OUR COVER PICTURES

Front Cover. Two teenagers in controversial bikinis enjoy the sunshine at Tangoio. Lynne Rutter, a sixteen-year-old photographer’s assistant of Napier is interested mainly in swimming, hockey, and tennis. The doll was kindly loaned to our photographer by the Jack ‘n’ Jill of Taradale.

Back Cover. With stark fingers pointing to the sky, this fine study by Mr. M. N. Campbell of Hastings, brings home to us once again, the need for tree conservation in this country.

FLOWERS of SPRING

The sweet peas used in this unusual arrangement are named “Ink Splash”.

Miss Patricia Unwin arranging blooms in a section of her special exhibit of sweet peas. Miss Unwin, a teacher turned seed grower, cultivates four acres of these flowers, eight miles from Gisborne. Fresh seed is imported each year and 95 per cent of the harvest is then exported.

The prize for a decorative arrangement of not more than six blooms was won by Mrs. R. Simmonds.

WATER CAT

Cat sailing, according to the pundits on the beach looks like being the fastest wind driven craft in these parts. In the picture on the right we see the men who built her, Peter, Len (owner) and Claude Hartley.

A new addition to Napier is this seldom seen type of craft. known as a Cata-maran. Although the design is almost as ancient as time itself, it is only in the last few years that cat sailing has increased in popularity. For the technical types her length is 16 feet, beam 7 feet 6 inches, mast from deck to tip 23 feet, and spread of canvas carried is 198 square feet.

Poetry of Motion

Senior pupils of the Hastings Girls’ High School recently gave an exhibition of the modern conception of P.T. which today is based on graceful movement and poise as against the old idea of developing bulging muscles. In the pictures on this page we see rhythmic ball handling and rhythm to music.

Various movements demonstrated by the girls using, vaulting horse, parallel bars, skipping rope and mat.

Matchmaking of a different kind. Here we see some useful articles, made from the humble match. The construction of the small house took approximately 12,000 matches and there are 3492 in the tray. A useful hobby for spare time, but we do wonder where all the matches come from.

APPEAL FOR THE BLIND

In their recent appeal for the blind of Hawke’s Bay, the Napier, Hastings and Wairoa Jaycees set a target. but with the wonderful co-operation of the folk in the districts concerned the target was passed. We next spotted a game of softball in progress.

Young Allan McKnight, who is a new chum to Wairoa, having recently arrived from Wellington, is all set to join the “big ’uns”.

There are some who enjoy softball but obviously the happy group below preferred cooling off in the baths.

We then popped over to the Wairoa Bowling Club to see how the Dads were managing to while away the afternoon.

Especially for Little Girls

As the visit of Santa Claus is only a few days off, we would like you to meet Teena and Snub who would no doubt like to live with some lucky little girl. We first met Teena and Snub in Emerson Street on their way to the Parade. They stopped to have a look at the fish outside the War Memorial and Teena, finding it too hot took her hat and coat off. It was now time for a swim and Snub, who always enjoys a paddle thought this was a jolly good idea. After a tiring game of ball with Snub, Teena had a little rest and sunbathe. while Snub wandered off on his own. On the way from the beach, Teena and Snub met three little girls who invited her to have a swing on her Fairy Swing. Here we have to leave Teena and Snub as we had to go home, but who knows, perhaps we will meet them again soon. Teena, Snub and Teena‘s clothes kindly loaned by Jack ‘n’ Jill Dolls’ Hospital of Taradale.

School Helps Itself

Parents, staff and children of Queenswood School, Hastings, combined in the organisation of a very successful fair, held in the school grounds on November 18th. The school, which is for primary children, boys and girls, places emphasis on a balanced curriculum of both artistic and academic subjects. It is controlled by an Educational Trust Board whose members were responsible for the initial purchase of the school some ten years ago. The efforts of a strong parents’ committee resulted in the building of a hall and new swimming pool. The school is now raising funds to help repay this gesture by the parents.

The girls of the school displayed their talents with needle and thread by putting on a fashion parade for the visitors.

PRESENT and PAST

A view of Napier taken in the 20’s by the late H. Cottrell. At that time swimming and boating on the old Tutaekuri for those on Georges Drive was great fun. No thought had been given to traffic lights or the extension of Kennedy Road as far out as Greenmeadows.

More recent picture shows the expansion of Napier, and we wonder how many landmarks the reader can find.
