A TRIP ON A TRAWLER
Earlier this year Photo News photographer, Russell Spiller, very reluctantly hauled himself out of bed at 4 a.m. and set out on one of Napier’s fishing trawlers with Peter Franklin, skipper of the “Cellina”, and David Plunket for a day’s fishing.
At 5 a.m. the “Cellina” reached the fishing grounds at the end of the Pania Reef and our photographer managed to come up for air long enough to take this picture of Peter and David connecting the left-hand wire to the trawl-board. The net had been put over the side and 30 fathoms of wire let out. When all was ready and the trawler set on course, 100 fathoms were let out. The three hour trawl began and our unsteady photographer had time to regain his sea legs.
The trawl boards, one of which is being connected to the main wire by David Plunket, control the spread of the nets as they are being towed and on this trip new boards had been fitted.
Above left. The nets were hauled in after three hours but because the boards had been incorrectly adjusted, the nets spread too wide, with the result that a very poor catch was brought aboard.

There is always plenty to do to keep the crew busy while trawling. Here David and Peter are hosing down the previous catch with pumped sea water.
Then comes the job of cleaning and gutting the fish. No easy job on a pitching deck, but it’s no trouble to these two.
Fish of all types, shapes and sizes come up with the nets, but many are tossed back into the sea with the waste matter.
A flock of seagulls are the trawler’s constant companions. When the waste and unwanted fish are tossed over the side, their patience is rewarded in a big way.

And they say fishermen get their money easily! With the day’s catch cleaned and boxed, the “Cellina” heads for home at 5.30 p.m. after being at sea for 13 hours.
Our photographer was quite happy to step ashore and take this picture of the trawler tied up with her sister ships at the Scapa Flow wharf.
The fishing trip featured, is the first after the “Cellina” had been on the slip for a refit and general maintenance. The catch was very much smaller than usual because of the many adjustments the running gear needed.
For those interested in her vital statistics here they are: length 50 feet, beam 12 feet, and draw of 5½ feet. She was built specially for fishing the Hauraki Gulf, and is thought to have been built for Zane Grey in the 1930’s.

WRESTLING at Hastings
Meet Lou (Shoulders) Newman, 17st. 5lb., of San Jose, California, U.S.A. He doesn’t seem very pleased with the Hastings fans’ enthusiasm. Well, who would like to be on the receiving end of an “Octopus Clamp”, especially when Wairoa’s wrestler Keita Meretana was on the other end. The two sensations met in the big bout at the Municipal Theatre, Hastings.
Newman (on top) lets Meretana know that he knows a few tricks too.
Meretana, who has spent a lot of time perfecting Lofty Blomfield’s favourite hold, applies the famous octopus clamp.
And Newman, being a very wise wrestler, submits very quickly.

Dawn. Sunrise over the lake-mirrored mountains. A cock crow. Holdrio! . . . The morning silence is broken . . . and one of the world’s most loved musicals of all times bursts into life – a life of singing and dancing with the folk of the famous “White Horse Inn” . . . the White Horse Inn, with its love-smitten head waiter, its young and charming proprietress, and the holiday-makers – the underwear manufacturers, the professor, their daughters, a solicitor, and a honeymoon couple; and there’s a chorus of more than sixty voices.
There have been months and months of rehearsing. Here three of the principles, Patricia Reade, Terry Coyle and Ann Clifford, look over their lines.

Napier saw the last performance. Yes, they’ve had to disband – but the N.Z. Players’ production of Arthur Miller’s controversial play “A View From the Bridge” has been acclaimed by the critics as the Players’ “greatest triumph yet”. When the play “The World of Susy Wong” hit Broadway, it triggered off a new fashion craze – a fashion that’s fascinatingly feminine – and fascinatingly different. Howard Morrison Quartette COMES TO TOWN
America has her idols, England her’s, Paris her’s – and New Zealand? Yes, we’ve got ours too, and we’ve every reason to be proud of them. Howard Morrison, Noel King [Kingi], Jerry Merito and Wi Wharekura. (left to right) are real nice guys who have “sure got the public down under“ – and it’s not only the crazy mixed-up kids either! With their versatility and humour they’ve won fans everywhere.
It was a rousing welcome, but the driver certainly had difficulty getting away. Oh well! it’s not every day a “top-pops” recording group visit the Bay. So great was public demand, the artists staged an extra show and even that was “booked out”.

Yes, another old Napier landmark has had to make way for the new. Piece by piece the building has been carefully demolished – but for the old St. John’s Cathedral it is not the end. Our two bottom pictures show the church being fitted together on its new foundations, jigsaw style, at the Presbyterian site at Wycliffe Street, where it will serve a new community

Mr. Lou Smith, head grader at the Whakatu Freezing Works, is pictured here with the millionth carcase of mutton and lamb which passed through the works on May 26th. The millionth carcase at the “works” last year was attained on June 16th, nearly a month later than this year.

Wairoa little THEATRE
More than 60 players, musicians, and dancers, took part in Enid Harker’s and Billie McCorkindale’s production “The Babes In the Wood”. This is the third pantomime the Wairoa Little Theatre has staged at Napier.

HASTINGS JUNIOR NATURALISTS CLUB OUTING
Members of the Hastings Junior Naturalists’ Club take time off for a picnic lunch during an outing into the native bush at Balls Clearing, Puketitiri.
Before entering the bush, Mr. Reg Williams talks on the history of the reserve and gives instructions to an eager gathering of members. At the moment it looks as if Mr Williams is not receiving the full attention of all his listeners, some of whom seem to be more interested in having their picture taken.

Neverending scenes of beauty greet the naturalists as sunlight filters down through the tall trees to the magnificent undergrowth.
Tuis, bellbirds and wood pigeons were seen in the tops of these towering giants.
The boys find something of interest.
The girls in the party weren’t afraid to go fossicking on their own either.

A tasty morsel for some bird. The boys crowd around as Mr. Williams talks on a large caterpillar that has been found. Mr. Williams stated that this was the largest specimen he had ever seen.
Heather Stephenson, Judith Smith and Louella Martin, brought their own lunch along.
The native bush used to extend over this area. The timber has been milled and the land developed into a farming area.
