PRODUCER
Laurie Swindell

We are delighted to have Laurie as our producer again this year and consider ourselves fortunate indeed to have a person of her experience and enthusiasm. She has studied all aspects of theatre and has been continuously and actively concerned in acting, backstage work, producing and adjudicating. She was a British Drama League adjudicator for some 15 years and has more recently been admitted by examination to the Guild of Adjudicators London. She has also produced and tutored under the New Zealand Drama Council Schemes. Laurie cannot imagine life without the theatre which she says is the most stimulating, absorbing, satisfying interest one can have. She threatens that when she is 90, she will play one of Shakespeare’s witches and perhaps at the same time, produce a mod version of “Guys and Dolls”. Let us hope that before that pleasing prospect swings into view, she will produce many many more shows, including a New Zealand musical.
She has a husband, three children and two grandchildren and hundreds of adopted theatre children.

DORIS JENSEN who plays “Anna”

Doris has appeared in many musicals in Hawke’s Bay including the Napier Operatic Society’s production of “Sound of Music” and “Annie Get Your Gun” also various roles in many of the Napier Frivs’ Pantomimes. She has also sung in choirs and music recitals. Doris has a very talented young son David who is also in the show.

GOOCH PARAHI who plays “The King”

Gooch is a man of quite unique versatility as he has played every type of role from farce right through to Grand Opera. Apart from taking part in many of our previous productions his outstanding talent has won him recognition throughout the country and overseas. Gooch has toured New Zealand and Australia as “Crown” in the Opera Company “Porgy and Bess” and also played the role of “The Bonz” in “Madame Butterfly”. In 1963 he toured America with the Te Arohanui Concert Party and again in 1965.

The Story of Anna and King Mongkut

“The King and I” is unique in that it is adapted from a true-life story, “Anna and the King of Siam”, a biography based on actual diaries. Margaret Landon, author of “Anna and the King of Siam”, first became fascinated by Anna Leonowens when the writer was living in Siam, some twenty-five years ago. A friend lent her Mrs Leonowen’s first book, “The English Governess at the Siamese Court.” That led her into the second book by the governess, “The Romance of the Harem.” Utterly absorbed by the picture the volumes offered of the inner life of an Oriental court, and of the brave Englishwoman who went to that court to teach English (and democracy) to the Siamese King’s sixty-seven children, Mrs Landon let the project simmer in the back of her mind for a few years. Then, in 1939, a friend who had himself spent some time in Siam, wondered aloud if Mrs Landon had “ever heard of his Aunt Annie”. “Aunt Annie”, of course, turned out to be Anna Leonowens.
Mrs Landon picked up a great deal of important family background through this happy coincidence, as she was put in touch with one of Mrs Leonowens’ grandchildren. Two subsequent years of research finally culminated in “Anna and the King of Siam.”

The story was a gripping and human one, told against the brilliant background of the Siamese court. In the 1860’s, Siam was feeling the twin impact of Western imperialism and Western knowledge. Its King, Mongkut, was a contradictory combination of charm and cruelty, of feudal instincts and a desire for progress. Into his barbaric court came Anna Leonowens, an Englishwoman with a mind of her own. Before she left Siam, Mrs Leonowens had the King’s multitudinous children speaking excellent English, and she also had the Siamese Government well on its way to many liberal reforms that until then hadn’t been dreamed of. That was the same period, of course, when Abraham Lincoln was wrestling with slavery in his country. Before Mrs Leonowens was done with him, Mongkut had an excellent working knowledge of Mr Lincoln’s ways, and had been induced to apply many of the President’s principles to Siam itself.

MUSICAL DIRECTOR
Harry Cooper

We are very proud to have Harry as our Musical Director this year. It took quite a little time to coax him out of retirement but much to our delight he agreed and we are confident that his vast knowledge of music will add a special lustre to our production. He studied on the Continent, at the Royal Academy London, the N.S.W. Conservatorium and travelled the world as a professional violinist. He is a former leader and deputy conductor of Hastings Orchestral Society and former conductor of the Orphans Club orchestra. He was musical director and producer for ten years of the Wairoa Amateur Theatrical Society.

CHORAL DIRECTOR
Mary Bell

Our productions have always been strong in chorus work thanks to the many hours of patient coaching Mary Bell has given to our company. She is something very special to all of us, our friend as well as our chorus mistress and pianist with the orchestra. Countless singers and musicians have over the year been carefully trained by Mary and we in Hawke’s Bay are lucky indeed to have a person of her outstanding ability.

Lovell Smiths

CHOREOGRAPHER & BALLET MISTRESS
Judith Cater

Judy needs no introduction to Hawke’s Boy audiences as, for several years she has delighted us all with her brilliant performances on stage. This year she has added yet another link to her remarkable chain of successes, that of Choreographer and Ballet Mistress. The dance sequences in this production require careful artistic handling and Judy has created for us and you our partons[patrons] ballets worthy of the highest praise. Another of her successes is a husband and three little children.

PATRICIA SHERRATT as “Tuptim”
Particia[Patricia] appeared in Hutt Repertorys “Cinderella” last year and also high school plays and pantomimes. This role shows us her fine acting and singing ability.

JAMES PAXIE who plays “Lun Tha”
Jim is known to all of us through Station 2ZC where he works as announcer and popular disc-jockey, but apart from his personality and talent on radio he is a very accomplished actor and singer on stage. He has played various roles in several musicals including “Rio Rita” here in Hastings and “Oklahoma” for the Rotorua Operatic Society. James took over the role of Lun Tha only 3 weeks before the show opened.

MARY REID as “Lady Thiang”

Mary has appeared in three of the company’s previous shows including the first production of “Showboat”. In1962 she toured New Zealand in “All Faces West” with Jon Andrews and Igor Gorin and the National Orchestra. In 1963 she went to America as soloist with the Te Arohanui Concert Party and also New Zealand Opera Company’s “Porgy and Bess” understudying the role of “Clara”. Mary has two children taking part in the show also.

JUNE FARMER as “Lady Thiang”

June Farmer (nee Berry) sang in two of the company’s early revues then moved to the South Island. She reached the semi-finals of the Mobil Song Quest and has appeared in productions for Mosgiel Repertory and Dunedin Repertory and was the only contralto chosen for the Dunedin chorus of the New Zealand Opera Company’s “La Boheme”. Two of June’s daughters Sally and Vicki seem to be following in their mother’s footsteps as they are also in this production.
