played for Seniors 1932/1939-1941. Les. came from Central Hawke’s Bay to join the Club in 1932 and soon made himself known to players and spectators by his accurate goal kicking. Distance did not make any difference, and on a number of occasions he kicked goals from inside his own half. During his nine years as a player he scored 632 points from 33 tries, 120 conversions, 95 penalties and two field goals. On two occasions he passed the 100 mark in a season, in 1937 scoring 107 points and in 1939, 111 points. He played anywhere from five-eighths to full back, but in later years he played as a spare forward, and made a success of it. Les. is now doing good work as an administrator.

Club Captain 1929/1930. Vice Captain 1928-1933. Sub-Union Delegate 1932/1933. Committee member 1925/1927-1931/1932. Played for Thirds 1925/1926, Juniors 1927/ 1930. Doug was a most capable administrator as well as a very sound player. He always had the respect of his team mates, and his early work and interest in the Club’s affairs will be gratefully remembered. As a team Captain he proved himself an admirable leader, and by his judgment and tact could always get the best out of his team.

Other players who helped the Club to gain recognition are: – W.G. (”Bunny”) Palmer, Ron Devine (both killed on active service during World War 11), Johnny Varton, Roy Natusch, Laurie Clothier (during the war years) and John Horton.

CLUB REGISTER

This register, which contains every team and its records, Club officials, and the names of individual players, is a striking testimony to the foresight of its proposer, D. Graham, and to the sub-committee consisting of Tom Grace, Les. McDuff, Horace Norton, Ed. Renouf and Les. Andrews, which did the job of buying the register and deciding the manner of keeping it up to date.

The Club is proud of its record of loyalty and patriotism. No less than 186 past and present members served their country overseas.

PROMINENT ADMINISTRATORS

No organization can function successfully without keen and enthusiastic officials, and in this respect the Club has been well served. Our records show that many of our officials served or have served for long periods and only the demands of space preclude a fuller review.

Vice President 1931/32 and President from 1933 to the present time. Universally known as “Jonah” his interest in the Club has [has] always been keen, and he has been the natural link between the Club and the School. During the earlier years of his Presidency, he took a very active part in the progress of the Club, but during the war years he undertook many responsibilities which he still holds, and so he has not been able to give the club as much time and energy as he did formerly. However, his interest in us is just as keen and he can always find time to discuss any aspect of Club policy. He will not accept the theory that his presence at Nelson Park adversely affects the result of the senior match. During its life of 25 years, the Club has had only three Presidents, and Jonah has filled the position for 17 years.

Club Captain 1924/1928. Played for Thirds 1924/1926, Juniors 1927. Jake, as he was always called, was one of the foundation members of the Club, and as a player and administrator in the first few years of the Club’s existence gave outstanding service. He worked hard to form the Club, and it was due to his enthusiasm and energy that the Club was able to become established in the first year. We feel sure that if he were still in Hastings, he would still be working for us.

Hon. Secretary 1933-37 and in 1943. Committee member 1939. Vice-President 1942. Played for Fourths 1930/1931 and for Thirds 1932. His years as Secretary were arduous ones, as he had to attend to the details of the Club’s social activities as well as the general business. It was at his suggestion on his retirement in 1937, that the office of Social Secretary was instituted. His interest in the Club was clearly shown during the war years, when he gave valuable assistance as Vice-President and later as Secretary. Les was the fifth secretary, and like his predecessor, Frank Crawford, set a high standard of efficiency.

Hon. Secretary 1944-1946/1949. Committee member 1942. Senior player 1942/1949. Hugh is our present secretary, and is a great asset to the Club. Only he knows how much of his time he devotes to the Club throughout the year, and it is not too much to say that he regards the work as his particular hobby. He has the happy knack of getting on with his fellows and on the football field there is no harder working forward.

M. MURRAY.   Mick was very interested in the Club. His claim to fame is that he was the promoter of the Club Benefit Scheme, a scheme for which many members have had reason to be thankful. His transfer from Hastings was a distinct loss to us.

H.F. NORTON.   When the office of Social Secretary was instituted Horace was the unanimous choice for the job, and subsequent events proved that he was the right man for the job. He always was a glutton for work and he set a high standard in social activities. He has been a member of the Executive Committee for many years, and this year has the responsible position of Chairman.

W. LASSEN.   Following in Horace’s footsteps. Dick has proved to be another find, and most of the success on the social side in recent years is due to him. As with Hugh Campbell, the Club is a hobby with Dick.

The following officials must be mentioned-Secretaries, FRANK CRAWFORD (5 years) and OWEN DENTON (3 years). Club Captains JIM SYMONS (2 years) and TOM GRACE (1 year). Committee members, JOHN CATER (2 years), ED. CALLAGHAN (6 years) and SELLY McCARTHY, who has given service over a period of 13 years, and with DAVE THOMPSON (9 years) also acted as coaches. Delegates to the Sub-Union JIM SEED (12 years). He has also been Club Vice Captain for 10 years and is a member of the Sub-Union Management Committee), L. McGAFFIN (4 years) and RON SHAKESPEARE (3 years). MR. J. REDWARD, a Vice-President for 16 years, respectfully known as “Pop”, has given unstintingly of his professional services to club members since 1934. Ill health in recent years has curbed his active interest in the Club. His two sons, John and Gordon, were invaluable in the social activities of the Club during the “thirties”. They are best remembered for their song “Kafoozelum”, which they composed themselves.

BOYS SILVER JUBILEE 1924-1949

INCIDENTS OVER TWENTY-FIVE YEARS

1924
Cyril Barclay scored the first try for the Club by being in way of Jack Chapman, who pushed him on to the ball. Incidentally. Cyril, in his four seasons of Rugby, was not mentioned again as scoring. He needs pushing. The reward for M.A.C. if they won a match was pies and pictures, but if they lost they had to return to the College immediately after the match. Hence the cry “No pies or pictures” from their barrackers. Our team that first played in Napier had only fourteen men. The fifteenth, a pick-up from Paki Paki, found that he had lost his ticket and got off the train at Tomoana. Is that an Old Boys’ trick? Gregg Cassin always seemed to complain about a sore back whenever the game was a hard one, and consequently was misunderstood by the others. Later his complaint was diagnosed as arthritis, and an operation was necessary. Jack Chapman recruited players over the counter of his father’s grocery store. Were there butter coupons in those days?

1925
Sports note, May 30th: – “The hitherto unbeaten Old Boys Junior team met their first defeat at the hands of Celtic. They were not altogether satisfied with the decision that lost them the game, but should know better than to cavil at the referee’s decision.” What about it, team?

1926
Jim Symons deserved the try which he scored for the A Thirds against the B’s, but it was described as “flukey.” Is that so, Jim? Frank Schroeder scored four tries in the match against Hastings. Hence the song, “Little man you’ve had a busy day.”

1927
Lofty Graham in pursuit of Otto Jonson, when the latter streaked for the line to score the only try in the match, A v. B, was like the song, “Run, Rabbit, Run.”

1928
The Junior final between Old Boys and Pirates, which we won to gain the Hawke’s Bay Championship, was nearly lost when Henry Nairn, an ex-Old Boy, who was playing for Pirates, potted a goal, and made the score 5-4. Henry always did give us a fright, even when he played for us.

1929
An unusual event-Our B’s forfeited their game. However, this team later withdrew from the competition. Ed. Renouf was adjudged the most useful player in the team, and earned the medal presented by Mr. P. Going. And Ed. is still going.

1930.
Otto Jonson, 11st. 4lbs. and Rev. Wanoa, 15st. Tamatea forward, collided in their game. No one got the ball, Otto got a fright, Wanoa was laid out. David and Goliath!

What happened, Juniors, when you won 9-3, but lost the match through playing a Senior player? Naughty, naughty.

1931
…Monk had the penalty craze. In each of the first four matches played, he kicked a penalty, but in the next match missed “sitters.” However, the next two games saw him again kicking goals.

Les. Andrews, Doug Graham and Ed. Renouf were responsible for the decorations at the Annual Ball, and the entrance into the Drill Hall was through a marquee portico with carpets on the ground leading from the roadway. What one will do, when not playing football.

1932
Phip Graham ran 75 yards in the game against Celtic, kicked over the head of the full back and gathered in the ball, which bounced just right. One of those footballer’s dream scores.

1933
Members of this year, do tell us about the walk to Cape Kidnappers on the 9th April. Get your breath back first, of course.

Les. McDuff, were you playing for Hastings, when you crossed their line after a good passing rush, and then let the ball slip out of your hands as you went to force it? Still, don’t lose any sleep over it; it’s still being done today.

What a “kick” the Juniors and Thirds must have had when they won the 7-a-side tournament in Dannevirke. They were the first visiting teams to win the trophies.

Bill Read scored 22 points out of the total of 47 in the match against Hastings. The art of kicking.

Ed Renouf played as an extra man in the scrum against Celtic. He must have surprised the opposition as much as he surprised his fellows. Handy man all round.

Edgar Apsey made a pretty move when he stole a pass from the Hastings backs and set off for the Hastings goal line. Morrie Dyer made a pretty move, too; he pounced on Edgar and dumped him. Cat and mouse?

The opposition (Napier H.S.O.B.) were 8 points, we were nil. Phip Graham scored right under the posts, Les. McCarthy took the kick and missed. Edgar Apsey scored a try right under the posts. Phip took the kick and missed. Otto Jonson was given the ball to force, but he let it slip through his hands, and missed the try. Was it a put up job?

1934.
Frank Sharpley won the Limbrick Cup for the second year in succession at Waipukurau.

Johnny Varton, when playing for Hawke’s Bay against Canterbury, was “conspicuous by his white gloves.” Anything to say, John?

Les. McCarthy was another back to play in the forwards and made a good job of it.

Edgar Apsey potted a great goal, the crowd cheered, but the referee, Doug. Graham, did not see it. He had slipped and was too busy picking himself off the ground. However, Doug. was pleased to see us finally win.

1935
Perhaps Ed Renouf can tell us the truth about the ball which he was supposed to have lost from the car in which he was returning from Napier. Nothing but the truth, please.

What a day when it was said that Otto Jonson for once outshone his club mate Edgar Apsey. Paper talk, no doubt.

John Taylor, a junior, playing for the Seniors, “magnetised the greasy ball and his handling evoked admiration.” Sticky fingers, eh, John.

Hec. Holt worked the blind side on the goal line, halted, and evading a determined tackle by a complete turn, dropped over the chalk line and scored. An acrobatic try.

1936.
Horace Norton could, no doubt, give us some interesting dope on the 60 yards of cloth bought at l/- a yard which was made into table cloths. Any profit, Horace?

In the play off with Napier, our Thirds were not feeling their best, and Jack Gadd arranged to have a rest by feigning a knock. The opposition made it real, and Jack actually was hurt, but the spectators who were in the know thought that Jack was putting on a real good show, and were loud in their praise of his acting. Where were you hurt, Jack?

Les McCarthy, Hec. Holt, Otto Jonson began a passing bout in their own half, and continued down the field passing the ball about between the side-line and the five-yard line, and finished up with a try by Hec. Any size field will do.

Merv Ashman played half-back, and made a great job of it. Another donkey man in the team wouldn’t do us any harm.

Les McCarthy raised a laugh amongst the spectators when he decided to take a kick 65 yards out, but it changed to applause when the ball sailed between the uprights.

1938 The Seniors’ ball was lost at the back of the stand at McLean Park, Napier. The habit still holds; “they” are still doing it.

JUNIORS, 1946, WINNERS HASTINGS JUNIOR COMPETITION.
Back Row:   C. Helleur, D. Macaulay, K. Sleeman, W. Persen, P. Nesbit.
Middle Row:   L. Hodgson, R. Ferguson, G. Harding (Capt.), K. Sant (v-capt.), R. Botherway, W. Lassen.
Front Row:   J. Jones, J. Simpson, G. Instone. Absent: A. Wedd, A. Condon, W. Wattie.

Duke Wairoa will probably never forget his embarrassment when he was kicked during the match at Palmerston North, and a lady spectator asked where he was hurt. Did you tell her, Duke?

Eric Garnett “had the dive pass to perfection.” The Senior team had the reputation of being punctual on the field at all times. Afraid, boys?

Les. McCarthy had five attempts at goal and missed the lot. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

When the Seniors had a bye Merv. Ashman spent the day running in the Harriers race, and actually won his division. Puff, puff, puffing along the highway.

Bunny Palmer is “entitled to be regarded as the Hastings Express.”

1939
Jack Catherall has cause to remember an incident in which he and the referee were the leading stars. Remember, “Severely cautioned,” Jack?

Les. McCarthy’s stand-down week was referred to as “sending a carpenter to a job without a hammer.”

Mick Thomson would have scored a try against Havelock North if he had used his hands instead of his stomach to force the ball. A low down trick, Mick.

Jno. Alexander brought off a determined tackle with the referee as the victim. Good practice, anyway.

As we were four backs short, Otto Jonson, who retired in 1937, helped out against M.A.C.

In the Third Grade representative trial match there were 13 Old Boys. In the Fourths trials, there were 14, including two who were made captains of their respective teams.

1940
Against Technical Old Boys, the Blue forwards were like the old grey mare, “not what she used to be.”

Ralph Kitt had nine shots at goal, and was successful with 8. Good kicking, Ralph.

Blue Callaghan, the former N.S.W. and Wanganui representative, and Australian reserve, appeared in the front row, and in the first spell consistently outhooked the opposition, but in the second session, the referee caught him more than once lifting before the ball was in.

Bill Howard made his entry into Senior ranks with two fine tries. Try, try again.

The Fourths final game for the Hawke’s Bay Championship was remarkable for the fact that three parts of the game had been played before scoring commenced although the opposition were never out of their own territory. The game finished in our favour, 12-0.

1941
Frank Sharpley 18 won the 110 metres hurdles in Egypt, but could not claim the Championship honours owing to his not having resided there for a year.

Although Horace Horton made a fine run, he delayed his pass too long. Remember when you are coaching, Horace.

1945
Laurie Clothier was the mainstay of the Senior team, and his generalship was evident at all times.

We were 5 points behind and Doug. Reeves wanted to make honours even. He was well across the line, but wanted to score behind the posts. Therein he erred, for he was tackled in goal and lost a sure try. Three points first, Doug.

Ron Dewson learned his lesson when he thought the ball had gone out, and did not make any attempt to stop play, but the opposition was quick to take the opportunity, scored and won the game. Next time, eh, Ron?

Dave Thompson is “a solid rucker and works like a tiger at all times, while club mate Johnny Horton takes a lot of beating in the open.”

Laurie Clothier initiated a passing rush, and both Bill McGavock and Doug. Reeves made piercing runs before the latter sent out a difficult long pass that Keith Taylor took magnificently with one hand and raced over.

Sam Tong provided an excellent all round display this season. “His field work is above the average and he is quick to seize an opening through which he flashes with plenty of speed.”

JUNIOR TEAM, 1925.
Back Row:   Mr. Thurlow (Referee), F. Cleary, J. List, R. Cushing, G. Heighway, R. Nimon, A. Honeybun, D. von Sturmer.
Middle Row:   R. Colwill, I. Johnston, C. Foster, P. Botherway*(Capt.), F Crawford, V. Morley.
Front Row:   G. Bower, J. Ritchie, J.W. Scott, F. Donnelly.
*Killed on Active Service.

Laurie Clothier delved into his “bag of tricks” and gave a display that was reminiscent of his heyday.

1947
Johnny Johnson was tackled low when he crossed the line, and as he fell he spun around, landed on his back, turned over, and brought the ball to earth, his feet still being in the air. A touch down standing on his head.

Gordon Harding against Celtic turned on a good display. “Always dangerous when in possession. he is quick to find an opening and has developed a nice side step.”

Paddy Nesbit came to light against Waimarama and made three excellent tries.

Des. Rae against Te Aute “gave a good display of defence work, his tackling being excellent.” After he retired hurt, 16 points were scored by the opposition.

1948
Heard from the side line after Murray Sparling had scored, “Gee, the last time I did that was when I was in the primers.” Everything takes time.

Ray Cash found his shorts slipping away from him as he was about to take a pass. He took the pass one handed and at the same time dragged the descending shorts back to their former position. After running a few more yards he again got into difficulties when he had to fend off a defender, but again retrieved his shorts and eventually scored. Phew, what shorts!

Johnny Simpson an ex-Old Boy, did a hard day’s work for Havelock North, and it was not for want of trying that his team was beaten by Old Boys.

EDITORIAL NOTE

By the publication of this Souvenir Booklet, the time and patience required to delve into a period of twenty-five years has been fully rewarded.

It has always been my wish that a book recording events of interest should be available to past and present members, and I trust that this publication will meet with their approval. There will be errors and omissions, and it is with this in mind that I include a perforated page in which you may record those errors and omissions, and then forward the page to Otto Jonson, c/o. P.O. Box 379, Hastings. By this means I hope to have on record a history that will be of assistance to those who will write up Jubilees of the future.

In conclusion, I should like to say that without assistance this task could not have been achieved, and I wish to express my thanks to the proprietors of the Herald-Tribune for their co-operation, to my committee, to the ladies who assisted with the typing of the copy, to the host of Old Boys who forwarded information and photographs, and last, but not least, the printers for their helpfulness.
Hastings, 14th May, 1949. O. JONSON.
