Hastings City Council

WELCOME TO HASTINGS

Once again it is my privilege and pleasure on behalf of the citizens of Hastings to extend to you all a very sincere welcome to our City on the occasion of the Nineteenth Highland Games. The people of Hastings join with me in wishing you a happy Easter and a pleasant holiday in this beautiful City of ours.

We are justly proud of the great name the Hastings Highland Games has throughout New Zealand and overseas, and I would like to take this opportunity of again congratulating Greater Hastings upon their very fine efforts in promoting and organising this popular annual event.

Not only are the Highland Games recognised as the “Braemar of Australasia” but also as a popular three – day meeting where the cream of New Zealand’s athletic talent competes.

I know you will enjoy your holiday in our City and I hope that you will return to us next year.

R.V. Giorgi
Mayor.

GREATER HASTINGS

Approximately six hundred, or eighty per cent individual competitors at our Nineteenth Games come to us from districts beyond Hawke’s Bay.  To these people and their friends particularly it affords me great pleasure to extend a special welcome to the Hastings Highland Games. As you compete in your individual sports, I would ask you to spare a thought for the officials conducting your event who give of their Easter annually, and extend credit to their Hastings organisations, for without the services of these community minded groups it would be impossible for Greater Hastings to organise these wonderful Games.

To sponsors of various events, advertisers, business houses, organisations and individuals too numerous to name, I offer a special thank you for your continued support – a community effort of such magnitude as our Games would be impossible without you.

The extension of our 1969 programme to include a family concert, dance and rejuvenated Sunday programme, I know will have the support of all.

Finally to Executive, Active General Members, our Convenor, Mr. Russell Robertson and Secretary, Mrs. Moira Draper, I offer my personal thanks for the enormous contribution of each and every one of you.

A happy Highland Games to all.

Yours sincerely,
GEORGE KEARNS,
President, Greater Hastings.

ARCHERY

Standynge, Nockynge, Drawynge, Holdynge, Loosynge – from the goodly exercise of these cometh fayre shootynge.
ROGER ASCHAM – TOXOPHILUS (1545)

This is as true today as it was 400 years ago and you will find that the archers who follow these points are those who will be closest to the top in the final reckoning.

Archery is primarily a participator sport, to the spectator it lacks the excitement of 100 yards dash or the 14″ standing chop, to the contestants the excitement is there. There can be no falling off in concentration throughout the entire shoot and many shoots are quite literally won with the last arrow.

To help you understand more fully what you are watching, here is a brief explanation: –

A given number of arrows shot over a single distance or a number of distances is called a round. (On Saturday an American round of 30 arrows at 60 – 50 – 40 yards.)

These are divided into lots of 6 called ends and at the completion of an end the archers go forward to the targets to score their arrows and then return to shoot another end until the full number have been shot.

The target is 120c.m. in diameter, the zones are of equal width and it is placed with the centre 4ft above the ground. Scoring counts 9 for a gold (not a bullseye), 7 red, 5 blue, 3 black and 1 white. In the event of a tie for first place the archer with the greatest number of golds wins.

The man or woman blowing the whistle is the Field Captain.  His word is law and his duties include stopping and starting the shooting, deciding the scoring values of any disputed arrows on a target and generally seeing that the shoot continues without interruption.

In extending our greetings to all competitors and visitors to the Highland Games we wish them every success and an enjoyable time while in the Bay.
May we remind you of the part we too can play on this occasion by offering a large range of items suitable for souvenirs, mementos and gifts.  Many no doubt will be seeking a way just to say a thank you to a friend or someone who has helped somehow, someway, sometime.
You could say it with flowers, but you could not say it nicer than with a gift purchased from the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’.  To make your task easier you could consider our gift voucher scheme.

GREATER HASTINGS proudly presents

NEW ZEALAND’S PREMIER PIPING EVENT

THE COMUNN NA PIOBAIREACHD (NEW ZEALAND) COMPETITION

The Eleventh Annual Competition of Comunn na Piobaircachd (New Zealand) Inc. will be conducted at Greater Hastings Highland Games at Windsor Park on Easter Saturday 5th April, 1969.

The winner will receive the Comunn na Piobaireachd Gold Medal, the Highland Society of London Trophy (to be held for one year) a cash prize of $20, and the Ian Cameron Challenge Cup. There will be a second prize of $12, and a third prize of $6.

ADJUDICATORS

The Adjudicators will be Messrs. D. Bain, Ashburton, and N. McKay, Auckland.

“Piobaireachd” is the name given to the classical music of the Highland Bagpipe.  It is a highly developed form of music which had its beginnings in the 16th Century and was brought to perfection by the famous MacCrimmon family of Skye.  It consists of a theme or ground work followed by variations, and has always been regarded by the expert piper as the highest expression of his art.  Piobaireachd calls for years of careful study, and has won admiration from musical experts of many countries.

Comunn na Piobaireachd (New Zealand) Inc.. was formed to foster and encourage the study and playing of Piobaireachd in New Zealand, and has the unique distinction of being affiliated with the Piobaireachd Society of Scotland.  The latter society was formed in 1903, and enjoys Royal patronage.  It is concerned with maintaining the traditional standards in the art of Piobaireachd playing, through the publication of its collections of music, and arranging of classes of instruction, the provision of judges for the major competitions in Scotland and the maintenance of the Army School of Piping at Edinburgh Castle.

The most coveted awards among pipers in Scotland are the Highland Society of London’s Gold Medals, awarded each year for the playing of Piobaireachd in competitions held at Inverness and Oban under the control of the Piobaireachd Society.  The Highland Society of London was formed in 1778 for the purpose of stimulating interest in Highland Culture, and instituted the first competitions in piping in 1781.  The Highland Society of London has presented a silver statuette of a piper to Comunn na Piobaireachd (New Zealand) Inc., as a trophy for its competition, which it thus linked with the first competition is held in 1781, and with those now held at Inverness and Oban.

The Gold Metal of Comunn na Piobaireachd (New Zealand) Inc., was designed by Mr. George Bain, an eminent authority of Celtic art.  It shows a piper of the period 1745 when pipers carried arms and played an instrument with two drones instead of the present three.

A Grade Board – Saturday

Adjudicator: MR. D. BAIN, Ashburton

Mr. Bain was originally taught to play bagpipes in the Ashburton Pipe Band at the age of 12 years, and has been an active solo competitor since the age of 16 years.  Mr. Bain has won all the major piping trophies in New Zealand including the Comunn na Piobaireachd Gold Medal at Hastings in 19605 He was also a member of the 1 Armoured Car (N.Z. Scottish) Regiment Band when it won the A Grade Championship at the Dominion contest in 1960.

In 1966 Mr. Bain travelled with his family to Scotland to further his knowledge of piping. He went to Glasgow and for two years until November 1968 he received weekly instruction from Pipe Major Donald MacLeod.

Mr. Bain competed extensively in Scotland and with considerable success.  Some of the highlights included Oban in 1967 where he won the Strathspey and Reel and was runner – up in the medal competition. At Inverness the same year, he won the Marches, Strathspey and Reel competition and in 1968 he was the first winner of a new medal for Piobaireachd struck by the Royal Highland Games at Braemar.

Associate Judge: MR. N. McKAY, Auckland
(For Event 1 only)

Neville McKay now resides in Auckland and is well known to the foremost piping circles of New Zealand and the United Kingdom.  He has a very successful competitive record in Solo Piping and lived for some years in Scotland where he received tuition from the most notable authorities in the art.

Such was his ability that he was featured in the prize list of the classic events of Scottish Piping competitions and became Pipe Major of the Aberdeen City Police Pipe Band.

His studies of Scottish culture have prompted demand for his writings on Highland music generally and Gaelic aspects in particular.

WEIGHT LIFTING COMPETITIONS

Kindly Sponsored by: UNILEVER N.Z. LTD.   10 a.m. – 12 p.m.   2.30 – 4.30 p.m. SATURDAY

Officials and Stewards:
Referee: Mr. J. CULLEN, Auckland
Judges: Mr. B. MAHONEY, Wellington, and Mr. R. WHITE, Napier

1st prize $8.50 and Highland Games Gold Medal, 2nd prize $6.50, 3rd prize $4.50 in each section.

Event 1 – HANDS PRESS: Bar is taken from the ground to chest in one movement, and then pressed to arms length without any movement of arms, back or feet.

Event 2 – 2 HANDS SNATCH: Bar is taken to arms length in one movement from the floor by splitting or bending legs.

Event 3 – 2 HANDS CLEAN JERK: Bar is taken to shoulders by moving or bending the legs.  Lifter regains upright position and then jerks weight above head with the aid of his legs.

WEIGHTLIFTING NOTES

The following notes are included for the purpose, briefly, of conveying to the general public some idea of the procedure adopted in a contest such as this.

A weightlifting contest is held on three lifts, called the two hands press, two hands snatch and two hands clean and jerk.

Each contestant has three attempts at each lift, his best lifts being added together to give him total.

Under normal circumstances a weightlifting contest is held between contestants competing in their own bodyweight division, such as bantam – weight, heavyweight, etc. similar to a boxing or wrestling contest.  However, the contest to be witnessed here is between men ranging in body – weights from 8st. to 17st., so that it is obvious some handicapping system must be used.

A handicapping system has been devised for contests such as these, called the Austin Formula

This system gives a decimal figure to correspond with every different bodyweight, a larger one for the lighter man and a smaller one for the heavy man.  The decimal figure is multiplied by the total the man lifts, the highest figure being the winner.  For instance. Brown, weighing 15 stone, may total 7001bs, which is multiplied by .5 which equals 350.  Jones, weighing 150lbs, may total 600lbs, which is multiplied by .6 which gives an answer of 360.  So although Jones did not lift as much as his opponent he wins because he has done better per ratio to his bodyweight.

The completion of all lifts must be the lifter standing erect and holding bar above head at arms’ length with feet not more than 15″ apart.  This position must be held until referee gives signal to lower.
