Born Napier, 23 November 1942, daughter of Charles Gardner and Kathleen Mary (née Begley); married Terence Henry Hurford, son of Harry and Margaret Hurford, 1965; two sons, four daughters.
Education: Putorino Primary School, Hawkes Bay; Sacred Heart Girls College, Napier; Ardmore Teachers College, Trained Teacher’s Certificate, 1962
Primary School Teacher: Hawkes Bay (North Clyde, Hastings, Napier, Waiwhare), 1962 – 1966, Canterbury (with time out to have family), 1967 – 1989; Selwyn Riding Member, Malvern County Council, 1986 – 1989; Mayor, Selwyn District Council, 1989 –
Served on wide range of community organisations, Hororata district: Plunket, Playcentre (President), Library, Hororata Parent Teachers Association (Secretary), Parish Council, Darfield High School Parent Teachers Association, Board of Governors, Board of Trustees (Deputy Chairman, 1989 -), Hororata Red Cross (President, 1989 – 1990), Foundation Member, Malvern Childcare Centre, 1989
