JOHNSTONE, James (Dick)
Psychotherapist, Counsellor, Theatre Director.
Born Dannevirke 27 October 1939.
Educated Napier High School; Auckland Grammar School; Auckland University 1959-63, 1979-84 – Master oi Arts 1982, Dip Community Studies 1983; Birmingham University 1970-71 – Diploma in Theatre Arts Administration 1971; Central Institute of Technology/ALAC 1984-85 – Certificate Addiction Cn 1985. MCAP (Psychotherapy).
Manager of addiction services, Community Health, Hawke’s Bay Area Health Board, formerly other counselling positions, contract theatre and opera director, director Downstage Theatre.
Founder and director Burnett Clinic, Auckland Hospital, NZ’s first clinic for HIV/AIDS.
Directed more than 200 productions of plays, musicals, operas and ballets in NZ, Australia, UK, Austria, USA, USSR.
Awarded OBE for services to NZ theatre.
Address 24 Hardinge Road, Ahuriri, Napier.
