HASTINGS JAYCETTES

This year Hastings Jaycettes entertained their husbands with a hilarious portrayal of one day spent in a reducing salon, in preparation for the Jaycee International Congress in Sydney. Rythmic movement is attempted by the girls.

Taking part in the skit were Natalie Rockett, Jean Lester, Margaret Donovan, Betty Potts, Iona Startup, and Annette Greenfield.

TARADALE PLAYERS

The Taradale Community Players recently presented Emlyn Williams’ play “Someone Waiting”. Produced by Judy Evans, the play centred around a miscarriage of justice, and a vengeful action culminated in a highly dramatic climax. NEW ROSE GARDEN IN HASTINGS

The Mayoress of Hastings, Mrs. R. V. Giorgi, had the privilege, recently, of planting the first roses in the new garden at Frim1ey Park. She is shown planting the variety known as Greater Hastings on one of the specially prepared plots. Mr. Giorgi waits his turn beside his wife.

PLUNKET MOTHERS CLUB BIRTHDAY

The Napier Plunket Mothers’ Club recently held their 16th birthday party, and a very full evening’s entertainment was organised. At left we show Mrs. A. M. M. King, grandmother to 22 grandchildren, cutting the birthday cake, and at right, President Mrs. D. Kingston presents the Harris Challenge Cup to Audrey Edmonds, winner of the points prize.

Part of the evening’s entertainment was provided by the Marewa Townswomen’s Guild who presented the comedy “Heavens Above”.

HERE & THERE

The Japan Society of H.B. were recently treated to a demonstration of traditional Japanese dancing by Miss Setsuko Sudo, a professional dancing teacher from Tokyo, who is at present staying in Napier.

The highest award in Scouting, the Queens Scout Certificate, was presented to two members of the Napier South Scout Troop at a ceremony recently. Shown with their awards, presented by the Mayor of Napier, Peter Tait, are Michael J. Howell and Barry Millynn.

KAHURANAKI MEETING HOUSE JUBILEE

Maoris from all directions of the country descended on Te Hauke recently for the 50th Jubilee of the founding of the Kahuranaki Meeting House. One of the colourful personalities present was Sir Ereura [Eruera] Terikatane [Titikatene] (left) pictured as he addressed the large gathering from the path crosssing [crossing] the famous meeting house.

INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION NAPIER

Though somewhat marred by cold, wet weather, the Napier Industrial Exhibition, sponsored by the Napier Development Association, held in the new Dalgety and N.Z. Loan Limited woolstore, Ahuriri, attracted over 55,000 people to view the products of over 150 exhibitors. Shown here is the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. J. R. Sheer amazement and incredulity as registered on the face of this young boy, was also on the faces of some 5,000 people, both young and old, who stopped to watch water apparently pouring out of a tap suspended in mid-air.

A pupil of Colenso High School, Napier, Sandra Bisson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Bisson, Poraiti, was recently granted a scholarship by the Rotary Club of Greenwood, South Carolina, U.S.A., to spend a year at Lander College. Sandra will leave for the U.S.A. in September.

ROVING CAMERA

Early morning flames on an icy morning left one classroom gutted and the staff room and upper storey of the Hastings Central School badly charred recently. Children, hopeful that perhaps a holiday would eventuate, had their hopes dashed when it was announced school would resume on Monday. The Hastings Fire Chief Mr. L. Harlen received broken ribs during the blaze and required admission to hospital.

Who came out of this . . . if any? Well, believe it or not, the young Hastings driver, Mr. Frogley, received minor hand abrasions when he wrote off his car after striking a bridge at Havelock North recently. How lucky can you be?

TOP HAT 200 CLUB CABARET

Napier’s Top Hat Ballroom was the venue for the recent “Top Hat 200 Club” Cabaret. Generally regarded as one of the Events of the Season, the excellent music and cuisine are now accepted as an integral part of Top Hat hospitality. Among the 400 guests were Mr. and Mrs. A. Barnett, John White and Margaret Neale and Mrs. and Mr. J. Shepherd of Napier.

Just another example of the Top Hat thoughtfulness, was the presentation of a spray to every lady as she entered. Shown receiving her spray is Mrs. A. Alexander of Puketapu.

An enthusiastic reception was accorded 17-year-old Yvonne Thomas, who gave a polished display with pois.

Mrs. J. Dymond of Westshore recently celebrated her 75th birthday. UNUSUAL PLAY BY HASTINGS BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

The cast of the Hastings Boys’ High School play, “Morning Departure”, a sea drama based on the Kenneth Woolard story of men trapped in a sub-marine at the bottom of the sea while on exercises during the 2nd World War. Gripping suspense is maintained, both on the sunken vessel and also on shore as efforts are made to bring about a rescue.

SOCCER

Before a record crowd of approximately 5,000 spectators, many of whom were rugby enthusiasts, the long awaited clash between Blackpool and Sheffield United took place under lights at McLean Park, Napier. Played at an amazingly fast pace, spectators were treated to a skilful game of soccer by two evenly matched teams. Here we show England goalkeeper A. Waiters (Blackpool) plucking a high ball out of the air.

An excellent job of refereeing was carried out by Napier’s Ernie Sakers.

Sheffield United’s goalkeeper A. Hodgkinson, would be a welcome addition to many rugby clubs with his dropkicks.

CAGED BIRD SHOW, HASTINGS

The Hastings Poultry, Pigeon and Cage Bird Society’s recent show attracted entries from many parts of the country. Here can be seen but a few of the entries in the cage bird section.

With the title of Best Game Bird in the show, this rooster certainly had something to crow about.

UTIERA – TURNER. An unusual wedding service was held at Tangoio recently when Mr. and Mrs. P. Utiera were married outside by Rev. J. Reti. The bride was Glynis Turner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Turner, Napier, and the groom is the son. of Mr. and Mrs. T. Taewa, Napier.
