H.B. v INVITATION FIFTEEN

Before a crowd estimated at 7,000, and played in brilliant sunshine, the final game of rugby for 1965, in which the NZ Invitation XV beat Hawke’s Bay by 25 points to 16, was played at McLean Park, Napier. Bright, open football was the order of the day, and the crowd loved every minute of it. Here, All Black Ron Rangi is about to be tackled by H.B. back Johnny Nuku.

We hope that Briscoe’s chest wasn’t crushing the elbow of H.B. captain Kel. Tremain, whilst “De Thimble” looked for the ball.

A fine line jump by Wellington and NZ. prop, Ken Gray, with his H.B. opposite number Rod Abel, who was playing his last game, was only a few inches away.

Page 17

The Bay backline swings into action.

At this stage of the game, there was some confusion as to who was playing for the Invitation XV.

Shown dotting the ball down under the posts is H.B. back Blair Furlong, who also made his last appearance for this province.

Swamped by small boys, Ken Gray signs autograph books.
