Amid the subdued wailing of the Napier Central Fire Station siren, officers and men of the brigade marched in slow time across Civic Square as a mark of respect for fellow retired brigadesman, the late Mr. James Anthony Drieberg, recently. The pictures show the parade of brigadesmen,

Skimming in close to a row of tall poplars, a commercial helicopter owned by Aerial Applicators Ltd., Wanganui, sprayed bean crops in Hawke’s Bay recently. This picture was taken at Haumoana where the helicopter covered an area of nine acres in twelve minutes.

MEEANEE RODEO

There were thrills and spills galore during the annual Meeanee Rodeo recently. Buck jumpers and cowboys from many parts of the Dominion and Australia battled it out for the top prizes.

This bronc was staging a sit-down strike. No cowboy’s going to get on me, seems to be the attitude of this wild one who flipped over on his back in the box while harnessing up.

ROYAL SHOW

Hawke’s Bay’s sixth and New Zealand’s 32nd Royal Show, held this year at Tomoana Show Grounds, was plagued by unsettled weather, particularly on People’s Day, but this did not detract greatly from the success of the show as a whole. New interest  was provided with fashion shows and Army displays.

UNUSUAL WOOL SHED

After many years of research, trial and error, Mr. Montgomery, Sheep and Wool Instructor for the Department of Agriculture in Hastings, has been able to design a Wool Shed that should prove most efficient and economical for both the grower and the shearer. Situated on the site of the old 25-stand shed of the original Waipunga Estate of Eskdale, the new shed is a 4-stand one, and the new owners Messrs. D. R. and B. Yule are to be congratulated on their confidence in its designer.

Minister opens new woolshed at Eskdale

Messrs. R. Yule and Son’s new woolshed at ESKDALE was officially opened by the Minister for Agriculture, Mr. B. Tallboys. This woolshed, which incorporates many new features, was designed by Mr. R. G. Montgomery of the Department of Agriculture. All materials, including laminated timber portals and laminated beams, were supplied by Robert Holt & Sons Ltd.  Some of the new features are shown below, others include an advanced type lift-and-swing gate, reflected light from the ceiling by means of double sided aluminium foil (no netting) and wooden portal construction for strength and easy erection.

Laminated timber beams give a good head clearance under the woolshed without the need for heavy structural support timbers.

Building costs are reduced by dispensing with standard type windows. Transparent corrugated sheets (illustrated right) incorporated in walls allow efficient natural internal light.

Once again Napier was privileged to witness an exhibition of skating of a standard very seldom seen in this country when a team of visiting American skaters and one Canadian gave an excellent performance at the Centennial Hall recently.

Once again the boaties take to the water in force – as another sailing season opens which, with the Moffatt and Tauranga Cups being raced in the bay this year, should prove an interesting and exciting season.

A couple of young guys, Linda and Keith Sharrock. Linda was the youngest member of the Parade.

After a rather damp start the Guy Fawkes celebrations in Napier got under way and warmed up as the evening progressed.

The usual parade of Guys moved off from Clive Square, led most appropriately by a fire engine, to the Sound Shell where judging was carried out by Mr. Peter Tait assisted by the crowd, the winners being selected by popular vote.

Once again it is Frivs-time,  and once again this popular company is earning new laurels for itself with its present show “Corn off the Cob”. This year the company has a new “Mr. Interlocutor” in the person of Tom Tait, Jock Stevenson having retired from the limelight but still a very active member.

TARADALE SCHOOL GALA

Precision pattern marching by members of the senior classes opened this year’s Gala of the Taradale School, the children putting on a very good performance which was much appreciated.

Miss Barbara Allen, who gained 1st place in the Junior group.

A fashion parade with a difference.  Organised recently by the Napier store of McGruers was a teenage fashion parade in which all the young models – age 13/14 juniors and 15/16 seniors – made their own model dresses.  The young ladies were parading in competition with each other before two judges and were judged on deportment, workmanship and finish, style, personality, and in choice of suitable accessories.

The standard was so high in the Junior Group that three girls tied for second place. They are: Mary Taylor, Judith Tarplett and Glennys Walch.

NAPIER MODEL BOAT CLUB

Members prepare to launch their models.

After a lengthy period of recess the Napier Model Boat Club is once again an active body and very much alive. Its new base is now just off Meannee [Meeanee] Quay, Westshore, where members have built a small landing stage and lock gates to enable them to dam their lagoon when the tide is out. The club celebrated its return to activity with members from clubs as far away as Auckland and Wellington.

The room was so full, these older pupils of the school assembled on the adjoining fence to peep in through the windows.

To mark the end of the first session of the Hastings Youth Club, members decided to present cheques to a number of worthy causes. Above we see Mr. Giorgi with representatives for the Little Sisters of the Poor, Salvation Army, Outward Bound, Foundation for the Blind, and Pukehau Home.

ANIMAL AIR LIFT

Something not seen [in] Hawke’s Bay very often: cattle arriving by air. This caused quite a lot of interest as can be seen by the number of interested spectators around the plane.

Sheep also get the V.I.P. treatment and travel by air these days. Picture shows the inside of an N.A.C. freighter.

Something we have never seen before in the Bay: a branch of thorn fixed along the top of a sheep’s cover to prevent wool being damaged by others lying against it.

PICTURES FROM THE PAST

Our picture from the past this month shows Emerson Street during the early part of the century. We have tried to put a date on the picture, but found nobody could agree so we have left it open. Note how narrow the street is, and also on close examination a horse drawn vehicle can be seen turning into a very narrow lane, which would now be Dalton Street. Below is Emerson Street today which, with growing traffic demands, is still too narrow.

Another picture from the past, the old Municipal Theatre prior to the 1931 earthquake, and the present theatre. The tree at the side of the building appears to be the same as is there today and the present car park on close examination is laid in lawn, such is progress.

RICHMOND SCHOOL’S FIRST GALA

The Richmond School, Maraenui, held its first Gala recently, which was very successful, some £180 being raised. The Gala was officially opened by Mr. Tait, the Mayor, and children of the school presented items.

SERMON ON THE PEAK

The annual Dawn Service held each year on World Communion Sunday at Te Mata Peak was well attended this year by young people of many denominations. Some 250 Bible Class students arrived for the service in sixty cars.

PATHFINDERS

CALLISTHENIC’S

Callisthenics – a form of rhythmic gymnastics. Throughout the winter the Napier Swimming Club has been concentrating on getting their young swimmers ready for the coming season by running classes designed to keep the muscles and bodies of these young people supple so that when they take to the water again all will be well.

The EISTEDDFOD of the Napier and District Combined Church Choirs will be held this year in the Taradale Town Hall on Thursday, December 6th. Each choir will sing two carols or other Christmas music.
