The Hastings West School

EDITORIAL

When a school reaches the mature age of 50 years it is an easy task to compile a full and accurate story of its beginnings, growth and attainments, but with the aid of the “log” we have endeavoured to give you a moving picture of your old school over its first fifty years – 1914 to 1964.

We hope that February 1964 will be a most memorable occasion for the Hastings West School – now Raureka – and all its old pupils that gather in Hastings to celebrate the Jubilee. To many it will be a thrilling experience to return to old haunts and meet old school teachers and class-mates. Many familiar faces sadly enough will be absent, but we trust that this booklet will in all revive happy memories.

Change and progress are inevitable and so, many, returning to Hastings after long absences, will see great alterations in the buildings in Gordon Road. However, they will, we know, be proud that the foundations of the school – tradition, education and character building – were well laid by headmasters, teachers and committee men in the past.

May the children of the present generation and the generations to come treasure this heritage, and worthily continue to uphold the good name of our old school.

The Official Opening of the School – 16th April, 1914

BEGINNINGS

In 1907 the need for a school in the western part of the town of Hastings was advocated by Mr. Geo. W. Warren, and he brought it to the attention of the Hastings School Committee (Central School). He enlisted the support of the local residents and settlers and urged that some early action be taken.

About 1912 his efforts began to bear fruit, and the co-operation of Mr. Geo. F. Roach was secured. Mr. Roach was the Middle Ward member of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board and largely due to his efforts a site of 41 acres, with frontages on Gordon Road and Oliphant Road, was ultimately secured.

The next move, to obtain a grant from the Education Department, caused considerable delay and many frustrations. With the persistent efforts of Mr. Roach and the local member, Mr. H. M. Campbell, a grant of £850 was approved for the purchase of the property.

The contractors, Messrs. Duncan & Abbott, erected the school of four large, airy classrooms, porch and shelter shed, with all conveniences for £2508 and the school was then second to none in the Dominion.

The initial expenditure was as follows:
£
Site   1050
Buildings   2508
Architect and Plans   125
Furniture   250
Apparatus   50
£3983

To meet this the Education Department gave grants of:
£
Government Grant for Site   850
Government Grant for Building   2776
Grant – Education Board   257
Citizens’ Contributions   100

OUR STORY

Surely this is a school of names, for it began the Mahora South School, and to quote the first entry in the “log” – February 10th. 1914:
The Mahora South School opened in the marquee erected on the school grounds, Gordon Road, Hastings.
Roll No. 178; present 175 pupils.
Staff:   Miss Gorman, Mistress
Mr. Whibley, Assistant Master
Mr. G.K. Sinclair, Headmaster.

It is interesting to note the first report of an Inspector to attend the school on the 27th February, 1914.

Mahora South, new school. This was opened in a tent on the Mahora South site on February 10th.

The tent is 63 feet by feet and is divided into two, so as to separate the classes. 6, 5 and 4, from the lower portion of the school.

Mr. Sinclair, formerly Headmaster of Clive, is the Headmaster and is in charge of Standards 6, 5 and 4.

The assistants are Mr, Whibley, Standards 3 and 2, and Miss Gorman, Standard 1 and the preparatory Classes. Up to the present date 185 pupils have been admitted and on day of my visit 175 were present. For the two weeks ended February 19th the average attendance was 177.

At the present the teaching is being carried on under very difficult conditions as to accommodation, appliances and staffing. Further help should be supplied without delay as the Mistress cannot possibly instruct so many children as are under her charge, and the time of the little ones is being wasted. About 30 children sit outside without any work to do and they are told to look at some object or pictures pending the chance visit of the Mistress from her other classes. No help is possible from either the Headmaster or Assistant Master as their classes are over-full and are working under difficult conditions.

An additional Assistant or preparatory teacher or probationer are urgently required.

W.H. HILL,
Inspector
27th February, 1914

Page 9

On the day Of Mr. Hill’s inspection Miss Gorman had 74 of her 80 pupils present, Mr. Whibley was teaching of his roll of 48, and Mr. Sinclair had 56 pupils present, and the number on his roll was 57.

On the 17th February the school was visited by the Hon. M. Allen, Minister of Education, and party. It was apparent there was an acute shortage of staff and during the first month, Miss F. MacVicar, Miss Rich and Miss Goddard were added to the staff.

The staff settled down in June of the first year with Mr. Sinclair as Headmaster teaching standards 6 and 5, Mr. Whibley standards 4 and 3, Miss Susan Wellwood standards 2 and 1, Miss Gorman preparatory, Miss Goddard probationary assistant.

By the end of the year the school roll had grown to 235.

As soon as the school was satisfactorily established arrangements were made for the erection of a suitable building, and this was completed and officially opened on the 16th April, 1914.

At this important function, Mr. W.P. Lascelles, Chairman of the Mahora South School Committee. presided, and the following official guests were present along with a large gathering of parents and well-wishers.

Mr. H.M. Campbell (Member of Parliament)
Mr. G.F. Roach (Member of Hawke’s Bay Education Board)
Mr. W. Hart (Mayor of Hastings)
Mr. G. Crawshaw (Secretary, Hawke’s Bay Education Board)
Mr. J.S. Miller (Chairman, Hastings School Committee)
Mr. A.M. Robertson (Chairman. Mahora School Committee)
Mr. L.F. Pegler (Headmaster, Hastings District High School)
Mr. W.T. Chaplin (Headmaster, Mahora School)
Messrs. G.W. Warren, R. Wellwood, G. Purvis and R. Hay (Mahora West School Committee).

Mr. Lascelles, in welcoming the gathering on behalf of the School Committee, remarked that the day marked an outstanding step forward in the progress of the district. The growth of the town made it imperative that a further school should be erected in the town and district. Mr. Lascelles paid a tribute to the early efforts of Mr. Warren and Mr. Roach.

Mr. Purvis appealed to the residents and settlers to contribute to the fund to complete the purchase of the site.

Other speakers were Mr. H.M. Campbell and Mr. W. Hart. Mr. Campbell officially declared the building open, and visitors inspected it.

About the time of the official opening the first election for a school committee took place, and the following were elected:
Mr. J. A. Campbell (Chairman)
Mr. R.A. Wellwood (Secretary)
Mr. Geo. Ebbett

Page 10

The building was built in brick and plaster, and in the longer wing were three classrooms and the smaller wing one room and connecting corridors. The school bell was renowned for its loud clamour and could be heard far and wide. Subsequently, it was purchased by the Hastings Fire Brigade and erected in a high tower with an electric clapper, and could be heard over the larger part of the town.

The building was subsequently added to When a large classroom was added to the main wing and two further classrooms on the smaller Wing.

In February 1916 a few cases of diphtheria were reported and some teachers were declared contacts. The epidemic worsened and the school was closed from March 23rd till April 26th and again from July 3rd till July 26th.

No sooner was the school declared clear of diphtheria than severe floods in the town reduced the attendances at the school to the 70 mark.

During 1916 the school became known as the “Hastings West” school to differentiate it from the Mahora North School, and this name remained until it was later changed to “Raureka School”.

In 1922 a social was held in the school by old boys and old girls of the school and an association was formed to arrange reunions, but there is no further record of its activities, and it would appear that our Jubilee is the first full reunion of pupils and teachers.

During May of 1923 a visit was received from the Education Board and the School Committee to investigate the overcrowding of pupils as classes had to be held in the corridors, etc. The deputation was convinced that there was urgent need for additions to the present buildings and, on March 24th the following year (1924), the school moved to the Hastings Racecourse while alterations and extensions were carried out.

A large classroom was added to the main wing and two further classrooms to the smaller wing, much of the brickwork was renewed and further plastering was done.

During this first stay at the racecourse the staff and pupils worked under extreme difficulties in their temporary premises, and because of the novelty of the surroundings teachers found that discipline and behaviour deteriorated considerably. It was not until July of the following year that the remodelled school was ready for occupation and, with a holiday for standards 3 downwards on July 8th, the remainder of the pupils and the teachers moved to the new Hastings West School.

Also in 1924, on May 9th, the whole school was closed to enable pupils to inspect the British naval vessel “Hood”. It was a long thrilling day. Teachers were on deck from 5.30 a.m., and all pupils old enough to make the trip were assembled in the railway station at 6 a.m. and entrained for Port Ahuriri. It was a cold and long journey. On arrival there [they] all were filed into small vessels which sailed from the Iron Pot out into the roadstead and circled the “Hood” and returned to port. Although the pupils only saw the mighty battleship from some 200 yards the experience altogether was the thrill of their lives. All were returned safely to land even though the “Fanny” leaned at about 30 degrees to port throughout her circuits of the “Hood”. Lunch was eaten in a wool store, and the return trip to Hastings brought the staff and pupils home in the early afternoon. Certainly a historic day in the life of the school.

When resumption after the summer vacation was to take place an epidemic of infantile paralysis was rampant throughout the

Page 12

country and no schools opened. Instructions were issued prohibiting gatherings of children, and arrangements were made for the teachers to attend refresher courses and the teaching of all pupils was carried out by correspondence. School ultimately began on the 2nd March.

The remodelled school was not without its difficulties and the failure of the hot-water system to maintain a suitable temperature in the classrooms made teaching a bitterly cold and miserable business and many of the pupils suffered in consequence. The committee and the staff made urgent representations to the Board to have matters rectified and over a protracted period these were completed.

Again in 1925 the school did not open at the beginning of the year owing to a further epidemic of infantile paralysis throughout the whole of New Zealand. It did not resume until the 19th April and in the interim teachers again attended refresher courses and conducted instruction of pupils by correspondence.

Later in that year, on the 6th October, the Governor-General Sir Charles Ferguson visited the school and declared a half-holiday for the occasion. Pupils also attended at Cornwall Park the following day to pay respects to him.

During 1926 an epidemic of diphtheria occurred between June and October, when twelve cases were reported. Two children, Hector Carlton and William Maddison, died in this epidemic. There were several visits of the health officers for inspections and throat swabbing, and separate classrooms and the whole school were disinfected at various times. In November inoculations were begun by the School Medical Inspector, Dr. Clark.

It is interesting to note that on the 25th March, 1930, a practice for emergency fire and earthquake drill was held, when the whole school was completely evacuated in thirty seconds.

On the 28th March the school baths were officially opened by Mr. G.A. Maddison in the presence of a large gathering of parents and friends.

These baths were named the Harding Baths and have proved a valuable adjunct to the sporting and training facilities of the school as well as being a centre for swimming enthusiasts and children in the district. On the occasion of the official opening a most successful programme of races was run off and many of the winners were presented with medals which had been donated by parents. The girls’ championship 25 yards was won by Flora Struthers and the boys’ championship by Herbert Ballantyne.

During 1930 there began a spate of class visits to factories and industrial organisations, and this showed a change in the general pattern of teaching of that day. Places visited included dairy factories, Watties Canneries, poultry farms and orchards.

On the 3rd Of February, 1931, after school had only been resumed one day, the Hawke’s Bay earthquake badly damaged the buildings and some of the brick walls fell out. It was fortunate that none of the pupils was hurt and the teachers admirably cared for the children at this distressing time. Like all other organisations and businesses, the school was automatically in recess and the children were not called together again until February 16th when all class instruction was carried on in the open air. Providentially the weather was fine and warm for five or six weeks after the earthquake.

The Chairman of the Education Board recommended that some of the classes move to Ebbett Park. This plan did not work

Page 14

out as the water and sewerage mains were completely inadequate for the classes meeting there.

The school continued to work in the open as repairs to the classrooms progressed, and on wet days there was no school at all. After consultation with the inspectors, the standards were transferred to the Hastings Racecourse buildings on April 10th while Miss Satchell continued with the primers in two detached rooms at the school. Repairs were completed by August when the buildings in Gordon Road were occupied on the 6th, and the official opening was attended by a large crowd of parents and well-wishers two days later.

There was talk in 1933 of building a new school and rough sketches were recorded in the school log and floor lay-out was agreed upon. It was not until mid-1934 that a comprehensive plan was made of the grounds and schemes drawn up to give the property a new look. The scheme included removal of old fences, the wattles and gum trees at the rear of the buildings, and the macrocarpa trees at the very back of the grounds. Smaller trees and shrubs were to be planted, the baths were to have a suitable fence erected around them, the football field was to be ploughed, levelled and resown, and part of the horse paddock was to be taken into the school garden.

Photo caption – Earthquake Damage to East Wing – 3rd February, 1931

Page 15

All these things were completed before the end of 1935 and the macrocarpa trees, which had been such a feature of the West School since its first days were no more. Also the “horse paddock”, a most integral part of the early school and the scene of many a lark, was doomed. This was the cost of progress, palms were planted along either side of the driveway from the main entrance to the front door of the school.

The School Savings Scheme was begun in September of 1934 and has steadily grown from its small beginnings and has done much to encourage saving among pupils. In 1937 the school was closed during March owing to a further epidemic of infantile paralysis. Also in this year the telephone was installed and daily milk delivery begun. During 1938 there was again a shortage of accommodation at the school and standards 5 and 6 resorted to meeting in the Hastings Racecourse for instruction.

Club activity and afternoon for free expression were introduced in 1942 by the new headmaster, and also the use of “houses” for stimulation in sporting and other cultural activities. To improve the cricket practice a concrete cricket pitch was in the grounds.

It was also during this year that emergency precautions were organised and a full scheme of dispersal was arranged according to the pupils’ residential zones. The staff and senior pupils were made responsible to carry out practices and teach code signals.

A hospital site class was established in 1943 and attached to the school and a special teacher appointed to look after it. This was an added responsibility for the headmaster, but it insured that education of pupils confined to hospital was not affected adversely.

The school was again closed for a month at the beginning of 1949 through a further infantile paralysis epidemic, but resumed on the 1st March.

Owing to inadequate accommodation for the increased pupils of the school, two classes were meeting in the Hastings Racecourse. During the next twelve years the increase in population in the school district made it evident that one school could not satisfactorily accommodate and teach the pupils in prospect, and the Education Board made plans for the establishment of other schools in the area. In 1951 the new Frimley School was Opened and 71 of the Raureka pupils were transferred to it. Then again in 1954 the Hastings Intermediate School was established and catered for all the standards 5 and 6 pupils. Raureka was one of the contributing schools to the Intermediate School, and 130 children were transferred.

Page 16

In 1960 the Wall Road School commenced, and again 90 pupils from Raureka enrolled there. Owing to the growth of the school during these periods classrooms were used at Mahora in 1952 and at the Racecourse in 1953, and pupils were transferred there by bus daily.

In 1953 the school enjoyed a great number of successes in the sports field, especially in Rugby football when the school teams won a large proportion of their Ross Shield matches. Their success was not confined to football solely, and both basketball and cricket teams had a great run of success in their inter-school matches and a great improvement was shown by the hockey and swimming teams.

Extensions were made to the school in 1958 to cope with the increased number of enrolments in the lower classes.

THANKS

In conclusion, a school’s growth and achievements are not things that just happen but are the results of the combined efforts of many devoted people, and we cannot let this Jubilee pass without making reference to the many people who have had the schools’ interests at heart and have worked to see that the pupils received the best education possible under convenient conditions and with adequate equipment.

Chief among those responsible are the headmasters of the school – and Hastings West Raureka was well served by men of foresight and a keen appreciation of the requirements of an all-round and extensive education. Their planning and guiding of both staff and pupils, and their encouragement to all gave a purpose in our learning which laid the foundation for all our lives.

The teaching staff throughout the years has given attention to the practical instruction of the pupils and ensured that their charges met the requirements of their examinations. Their personal interest in each child was a source of inspiration and encouragement.

The chairmen, secretaries and members of committees gave generously of their time and ability to look after the financial affairs of operating a school that required more than minimum equipment to function efficiently. They have given themselves to the raising of funds to carry out ground improvements and the purchase of library material and supplies of equipment called for in a growing and advancing school. The school is now well equipped with modern teaching aids and the grounds and buildings well laid out and kept.

The parents of two and three generations have supported and helped in all efforts to further the work of the school and should not be forgotten at this time.

A sympathetic Education Board has given all staff, committee and parents every support and help, and has usually been most reasonable in considering the many requests and demands made on it.

To all these we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation and trust that at the completion of fifty years they are gratified with their old school and feel that it has all been worth while.

AN APPRECIATION

Miss Susan K. Wellwood
Assistant Mistress – 1914

You stood before us – your standard 1 and 2 class in 1914 – with your arms folded in the voluminous sleeves of your long green cardigan, tall and imperious and, to us, rather aloof and severe in appearance because in those days it “was not done” for a teacher to descend to the present modern happy relationship between teacher and pupil.

So much about you we did not know in those years – the struggle against ill health and hence the huddling into warmth of your cardigan for protection from the constant draughts of a schoolroom; the desire to give of your best to your pupils which we in our immature minds interpreted as unnecessary attention to detail; and above all your kindly interest in all who passed through your hands – and your delightful sense of humour.

All this and very much more I learned in later years when I was privileged to become your friend in your retirement, and a visitor in your last illness.

Sleep on in perfect rest, good friend, and in the happy reunions taking place over the jubilee period be sure that you will be remembered in affectionate regard.
