Holly Hospice Trail 2002

Hospice Holly Trail

Welcome to the Hospice Holly Trail, 2002 Thursday to Saturday 7,8,9 November

This year’s Hospice Holly Trail will take you from Havelock North into the glorious countryside of the Tuki Tuki Valley and out to the spectacular coast of Te Awanga. Eleven venues include historic country homesteads, farm houses, contemporary homes, a state-of the-art country winery and a garden where there will be refreshments and stalls selling a variety of quality products with a Christmas theme.

You do not have to visit in the order set out, but each venue may be visited only once except Longacre Country Garden which may be visited as often as you like as long as you are wearing your ticket. In order to appreciate the scenery along the way we advise allowing plenty of travel time for this Holly Trail. The route will be well sign-posted. Stalls, pre-ordered lunches and other refreshments will be at Longacre only. In the event of bad weather all venues will have a sign-posted place for wet weather clothing to be left before entering. (We advise low-heeled shoes for this Holly Trail)

Please adhere to these simple rules along the way:
Take off your shoes at each venue and use the shoe bag provided;
Wear your entrance tickets so that they may be marked at each venue;
Respect owners’ property and privacy
Toilet facilities are provided at marked venues, please do not ask at other venues.
No smoking, no cameras, and no children.

1.    Muritai, 68 Duart Road
Designers – Sandra O’Sullivan & HB Area Floral Art
Sponsor:   Peter Dunkerley Amcal Pharmacy Ltd.
This is an historic home originally built in the 1890s for a pioneering Hawke’s Bay family. It has recently been converted into luxury short stay accommodation which sleeps 10. The simple colonial architecture of its era has been maintained and furnishings throughout enhance this atmosphere.
Park on the road.

2.   Undercliffe Pool house, 41 Waimarama Road
Designer – Avison’s Flowers
Sponsor:   Farmlands Trading Society.
Approach the pool house through the lovely garden walkway under rose covered archways. The theme here is a poolside Christmas lunch looking across to the 1920s house designed by architect Eric Philips. Allow enough time here to wander in the garden.
Cars park in the paddock off the road as directed. Buses park on the road.

3.   Craggy Range Winery (the restaurant) 253 Waimarama Road
Designer – Debbie Nott Flowers
Sponsor:   Craggy Range Winery Ltd.
This is probably the latest and most comprehensive Hawke’s Bay winery to open. It is sited on the Tuki Tuki flats with breathtaking views across the river in one direction and up to Te Mata Peak in the other. You may have a break in the Trail here to enjoy the food and wine as well as the decorations and the views (bookings advised)
Parking as directed.

4.   Matangi, 570 Matangi Road
Design group – HB Area Floral Art
Sponsors:   Cuccini Café/Deli and the Olive Tree Café.
This farmhouse of the 1950’s generates a feeling of warmth and informality, a perfect setting for a New Zealand family Christmas with its lovely garden and natural indoor outdoor flow. The home now belongs to the 2nd generation of its original owners.
Park as directed.

Longacre Country Garden, Tuki Tuki Road
Time for a break – no decorations here.
Sponsor:   Stewart Financial group.
This is where you collect and enjoy your ordered pre-paid lunch or stop and have a cup of tea or coffee. Here you also have the opportunity to buy beautiful items related to our Christmas theme. HHT Ticket holders may visit this venue as often as they like. Take time to enjoy this well-known Hawke’s Bay garden, maybe walk around the lake which is a feature of the garden. It takes about 10 minutes.
Park in the paddock off the drive as directed.

5.   Tuki Tuki Homestead, 877 Tuki Tuki Road
Designers – Sue Fagan & HB Area Floral Art
Sponsors:   Cadeaux and Redcurrent.
Here is a family home with an interesting history. The original 19th century house was moved across the Tuki Tuki River in its early years, then eight years ago it was razed to the ground by fire. Today the large homestead designed by Robert Singleton has very much the same outside appearance as the old home although the design is really quite different. Check out the story when you get there.
Parking in paddock as directed.

6.   Crossfields, 375 Tuki Tuki Road
Designer – Flowers by Tanya
Sponsor:   Tourist Kelt Motors Ltd.
It is hard to believe this country house by architect Steve McGavock is only four years old. The use of recycled timber beams, a recycled door from Smith and Caughey department store, and the high studs create a dramatic effect of space and height and give a sense of permanence and solidarity.
Parking for disabled and elderly people only, others please leave cars where directed and take courtesy bus or walk.

7.   Summerlee Homestead, 404 Clifton Road, Te Awanga
Designer – Debbie Nott Flowers
Sponsor:   Panache Hair Design.
This large homestead was built in the 1920s in European country style. Today it is a luxury accommodation ‘retreat’ which sleeps up to twelve people. The interior has been fully refurbished with a French country-house flavour. All the modern facilities holidaymakers may require are provided, while the outside of the house maintains its authentic farmhouse appearance. There are lovely views out to sea, and a tranquil country garden setting.
Park off drive as directed.

8.   Clifton Homestead, 466 Clifton Road, Te Awanga
Designer – Diana Hough
Sponsors:   Elaine’s of Hastings and Elaines of Napier.
Clifton is a large two-storey early Hawke’s Bay farmhouse, a family home still in the ownership of descendants of the original family. Verandahs surround the house with huge sash windows and french doors opening on to them from most rooms. Stag’s heads greet you as you enter, providing a wonderful setting for the Christmas theme which continues along the hall and into the dining room.
Park off the drive as directed.
If you feel like a break at this point, Clifton Bay (Licensed) Café is just down the road.

This tour is undertaken at your own risk, home owners and committee members are not responsible for any accidents which may occur in the process of the Hospice Holly Trail

9.   148 Clifton Road Te Awanga
Designer – Sophie Henderson
Sponsor:   Gilmour’s Pharmacy 2002 Ltd.
Clever use of space and colour give the illusion of extra space in this attractive Mediterranean style coastal home. The house blends into it’s natural landscape which has been enhanced by the use of succulent and agave plantings among more traditional trees, shrubs and flowering plants.
Park as directed.

10.   20 Parkhill Road, Haumoana
Designers – Jeanette Butler & HB Area Floral Art
Sponsor:   Pratley Healthcare Ltd.
The most contemporary house of this year’s Holly Trail was designed and built by the owners. The exterior is mainly corrugated iron and glass. The interior is spacious, light and uncluttered using just a few splashes of strong colour and modern design pieces to create drama. The large living area includes dining and kitchen; it also flows easily into the outside living space.
Park as directed.

All venues open from 10am to 5pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Remember you don’t have to start at house number 1 !!!
