HOOKINGS, Gordon Alick
Former University Associate Professor.
Born Napier 28 October 1920. Married 1960 Margaret Eileen Louise Dodd; three children – Clare Vivien, Alistair Geoffrey, Elizabeth Louise.
Educated Auckland Grammar School; Auckland University College; Cambridge University.
Formerly optical munitions designer, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research 1942-43, aerodynamicist, British Air Ministry 1944-45, Associate Professor of Mathematics 1948-85, of Applied Mathematics 1967, Auckland University, acting Head of Department 1966, 1967-72.
Secretary NZ Mathematical Olympiads Canberra 1988, West Germany 1989, Sweden 1991.
Awarded Sir Henry Wigram Medal, Royal Aeronautical Society (NZ Division) 1965, MBE 1989 for services to education and gliding.
Member NZ gliding team at world championships 1978, 1981, 1983, 1989, 1991, steward 1974, 1987, manager NZ team 1972, NZ champion Standard Class 1969, honorary secretary NZ Gliding Association 1949-54, 1958-62.
Leisure activities include skiing, gliding.
