Pastor and Mrs. Laurence Howell, Seventh-Day Adventist Missionaries from New Guinea, and ex Napierites, who recently spent some time in Napier during their furlough. They have completed 34 years missionary service in New Guinea, where Pastor Howell is Director of the Seventh-Day Adventish [Adventist] Milne Bay Mission Headquarters.

Pastor B. C. Grossar of Auckland, Secretary of the Medical Department of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church for the North Island, recently conducted Napier’s first “Five Day Plan to Stop Smoking”, during which 47 of the 50 smokers who wished to quit the habit were successful.

TARAWERA HOTEL FIRE

One of the familiar landmarks on the Napier-Taupo highway, the Tarawera Hotel was recently destroyed in a fierce early morning blaze and the patrons had a narrow escape from the blazing wooden building. The licensee, Mr. A. L. Matthews, surveys the wreckage in the morning after the blaze, which reduced the structure to a heap of twisted iron.

SUB ASS. BASKETBALL

Sub-Association basketball day was held under blustery conditions on the Marine Parade courts recently but there was a happy spirit found amidst the players, regardless of the inclement conditions. Shown at top are members of the major and minor teams following the presentation of their badges by the Mayoress of Napier, Mrs. P. Tait. Eighteen teams took part in the games played throughout the day, from the Hastings Association, four from Napier, three from Central Hawke’s Bay, three visiting teams from Wairoa and two from Poverty Bay.

ROVING CAMERA

Heather McInnes and Richard Hunt are shown being piped on board their plane at Hawke’s Bay Airport by Pipe-Major Colin Campbell, on the first leg of a three months world tour, recently. They are members of the New Zealand pony team and will compete at an international pony club rally in New York while in the United States.

A large shipment of livestock recently left the Port of Napier on the ship “Dona Clausen” for Chile, and here we see sheep being loaded. The animals are to be used to improve the standard of Chilean livestock.

ODD SHOTS

The Municipal Baths, Napier, is well on the way to receiving its well deserved facelift, as can be seen from this picture showing the destruction of the seaward wall.

Willing hands work on the preparation of the massive blossom arches which span Heretaunga Street, Hastings, and give tangible evidence that yet another year has spun around and festival time is crowding in upon us. Each year dozens of volunteers work on making and arranging the artificial blossom arches.

TOMOANA PLAYERS

Napier and Hastings theatre-goers attended well this year’s production of the Tomoana Players, “The Bargain”, produced by Mick Mills (inset). It is a comedy concerning a lawyer scheming to procure a valuable miniature painting cheap. NEW ASSEMBLY HALL OPENED

NEW WHARF PROGRESS

While pile driving continues, other phases of the work develop – such as shown above as workmen prepare a large concrete hopper which will be used in pouring the decking.

Inching its way out over the water at Napier port is the new wharf which is being built north of the existing ones. Twin pile drivers are starting to eat their way into the vast stock of concrete piles stored alongside.

Just too beautiful to be eaten could be the only way to describe the wind-up competition of the 10-week cake decorating class at the Hastings night school recently. Amongst some of the artistic working in icing were these depicting Humpty Dumpty (top), a quaint English style cottage (lower left) and someone with an interest in tennis.

THOMSON – BONICA. Mrs. H. Temaro, Taita, and Mr Joe Bonica, Gisborne, have pleasure in announcing the engagement of their daughter, Dianne Rose, to Alexander Stuart, son of Mrs. Burke, Napier, and Mr. Stuart Thomson, Hamilton.

Mrs. M. Tringham, uniform packer at Napier Hospital Laundry since 1936, recently retired at the age of 70 years. On behalf of the laundry and hospital staff she was presented with flowers, a standard lamp, electric blanket, travelling rug and afternoon tea cloth.

Anne Cameron, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cameron, Otane, and a pupil of Sacred Heart College, was recently awarded an American Field Scholarship to study for one year in U.S.A., attending College in Los Angeles.

H.B. – P.B. HARRIER CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Annual H.B.-P.B. Harrier Championships were held this year on the Sugarloaf, Taradale, course. Despite atrocious conditions, an amazingly large number of harriers participated in the meet. From top to bottom, we show the fields getting under way in the Colt “A”, the junior, and senior events.
