Born Christchurch, 30 December 1944, son of Thomas Mitchell Kilty and Nancy Zoe (née Rossiter); married Helen Mary Hay, daughter of Alexander and Mary Hay, 1970; two sons one daughter.
Education: Papanui Primary School; Shirley Boys High School; Canterbury University, MA 1967; Christchurch Teachers College, Diploma Teaching 1968, Massey University, DipEd (Admin) 1984, Med (Admin) 1988; Woolf Fisher Fellow to Asia 1981; McKenzie Foundation for Education res grant 1983.
