Ken was bought up on the family farm at Crownthorpe and educated at Crownthorpe school and Nelson College where he boarded for three years from 1948. He enjoyed horse riding and hunting, played rugby until suffering a knee injury, and also played badminton and tennis. He learnt the piano from his mother and played the viola in the school orchestra. In 1954 he went to Australia for six months and worked on the Snowy River Scheme and on a cattle station. He was a member of the local Young Farmers’ Club and Federated Farmers, serving as chairman of both organisations. He took over the family farm in 1959 and developed it further by fencing and ploughing and a few years later bought another 198 acres beside the Ngaruroro River, continuing fencing and cultivation. He also put in an irrigation plant and some kiwifruit.

Judy grew up in rural Taradale where he [her] father leased Sugar Loaf Farm and she was educated at Taradale Primary School and Napier Girls’ High School. The family moved to Hastings when she was 13. She worked at
