Born: Christchurch, 20 December 1884, son of HT Jones; married 1915 Ada E, daughter of J Wadsworth; 1 son, 2 daughters
Education: public schools, Taranaki & Napier
1899-05 served apprenticeship under RJ Mason (trainer to GG Stead); retained by Honorable JD Ormond as 1st horseman 1906-11; rode successfully NZ, Australia, England 1900-13, won most of big races NZ since starting as trainer 1913, and many Australian; fortunate having had horses Limerick, Ballymena, Amythes, Reputation, Royal Chief, Nightly, etc to train; won as trainer over £200,000 in stakes, trained over 500 winners
Recreation: golf, billiards, shooting
