PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Music is playing an increasingly important part in the school lives of children, and instrumental and percussion work, together with movement, is now supplementing most school programmes. As a result, many children are being introduced to a wider field of musical experience and our Festival presentation is broadening to include items apart from choral work. It is the hope of all teachers involved, that experiences gained in the day to day musical work and participation in this festival, will encourage those who take part to extend their musical interests after leaving school, and so strengthen the organisations in the community which add so much to the cultural side of our lives.

The Hastings Primary Schools’ Choir has a fine tradition and it is pleasing to note that some of the participants are sons or daughters of choir members of earlier days.

Much of the work involved in the preparation of the concert is done by teachers and children during lunch times and after school, and I wish to record my thanks to them for their enthusiasm, without which this presentation would not be possible.

Miss K. Coles, our conductor, has again spent much time and energy in taking practices of the Massed Choir and the Special Group. Associated closely with Miss Coles in frequent practices has been Mrs, J. Anyan, the accompaniste, and these ladies are to be complimented on the standard of work produced. On behalf of the Committee, children and audience, I offer sincere thanks and appreciation.

Much of the organising and planning has been in the hands of Mr. R. Newson, our secretary, and he also is deserving of thanks for his work which has been carried out most efficiently.

This performance could not take place without the co-operation of Head Teachers and class Teachers and I wish to record my thanks to all those who have helped to produce this final result.

I trust that the enthusiasm of the children will be equalled by the enjoyment of the audience.

H. D. AITCHISON,
President.

THE SCOTTISH SOLDIER.

Because these green hills are not Highland Hills,
Or the island hills are not my land’s hills,
And, fair as these green foreign hills may be,
They are not the hills of home.

THE TARTAN.

Then it’s “hey” for the Tartan,
And “ho” for the Tartan!
The stamp of the Highlands, from Skye to Dundee.
And it’s proud I am bearing,
The Tartan I’m wearing,
The pride of my Clan,
And the Tartan for me!
